The “New World Order”: From Unilateralism to Cosmopolitanism. CES Germany & Europe Working Papers, no. 04.1, 2004
On January 26, 2004, the topic of the CES-Berlin Dialogues was “The ‘New World Order’: From Unilateralism to Cosmopolitanism.” It was the second in a series of four meetings organized in Berlin under the heading “Redefining Justice.” The session was intended to examine successful and failed arenas of cooperation between the US and Europe; political misunderstandings and conscious manipulation; and models for future transatlantic relations. The presenters were Jeffrey Herf, Professor of History, University of Maryland, and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Neyer, Professor of International Political Economy, Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, and Heisenberg Fellow of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the Freie Universität Berlin. Jeffrey Herf was asked to speak on the basic tenets of U.S. foreign policy in the administration of President George W. Bush, and Jürgen Neyer focused on the European view of international relations and conduct in the period since the invasion of Iraq
Viewpoints. 75 Sides to Freie Universität Berlin
The book containing 75 illustrations and short texts is a journey through the history and world of Freie Universität Berlin. It was created in April 2023 to mark the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the university’s founding. With a hint of irony and pointed fragmentary playfulness, the images depict a connected, international university deeply committed to its core values: freedom, justice, truth. The university has become an important part of Berlin as a city and research hub. Various aspects of the past and present of the university were artistically interpreted by Yves Haltner, a Swiss illustrator and graphic designer who lives and works in Berlin
Die Zähmung der Zeit - Ein Goldener Nagel für das Anthropozän
(Science Graphic Novel, no abstract available)
The content of this science graphic novel is largely based on University course lectures and research on Earth history, reef evolution, and the Anthropocene concept by Reinhold Leinfelder at Freie Universität Berlin, as well as on his research within the Anthropocene Working Group. It particulary deals with the importance of a better understanding of time, connecting the interaction of 'Deep Time' (Earth history) with the present 'Great Acceleration' and the 'Long Now', defining the future of the Earth system. This is exemplified along the work of the International Anthropocene Working Group (established by the International Commission on Stratigraphy

Preferred vs. Actual Working Hours - A Ten Years Paneleconometric Analysis for Professions, Entrepreneurs and Employees in Germany
Labour market dynamics according the individual working hour tension (preferred working
hours minus actual working hours) of active people with focus on the self-employed, as
professions and entrepreneurs, and employees are investigated in our study. The individual
longitudinal analysis based on panel data allows us to follow the individual process of
working time preferences and actual outcomes in its individual convergence/divergence
balancing process in the course of time. Our microanalytic and paneleconometric results (with
pooled, one and two factor fixed and random effects models) quantify the working hour
tension developments and its determinants in a decade from the mid 80s to the mid 90s.
Microdata base is the German Socio-Economic Panel with ten waves from 1985 to 1994.
Finally, we discuss impacts of our results for labour market strategies and a targeted
economic and social policy
a collaboration among refugee newcomers, migrants, activists and anthropologists in Berlin
In 2015, Germany entered what would later become known as the ‘refugee crisis’. The Willkommenskultur (welcoming culture) trope gained political prominence and met with signifi cant challenges. In this article, we focus on a series of encounters in Berlin, bringing together refugee newcomers, migrants, activists and anthropologists. As we thought and wrote together about shared experiences, we discovered the limitations of the normative assumptions of refugee work. One aim of this article is to destabilise terms such as refugee, refugee work, success and failure with our engagements in the aftermath of the ‘crisis’. Refugee work is not exclusively humanitarian aid directed towards the alleviation of suff ering but includes being and doing together. Through productive failures and emergent lessons, the collaboration enhanced our understandings of social categories and the role of anthropology
