Solving the Uncapacitated Single Allocation p-Hub Median Problem on GPU
A parallel genetic algorithm (GA) implemented on GPU clusters is proposed to
solve the Uncapacitated Single Allocation p-Hub Median problem. The GA uses
binary and integer encoding and genetic operators adapted to this problem. Our
GA is improved by generated initial solution with hubs located at middle nodes.
The obtained experimental results are compared with the best known solutions on
all benchmarks on instances up to 1000 nodes. Furthermore, we solve our own
randomly generated instances up to 6000 nodes. Our approach outperforms most
well-known heuristics in terms of solution quality and time execution and it
allows hitherto unsolved problems to be solved
Hub Network Design Problems with Profits
In this thesis we study a new class of hub location problems denoted as \textit{hub network design problems with profits} which share the same feature: a profit oriented objective. We start from a basic model in which only routing and location decisions are involved. We then investigate more realistic models by incorporating new elements such as different types of network design decisions, service commitments constraints, multiple demand levels, multiple capacity levels and pricing decisions. We present mixed-integer programming formulations for each variant and extension and provide insightful computational analyses regarding to their complexity, network topologies and their added value compared to related hub location problems in the literature. Furthermore, we present an exact algorithmic framework to solve two variants of this class of problems. We continue this study by introducing joint hub location and pricing problems in which pricing decisions are incorporated into the decision-making process. We formulate this problem as a mixed-integer bilevel problem and provide feasible solutions using two math-heuristics. The dissertation ends with some conclusions and comments on avenues of future research
Local search heuristics for multi-index assignment problems with decomposable costs.
The multi-index assignment problem (MIAP) with decomposable costs is a natural generalization of the well-known assignment problem. Applications of the MIAP arise for instance in the field of multi-target multi-sensor tracking. We describe an (exponentially sized) neighborhood for a solution of the MIAP with decomposable costs, and show that one can find a best solution in this neighborhood in polynomial time. Based on this neighborhood, we propose a local search algorithm. We empirically test the performance of published constructive heuristics and the local search algorithm on random instances; a straightforward tabu search is also tested. Routing design for less-than-truckload motor carriers using ant colony techniques
One of the most important challenges for Less-Than-Truck-Load carriers consists of determining how to consolidate flows of small shipments to minimize costs while maintaining a certain level of service. For any origin-destination pair, there are several strategies to consolidate flows, but the most usual ones are: peddling/collecting routes and shipping through one or more break-bulk terminals. Therefore, the target is determining a route for each origin-destination pair that minimizes the total transportation and handling cost guaranteeing a certain level of service. Exact resolution is not viable for real size problems due to the excessive computational time required. This research studies different aspects of the problem and provides a metaheuristic algorithm (based on Ant Colonies Optimization techniques) capable of solving real problems in a reasonable computational time. The viability of the approach has been proved by means of the application of the algorithm to a real Spanish case, obtaining encouraging results
Factory Gate Pricing: An Analysis of the Dutch Retail Distribution
Factory Gate Pricing (FGP) is a relatively new phenomenon in retail distribution. Under FGP, products are no longer delivered at the retailer distribution center, but collected by the retailer at the factory gates of the suppliers. Owing to both the asymmetry in the distribution networks (the supplier sites greatly outnumber the retailer distribution centers) and the better inventory and transport coordination mechanisms, this is likely to result in high savings. A mathematical model was used to analyze the benefits of FGP for a case study in the Dutch retail sector. Extensive numerical results are presented to show the effect of the orchestration shift from supplier to retailer, the improved coordination mechanisms, and sector-wide cooperation.supply chain management;factory gate pricing;retail distribution
Multiclass scheduling algorithms for the DAVID metro network
Abstract—The data and voice integration over dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DAVID) project proposes a metro network architecture based on several wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) rings interconnected via a bufferless optical switch called Hub. The Hub provides a programmable interconnection among rings on the basis of the outcome of a scheduling algorithm. Nodes connected to rings groom traffic from Internet protocol routers and Ethernet switches and share ring resources. In this paper, we address the problem of designing efficient centralized scheduling algorithms for supporting multiclass traffic services in the DAVID metro network. Two traffic classes are considered: a best-effort class, and a high-priority class with bandwidth guarantees. We define the multiclass scheduling problem at the Hub considering two different node architectures: a simpler one that relies on a complete separation between transmission and reception resources (i.e., WDM channels) and a more complex one in which nodes fully share transmission and reception channels using an erasure stage to drop received packets, thereby allowing wavelength reuse. We propose both optimum and heuristic solutions, and evaluate their performance by simulation, showing that heuristic solutions exhibit a behavior very close to the optimum solution.
