Hidden cusps
International audienceThis paper investigates a situation pointed out in a recent paper, in which a non-singular change of assembly mode of a planar 2-RPR-PR parallel manipulator was realized by encircling a point of multiplicity 4. It is shown that this situation is, in fact, a non-generic one and gives rise to cusps under a small perturbation. Furthermore , we show that, for a large class of singularities of multiplicity 4, there are only two types of stable singularities occurring in a small perturbation: these two types are given by the complex square mapping and the quarto mapping. Incidentally , this paper confirms the fact that, generically, a local non-singular change of solution must be accomplished by encircling a cusp point
Mutations and short geodesics in hyperbolic 3-manifolds
In this paper, we explicitly construct large classes of incommensurable
hyperbolic knot complements with the same volume and the same initial (complex)
length spectrum. Furthermore, we show that these knot complements are the only
knot complements in their respective commensurabiltiy classes by analyzing
their cusp shapes.
The knot complements in each class differ by a topological cut-and-paste
operation known as mutation. Ruberman has shown that mutations of hyperelliptic
surfaces inside hyperbolic 3-manifolds preserve volume. Here, we provide
geometric and topological conditions under which such mutations also preserve
the initial (complex) length spectrum. This work requires us to analyze when
least area surfaces could intersect short geodesics in a hyperbolic 3-manifold.Comment: This is the final (accepted) version of this pape
Singularity and similarity detection for signals using the wavelet transform
The wavelet transform and related techniques are used to analyze singular and fractal signals. The normalized wavelet scalogram is introduced to detect singularities including jumps, cusps and other sharply changing points. The wavelet auto-covariance is applied to estimate the self-similarity exponent for statistical self-affine signals
