    Water-Electricity-Light System: Technology Innovations

    This paper presents the design of the Water-Electricity-Light System (WELS) that is an integration of technologies composed of rain catcher, mechanical filter and UV irradiation, solar panel, charge converter, LED light, inverter and car battery. We traced back its development from a bulky and expensive system that was meant to generate drinking water into a more innovative water cleaning system that integrated lighting and cellphone charging. We tracked the improvements applied to the system to make the design more efficient yet simple enough to be replicated and customized in order to address varied needs. We shared the alterations made to the system components based on installation experiences in different contexts. We also explored ways to lower its cost and to make its power storage more durable. Initial results are shared in this paper. Having seen its usefulness and realized its successful implementation on the ground, we are proposing the pre-positioning of WELS to promote disaster resilience in a community level. We based this assertion on the review of all documentations done and feedback gathered from our ten-year experience of more than 140 WELS installations all over the Philippines

    Developing an experimental setup for Thunder Bay waste pollution control plant (WPCP) to evaluate UV lamp performance

    An automated experimental setup was developed to measure the spectral irradiance of new low pressure (LP) ultraviolet lamp (UV). The experimental analysis was performed by the measurement of the UV intensity along the length of the lamp to evaluate the variation in UV output during preliminary 5% lifespan of the UV lamp. The automation of the experimental setup has executed with the Arduino-LabVIEW interfaced computer program to maintain sequential collaboration among the setup components. The new LP UV lamp had a non-uniform output with the unexpected rise and drop in the UV intensity at certain locations along the length. The lamp showed predominant ageing signs at the electrode, which was confirmed by the visual observation after the appearance of the darken quartz sleeve near the electrode and further reduction in UV output was verified by the experimental analysis as a result of the obstructed transmittance of the UV radiation through the quartz sleeve. Initially, UV output of the new lamp was uniform; however, as the lamp was aged analysis noticed non-uniform output along the length of the lamp though the lamp was operated for same working conditions throughout the entire experimental phase. The non-uniform temperature profile of the UV lamp was studied with the implementation of the thermal imaging IR camera to confirm variable temperature gradient inside the quartz sleeve and at the surface of the quartz sleeve. The thermal analysis recognized the overheating of the lamp electrode. Further, as amp aged the temperature profile at the lamp electrode raised significantly. The experimental analysis proved that the lamp ageing was more noticeable at lamp ends than the middle part of the lamp, which was confirmed after evaluation of the UV intensity along the length of the lamp as well as after performing the output stability test at electrode for corresponding lamp operating cycle

    The METTTES (More Efficient Transnational Technologies Transfer in the Environmental Sector) Project,focused specifically on the environmental sector, is characterized by a new approach to estimate technological development needs, basing on an analysis of what current or forthcoming EU/national legislation stimulates demand for innovative solutions. This technology demand will be derived at regional level. The regional demand is analyzed in depth and expressed in a detailed document, Regional Demand Profile (RDP), with high-quality, commercially interesting Technology Requests which address both current and future demand (foresight).In this document are presented, for each RDP, technological solutions which have been identified, assessed and collated in a Technological Offer Portfolio. Potential donors and recipients, following intensive preparation, exchange of information and pre-qualification, were brought together at tailor-made matching events in the demand regions

    Stakeholder Management in Maritime Logistics Ecosystems: How tackling the main challenges of the industry

    This PhD thesis deals with stakeholder management theoretical constructs and empirical practices within maritime logistics ecosystems. The rationale of the study grounds on the recent shift of the academic literature\u2019s focus on maritime logistics from the single organisation to the whole business ecosystem. In this perspective, formal and informal relationships with business partners and related parties have been demonstrated to become fundamental for the survival and success of firms and organisations belonging to maritime logistics ecosystems. The constant dialogue and coordination of strategic and operational activities between the heterogeneous actors constitute the preconditions to build wider and more resilient networks as well as to generate benefits for all parties and stakeholders involved. In this context, stakeholder management theoretical constructs can provide maritime logistics firms and organisations with useful managerial practices and best practices for identifying and exploiting unprecedented opportunities to handle relationships and interactions with both business parties and different categories of stakeholders. The variety of actors belonging to maritime logistics ecosystems as well as the array of related stakeholders, that unveils heterogeneous needs and interests, urge further empirical research to disentangle multiple practices of stakeholder management that have not all been investigated yet. In this vein, collaborative and responsible behaviours from maritime logistics firms and other involved organizations may support key actors with facing the new environmental, social, and technological challenges shaping the industry. In this perspective, this PhD thesis examines the main theoretical constructs of stakeholder management by performing an extensive literature review to comprehend the foundations and managerial benefits of stakeholder relationship management and corporate social responsibility. Then, it provides four empirical research to disentangle both strategies and behaviours of different maritime logistics actors, stressing the business benefits and managerial opportunities emerging from the adoption of well-defined and planned stakeholder management practices. Each empirical research addresses multiple challenges (i.e., environmental, social, and technological challenges) and assumes the perspective of one of the key actors of the maritime logistics ecosystem (i.e., once port managing bodies, once shipping companies, and twice terminal operators). The thesis investigates specific dimensions related to the strategic objectives, behaviours, and managerial options of these actors for effectively managing the relationships with their salient stakeholders. The outcomes of empirical research provide four valuable exploratory and qualitative studies grounding on stakeholder management literature. Managerial implications for private, public and hybrid actors of maritime logistics are extensively debated to pave the way for future studies on stakeholder management within this business ecosystem. In this perspective, this PhD thesis would take a step forward in the research on new managerial practices to effectively manage stakeholder relationships in the maritime logistics ecosystem

    NASA SBIR abstracts of 1992, phase 1 projects

    The objectives of 346 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1992 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 346, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1992 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included

    The goal of my thesis is to provide the reader with a better understanding of how to create an environmentally sustainable costume shop. I chose to focus on certain elements of the costume shop that are imperative to the function of the shop, but desperately need to change for the sake of the environment. The elements I focused on were fabric, energy, and chemicals. Armed with a better understanding of why and what needs to be changed, the reader will be able to take this knowledge and apply it to their costume shop and life. We need to change how we interact with the environment and I hope this information will help bring about this action
