Background : Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is both an infectious disease with a substantial prevalence in Indonesia and one of the 10 leading causes of death worldwide. Therefore, researches about risk factors influencing death in CAP patients are required.Aim : To analyze risk factors associated with death among patients with CAP in RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang. Methods : This is an analytic observational research with a cross-sectional design. The sample was 96 adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia who were registered in RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang from July 2013 to July 2014. The data for risk factors were taken from secondary source which was their medical records. The risk factors studied here were sex, age, history of smoking, diabetes mellitus, asthma, serum natrium concentration, respiratory rate, blood pressure, body temperature, neoplasms, and death, each of which were categorized binomial categorically. The association between risk factors and death was statistically analyzed using Chi-square followed by logistic regression. Results : Risk factors associated with death in CAP patients in this research are diabetes mellitus with prevalence ratio (PR) 4,7 (95% CI: 1,2 – 18,3), respiratory rate (>30x/minute) with PR 10,9 (95% CI: 3,0 – 39,6), blood pressure systolic <90 mmHg or diastolic ≤60 mmHg) with RP 8,8 (95% CI: 2,4 – 32,0), temperature (<35°C atau ≥40°C) with PR 25,0 (95% CI: 2,7 – 245,9), and neoplasm with PR 10,2 (95% CI: 2,2 – 47,0).Conclusion : Risk factors associated with death among community-acquired pneumonia patients are respiratory rate, blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and neoplasm

Background: Recently the worldwide usage of earphones has increased especially among the school and college students who have a high rate of sharing among them. Alike airline headsets, headphones and stethoscope ear-pieces, ear phones can easily be a vector of potential pathogens, which can give rise to otitis externa. Purpose: To compare the bacterial growth of the external ear in association with earphone and assess the role of earphones as vector or microorganisms. Material and Methods: 50 voluntary male subjects (age 18-25 years) were chosen and divided into two groups, A and B, according to the use of earphones. Swabs were taken from their left ear and the left earpiece of the earphone. Samples were processed as recommended. Results: In group A, bacteria were found in 20 (80%) ear and 14 (56%) earphone swabs. In group B, bacteria were found in 23 (92%) ear and 17 (68%) earphone swabs. Group B showed heavy growth and a significant increase in the number of bacterial growths after frequent and constant use. Conclusion: Frequent and constant use of earphones increases the bacterial growth in the ear and sharing of earphones might be a potential vector of commensals. It is therefore, always better not to share or else to clean the earphones before sharin

Role of Panchkarma in the management of Guillain Barre Syndrome

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare disorder in which your body’s immune system attacks your nerves. The syndrome afflicts about one person in 100,000. Either gender can be affected in any age group especially between ages 30 and 50, however risk increases with age. The exact cause of GBS is unknown. It is often preceded by an infection such as respiratory infection or stomach flu. Most of the time, signs of the original infection have disappeared before the symptoms of Guillain-Barre begin. Guillain-Barre syndrome damages parts of nerves. This nerve damage causes tingling, muscle weakness and paralysis. Guillain-Barre syndrome most often affects the nerve's covering (myelin sheath). Such damage is called demyelination and it causes nerve signals to move more slowly. Damage to other parts of the nerve can cause the nerve to stop working altogether. It is a paralyzing syndrome which can have dire consequences if not managed by an informed medical team. As per as Ayurvedic concept, based on various clinical presentations of G.B. Syndrome, it can be correlated with Kaphavrut Vata, Medavruta Vata, Sarvang Vata, too. Thus based on involvement of Dosha, Dhatu, Mala and patient condition one should plan the different Ayurvedic line of treatment. This article will explain how this disorder begins, how it is managed in Ayurveda by taking help of the Panchkarma procedures such as Basti, Abhayanga etc

Prevalence of antibodies to Hepatitis C virus among Nigerian patients with HIV infection

    Get PDF
Nigeria belongs to the group of countries highly endemic for viral hepatitis; unfortunately information on the prevalence of hepatitis C amongst patients with HIV in Nigeria is very scarce. This hospital-based investigation was conducted at two major hospitals in Jos, Nigeria from June 2002 through May 2003. Serum samples from 490 confirmed HIV infected patients were assayed for the presence of antibodies to HCV, using a third generation enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Twenty eight (5.7%; 95% CI 3.66-7.76%) of the patients had antibodies to HCV. The prevalence of HCV antibodies was higher among the males (7.5%; 95% CI 3.83-11.09%) than the females (4.5%; 95% CI 2.10-6.88%). Statistical analysis showed no significant difference (x2 = 1.917, df =1, p=0.05). Individuals of the age group 41-50 years had the highest prevalence of HCV antibodies (15.4%; 95% CI. 7.37-23.29%), followed by those of age group 31-40 years (7.4%; 95%, CI 3.70-11.20%). A significant difference was observed in the association between age and prevalence of HCV antibodies (x2 = 24.151, df = 4, p =0.05). Early diagnosis of HCV in people with HIV infection is advocated to reduce risk of HCV related advanced liver disease

CANCELING VS. #CANCEL CULTURE: AN ANALYSIS ON THE SURVEILLANCE AND DISCIPLINE OF SOCIAL MEDIA BEHAVIOR THROUGH COMPETING DISCOURSES OF POWER

    Get PDF
Canceling and #cancelculture have become the topic of many debates over free speech and accountability for oppressive behaviors in social media discourse. This thesis examines Twitter discourse from two recent racism-based cancel cases. Using Foss and Gill’s (1987) adapted epistemic rhetoric framework and emphasizing elements of Foucauldian surveillance and discipline in the discourse, I conduct a comparative qualitative examination of Gina Rodriguez’s and Chris Harrison’s cancel discourse. I contend that in the cancel process, Twitter users engage in surveillance to discipline one another on multiple levels: first, as cancelers use the practice to discipline oppressive behaviors on social media, and second as the anti-cancel group disciplines engagement in the #cancelculture. As Twitter users struggle to contend for power through discourse about each cancel case, members of the dominant culture invalidate canceling as a practice to maintain the status quo. Ethical and moral debates erupt over #cancelculture, directing the discourse away from a resistive tool to challenge dominant ideologies on social media. In the power struggle between pro- and anti-cancel groups, anti-cancel rhetoric tends to have more power to create knowledge and control discourse on Twitter. In each case study, the most significant knowledge produced is a negative connotation with #cancelculture and the impression that practicing canceling is not the “right” way to challenge harmful dominant ideology
