    LaMMos - Latching Mechanism based on Motorized-screw for Reconfigurable Robots and Exoskeleton Suits

    Reconfigurable robots refer to a category of robots that their components (individual joints and links) can be assembled in multiple configurations and geometries. Most of existing latching mechanisms are based on physical tools such as hooks, cages or magnets, which limit the payload capacity. Therefore, robots re- quire a latching mechanism which can help to reconfigure itself without sacrificing the payload capability. This paper presents a latching mechanism based on the flexible screw attaching principle. In which, actuators are used to move the robot links and joints while connecting them with a motorized-screw and dis- connecting them by unfastening the screw. The brackets used in our mechanism configuration helps to hold maximum force up to 5000N. The LaMMos - Latching Mechanism based on Motorized- screw has been applied to the DeWaLoP - Developing Water Loss Prevention in-pipe robot. It helps the robot to shrink its body to crawl into the pipe with minimum diameter, by recon- figuring the leg positions. And it helps to recover the legs positions to original status once the robot is inside the pipe. Also, LaMMos add stiffness to the robot legs by dynamically integrate them to the structure. Additionally, we present an application of the LaMMos mechanism to exoskeleton suits, for easing the mo- tors from the joints when carrying heavy weights for long periods of time. This mechanism offers many interesting opportunities for robotics research in terms of functionality, pay- load and size.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure

    Heterogeneous Self-Reconfiguring Robotics: Ph.D. Thesis Proposal

    Self-reconfiguring robots are modular systems that can change shape, or reconfigure, to match structure to task. They comprise many small, discrete, often identical modules that connect together and that are minimally actuated. Global shape transformation is achieved by composing local motions. Systems with a single module type, known as homogeneous systems, gain fault tolerance, robustness and low production cost from module interchangeability. However, we are interested in heterogeneous systems, which include multiple types of modules such as those with sensors, batteries or wheels. We believe that heterogeneous systems offer the same benefits as homogeneous systems with the added ability to match not only structure to task, but also capability to task. Although significant results have been achieved in understanding homogeneous systems, research in heterogeneous systems is challenging as key algorithmic issues remain unexplored. We propose in this thesis to investigate questions in four main areas: 1) how to classify heterogeneous systems, 2) how to develop efficient heterogeneous reconfiguration algorithms with desired characteristics, 3) how to characterize the complexity of key algorithmic problems, and 4) how to apply these heterogeneous algorithms to perform useful new tasks in simulation and in the physical world. Our goal is to develop an algorithmic basis for heterogeneous systems. This has theoretical significance in that it addresses a major open problem in the field, and practical significance in providing self-reconfiguring robots with increased capabilities

    High-Dimensional Design Evaluations For Self-Aligning Geometries

    Physical connectors with self-aligning geometry aid in the docking process for many robotic and automatic control systems such as robotic self-reconfiguration and air-to-air refueling. This self-aligning geometry provides a wider range of acceptable error tolerance in relative pose between the two rigid objects, increasing successful docking chances. In a broader context, mechanical alignment properties are also useful for other cases such as foot placement and stability, grasping or manipulation. Previously, computational limitations and costly algorithms prevented high-dimensional analysis. The algorithms presented in this dissertation will show a reduced computational time and improved resolution for this kind of problem. This dissertation reviews multiple methods for evaluating modular robot connector geometries as a case study in determining alignment properties. Several metrics are introduced in terms of the robustness of the alignment to errors across the full dimensional range of possible offsets. Algorithms for quantifying error robustness will be introduced and compared in terms of accuracy, reliability, and computational cost. Connector robustness is then compared across multiple design parameters to find trends in alignment behavior. Methods developed and compared include direct simulation and contact space analysis algorithms (geometric by a \u27pre-partitioning\u27 method, and discrete by flooding). Experimental verification for certain subsets is also performed to confirm the results. By evaluating connectors using these algorithms we obtain concrete metric values. We then quantitatively compare their alignment capabilities in either SE(2) or SE(3) under a pseudo-static assumption

    Connectors for self-reconfiguring robots need to fulfill a wide range of requirements. We discuss these properties, with emphasis on geometrical shape and latching. We describe the DRAGON modular connector, whose most distinctive features are its ability to self-align and its strength. It weighs 170 g, but holds over 70 kg load. It is able to self-align /spl plusmn/15 mm (O/5) lateral offsets, and /spl plusmn/45/spl deg/ directional and rotational offsets

