    Decoder Hardware Architecture for HEVC

    This chapter provides an overview of the design challenges faced in the implementation of hardware HEVC decoders. These challenges can be attributed to the larger and diverse coding block sizes and transform sizes, the larger interpolation filter for motion compensation, the increased number of steps in intra prediction and the introduction of a new in-loop filter. Several solutions to address these implementation challenges are discussed. As a reference, results for an HEVC decoder test chip are also presented.Texas Instruments Incorporate

    Digital television applications

    Studying development of interactive services for digital television is a leading edge area of work as there is minimal research or precedent to guide their design. Published research is limited and therefore this thesis aims at establishing a set of computing methods using Java and XML technology for future set-top box interactive services. The main issues include middleware architecture, a Java user interface for digital television, content representation and return channel communications. The middleware architecture used was made up of an Application Manager, Application Programming Interface (API), a Java Virtual Machine, etc., which were arranged in a layered model to ensure the interoperability. The application manager was designed to control the lifecycle of Xlets; manage set-top box resources and remote control keys and to adapt the graphical device environment. The architecture of both application manager and Xlet forms the basic framework for running multiple interactive services simultaneously in future set-top box designs. User interface development is more complex for this type of platform (when compared to that for a desktop computer) as many constraints are set on the look and feel (e.g., TV-like and limited buttons). Various aspects of Java user interfaces were studied and my research in this area focused on creating a remote control event model and lightweight drawing components using the Java Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) and Java Media Framework (JMF) together with Extensible Markup Language (XML). Applications were designed aimed at studying the data structure and efficiency of the XML language to define interactive content. Content parsing was designed as a lightweight software module based around two parsers (i.e., SAX parsing and DOM parsing). The still content (i.e., text, images, and graphics) and dynamic content (i.e., hyperlinked text, animations, and forms) can then be modeled and processed efficiently. This thesis also studies interactivity methods using Java APIs via a return channel. Various communication models are also discussed that meet the interactivity requirements for different interactive services. They include URL, Socket, Datagram, and SOAP models which applications can choose to use in order to establish a connection with the service or broadcaster in order to transfer data.     Unified turbo/LDPC code decoder architecture for deep-space communications

    Deep-space communications are characterized by extremely critical conditions; current standards foresee the usage of both turbo and low-density-parity-check (LDPC) codes to ensure recovery from received errors, but each of them displays consistent drawbacks. Code concatenation is widely used in all kinds of communication to boost the error correction capabilities of single codes; serial concatenation of turbo and LDPC codes has been recently proven effective enough for deep space communications, being able to overcome the shortcomings of both code types. This work extends the performance analysis of this scheme and proposes a novel hardware decoder architecture for concatenated turbo and LDPC codes based on the same decoding algorithm. This choice leads to a high degree of datapath and memory sharing; postlayout implementation results obtained with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) 90 nm technology show small area occupation (0.98 mm 2 ) and very low power consumption (2.1 mW)

    Application-Specific Cache and Prefetching for HEVC CABAC Decoding

    Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) is the entropy coding module in the HEVC/H.265 video coding standard. As in its predecessor, H.264/AVC, CABAC is a well-known throughput bottleneck due to its strong data dependencies. Besides other optimizations, the replacement of the context model memory by a smaller cache has been proposed for hardware decoders, resulting in an improved clock frequency. However, the effect of potential cache misses has not been properly evaluated. This work fills the gap by performing an extensive evaluation of different cache configurations. Furthermore, it demonstrates that application-specific context model prefetching can effectively reduce the miss rate and increase the overall performance. The best results are achieved with two cache lines consisting of four or eight context models. The 2 × 8 cache allows a performance improvement of 13.2 percent to 16.7 percent compared to a non-cached decoder due to a 17 percent higher clock frequency and highly effective prefetching.     A survey of digital television broadcast transmission techniques

    This paper is a survey of the transmission techniques used in digital television (TV) standards worldwide. With the increase in the demand for High-Definition (HD) TV, video-on-demand and mobile TV services, there was a real need for more bandwidth-efficient, flawless and crisp video quality, which motivated the migration from analogue to digital broadcasting. In this paper we present a brief history of the development of TV and then we survey the transmission technology used in different digital terrestrial, satellite, cable and mobile TV standards in different parts of the world. First, we present the Digital Video Broadcasting standards developed in Europe for terrestrial (DVB-T/T2), for satellite (DVB-S/S2), for cable (DVB-C) and for hand-held transmission (DVB-H). We then describe the Advanced Television System Committee standards developed in the USA both for terrestrial (ATSC) and for hand-held transmission (ATSC-M/H). We continue by describing the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting standards developed in Japan for Terrestrial (ISDB-T) and Satellite (ISDB-S) transmission and then present the International System for Digital Television (ISDTV), which was developed in Brazil by adopteding the ISDB-T physical layer architecture. Following the ISDTV, we describe the Digital Terrestrial television Multimedia Broadcast (DTMB) standard developed in China.     A 249-Mpixel/s HEVC Video-Decoder Chip for 4K Ultra-HD Applications

    High Efficiency Video Coding, the latest video standard, uses larger and variable-sized coding units and longer interpolation filters than [H.264 over AVC] to better exploit redundancy in video signals. These algorithmic techniques enable a 50% decrease in bitrate at the cost of computational complexity, external memory bandwidth, and, for ASIC implementations, on-chip SRAM of the video codec. This paper describes architectural optimizations for an HEVC video decoder chip. The chip uses a two-stage subpipelining scheme to reduce on-chip SRAM by 56 kbytes-a 32% reduction. A high-throughput read-only cache combined with DRAM-latency-aware memory mapping reduces DRAM bandwidth by 67%. The chip is built for HEVC Working Draft 4 Low Complexity configuration and occupies 1.77 mm[superscript 2] in 40-nm CMOS. It performs 4K Ultra HD 30-fps video decoding at 200 MHz while consuming 1.19 [nJ over pixel] of normalized system power.Texas Instruments Incorporate

    Hardware study on the H.264/AVC video stream parser

    The video standard H.264/AVC is the latest standard jointly developed in 2003 by the ITUT Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). It is an improvement over previous standards, such as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, as it aims to be efficient for a wide range of applications and resolutions, including high definition broadcast television and video for mobile devices. Due to the standardization of the formatted bit stream and video decoder many more applications can take advantage of the abstraction this standard provides by implementing a desired video encoder and simply adhering to the bit stream constraints. The increase in application flexibility and variable resolution support results in the need for more sophisticated decoder implementations and hardware designs become a necessity. It is desirable to consider architectures that focus on the first stage of the video decoding process, where all data and parameter information are recovered, to understand how influential the initial step is to the decoding process and how influential various targeting platforms can be. The focus of this thesis is to study the differences between targeting an original video stream parser architecture for a 65nm ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit), as well as an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). Previous works have concentrated on designing parts of the parser and using numerous platforms; however, the comparison of a single architecture targeting different platforms could lead to further insight into the video stream parser. Overall, the ASIC implementations showed higher performance and lower area than the FPGA, with a 60% increase in performance and 6x decrease in area.