    Heterogeneous Self-Reconfiguring Robotics

    Self-reconfiguring (SR) robots are modular systems that can autonomously change shape, or reconfigure, for increased versatility and adaptability in unknown environments. In this thesis, we investigate planning and control for systems of non-identical modules, known as heterogeneous SR robots. Although previous approaches rely on module homogeneity as a critical property, we show that the planning complexity of fundamental algorithmic problems in the heterogeneous case is equivalent to that of systems with identical modules. Primarily, we study the problem of how to plan shape changes while considering the placement of specific modules within the structure. We characterize this key challenge in terms of the amount of free space available to the robot and develop a series of decentralized reconfiguration planning algorithms that assume progressively more severe free space constraints and support reconfiguration among obstacles. In addition, we compose our basic planning techniques in different ways to address problems in the related task domains of positioning modules according to function, locomotion among obstacles, self-repair, and recognizing the achievement of distributed goal-states. We also describe the design of a novel simulation environment, implementation results using this simulator, and experimental results in hardware using a planar SR system called the Crystal Robot. These results encourage development of heterogeneous systems. Our algorithms enhance the versatility and adaptability of SR robots by enabling them to use functionally specialized components to match capability, in addition to shape, to the task at hand

To make programmable matter economical to fabricate, we want to use electromagnetic direct drive, rather than clockwork, to actuate the particles. Previous attempts to fabricate small scale (below one centimeter) robotic systems with electromagnetic direct-drive have typically run into problems with insufficient force or torque, excessive power consumption and heat generation (for magnetic-drive systems), or high-voltage requirements, humidity sensitivity, and air breakdown. (for electrostatic-drive systems) The electropermanent magnet is a solid-state device whose external magnetic flux can be stably switched on and off by a discrete electrical pulse. Electropermanent magnets can provide low-power connection and actuation for programmable matter and other small-scale robotic systems. The first chapter covers the electropermanent magnet, its physics, scaling, fabrication, and our experimental device performance data. The second introduces the idea of electropermanent actuators, covers their fundamental limits and scaling, and shows prototype devices and performance measurements. The third chapter describes the smart pebbles system, which consists of 12-mm cubes that can form shapes by stochastic self-assembly and self-disassembly.     Modular Robots Morphology Transformation And Task Execution

    Self-reconfigurable modular robots are composed of a small set of modules with uniform docking interfaces. Different from conventional robots that are custom-built and optimized for specific tasks, modular robots are able to adapt to many different activities and handle hardware and software failures by rearranging their components. This reconfiguration capability allows these systems to exist in a variety of morphologies, and the introduced flexibility enables self-reconfigurable modular robots to handle a much wider range of tasks, but also complicates the design, control, and planning. This thesis considers a hierarchy framework to deploy modular robots in the real world: the robot first identifies its current morphology, then reconfigures itself into a new morphology if needed, and finally executes either manipulation or locomotion tasks. A reliable system architecture is necessary to handle a large number of modules. The number of possible morphologies constructed by modules increases exponentially as the number of modules grows, and these morphologies usually have many degrees of freedom with complex constraints. In this thesis, hardware platforms and several control methods and planning algorithms are developed to build this hierarchy framework leading to the system-level deployment of modular robots, including a hybrid modular robot (SMORES-EP) and a modular truss robot (VTT). Graph representations of modular robots are introduced as well as several algorithms for morphology identification. Efficient mobile-stylereconfiguration strategies are explored for hybrid modular robots, and a real-time planner based on optimal control is developed to perform dexterous manipulation tasks. For modular truss robots, configuration space is studied and a hybrid planning framework (sampling-based and search-based) is presented to handle reconfiguration activities. A non-impact rolling locomotion planner is then developed to drive an arbitrary truss robot in an environment

    Design and Experimental Evaluation of a Hybrid Wheeled-Leg Exploration Rover in the Context of Multi-Robot Systems

    With this dissertation, the electromechanic design, implementation, locomotion control, and experimental evaluation of a novel type of hybrid wheeled-leg exploration rover are presented. The actively articulated suspension system of the rover is the basis for advanced locomotive capabilities of a mobile exploration robot. The developed locomotion control system abstracts the complex kinematics of the suspension system and provides platform control inputs usable by autonomous behaviors or human remote control. Design and control of the suspension system as well as experimentation with the resulting rover are in the focus of this thesis. The rover is part of a heterogeneous modular multi-robot exploration system with an aspired sample return mission to the lunar south pole or currently hard-to-access regions on Mars. The multi-robot system pursues a modular and reconfigurable design methodology. It combines heterogeneous robots with different locomotion capabilities for enhanced overall performance. Consequently, the design of the multi-robot system is presented as the frame of the rover developments. The requirements for the rover design originating from the deployment in a modular multi-robot system are accentuated and summarized in this thesis
