    Hardware Acceleration of HDR-Image Tone Mapping on an FPGA-CPU Platform Through High-Level Synthesis

    In this paper, the hardware acceleration of a tone-mapping algorithm for High-Dynamic-Range image processing is presented. Starting from the C++ source code, High-Level Synthesis has been performed using Xilinx SDSoC for a Xilinx Zynq SoC device. After an initial code optimization to improve the memory access bottleneck, SDSoC pragmas have been introduced to boost system performance through an increased parallelism. Preliminary results have shown significant reductions in the execution time and the energy consumption compared to the conventional software implementation

    Project and development of hardware accelerators for fast computing in multimedia processing

    2017 - 2018The main aim of the present research work is to project and develop very large scale electronic integrated circuits, with particular attention to the ones devoted to image processing applications and the related topics. In particular, the candidate has mainly investigated four topics, detailed in the following. First, the candidate has developed a novel multiplier circuit capable of obtaining floating point (FP32) results, given as inputs an integer value from a fixed integer range and a set of fixed point (FI) values. The result has been accomplished exploiting a series of theorems and results on a number theory problem, known as Bachet’s problem, which allows the development of a new Distributed Arithmetic (DA) based on 3’s partitions. This kind of application results very fit for filtering applications working on an integer fixed input range, such in image processing applications, in which the pixels are coded on 8 bits per channel. In fact, in these applications the main problem is related to the high area and power consumption due to the presence of many Multiply and Accumulate (MAC) units, also compromising real-time requirements due to the complexity of FP32 operations. For these reasons, FI implementations are usually preferred, at the cost of lower accuracies. The results for the single multiplier and for a filter of dimensions 3x3 show respectively delay of 2.456 ns and 4.7 ns on FPGA platform and 2.18 ns and 4.426 ns on 90nm std_cell TSMC 90 nm implementation. Comparisons with state-of-the-art FP32 multipliers show a speed increase of up to 94.7% and an area reduction of 69.3% on FPGA platform. ... [edited by Author]XXXI cicl

    Trading off Energy versus Accuracy in Modern Computing Systems:From Digital Circuit Design to Programming Techniques

    The slowdown of Moore's law, which has been the driving force of the electronics industry over the last 5 decades, is causing serious problem to Integrated Circuits (ICs) improvements. Technology scaling is becoming more and more complex and fabrication costs are growing exponentially. Furthermore, the energy gains associated to technology scaling are slowing down. Meanwhile, the expected boom of Internet of Things (IoT) devices requires ultra-low power ICs to be able to operate for several years without any user intervention, and energy-efficient computing system on the server side to treat all the gathered data. Approximate computing has emerged as an alternative way to improve energy-efficiency of both, high-performance and low-power computing systems by tolerating small and occasional errors. This energy-accuracy tradeoff can be applied on a wide range of over-engineered applications, particularly those involving human senses such as video and image processing. This thesis first presents an approximate circuit design technique called Gate-Level Pruning, which consists in selectively removing logic gates from any conventional circuit in order to reduce energy consumption, critical path delay, and area occupied on silicon. A Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool has been developed and integrated in the standard digital flow and has been evaluated on several arithmetic circuits, achieving up to 78% energy-delay-area savings. It is then shown how this methodology can be applied on more complex systems made of multiple arithmetic blocks but also memory: the discrete Cosine Transform(DCT), which is a key building block for image and video processing applications. Then, the speculative adder technique is presented. It consists in cutting carry chains to significantly relax the circuit timing constraints', and therefore drastically reduce energy consumption, area and delay. It is shown that this technique leads to errors of different nature than those produced by gate-level pruning. It is therefore worth combining GLP and speculative adders to obtain even higher savings. This has been verified on IEEE-754 floating point units integrated in a 65nm process within a low-power multi-core processor. Silicon measurements show up to 27% power, 36% area and 53% power-area savings. The second part of this thesis introduces software techniques to achieve similar energy-accuracy tradeoffs on commercially available processors. By switching from double precision to single precision floating-point data type and by exploiting vectorization capabilities of modern processors, a factor 2 energy can be saved on a Newton method for solving nonlinear equations. To further investigate the origins of these savings, an energy model based on Energy Per Instructions (EPI) has been built. It turns out that less than 6% of the total energy is consumed by arithmetic operations and that savings are achieved mainly by reducing the amount of data transferred between registers, cache and main memory. One way to reduce those power-hungry data movements is to use application specific hardware accelerators. Unfortunately, a commercial processor cannot embark accelerators for all the possible applications. To that extent, hardware accelerators are implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) interconnected with a general-purpose processor to further reduce the energy consumption

    Efficient streaming for high fidelity imaging

    Researchers and practitioners of graphics, visualisation and imaging have an ever-expanding list of technologies to account for, including (but not limited to) HDR, VR, 4K, 360°, light field and wide colour gamut. As these technologies move from theory to practice, the methods of encoding and transmitting this information need to become more advanced and capable year on year, placing greater demands on latency, bandwidth, and encoding performance. High dynamic range (HDR) video is still in its infancy; the tools for capture, transmission and display of true HDR content are still restricted to professional technicians. Meanwhile, computer graphics are nowadays near-ubiquitous, but to achieve the highest fidelity in real or even reasonable time a user must be located at or near a supercomputer or other specialist workstation. These physical requirements mean that it is not always possible to demonstrate these graphics in any given place at any time, and when the graphics in question are intended to provide a virtual reality experience, the constrains on performance and latency are even tighter. This thesis presents an overall framework for adapting upcoming imaging technologies for efficient streaming, constituting novel work across three areas of imaging technology. Over the course of the thesis, high dynamic range capture, transmission and display is considered, before specifically focusing on the transmission and display of high fidelity rendered graphics, including HDR graphics. Finally, this thesis considers the technical challenges posed by incoming head-mounted displays (HMDs). In addition, a full literature review is presented across all three of these areas, detailing state-of-the-art methods for approaching all three problem sets. In the area of high dynamic range capture, transmission and display, a framework is presented and evaluated for efficient processing, streaming and encoding of high dynamic range video using general-purpose graphics processing unit (GPGPU) technologies. For remote rendering, state-of-the-art methods of augmenting a streamed graphical render are adapted to incorporate HDR video and high fidelity graphics rendering, specifically with regards to path tracing. Finally, a novel method is proposed for streaming graphics to a HMD for virtual reality (VR). This method utilises 360° projections to transmit and reproject stereo imagery to a HMD with minimal latency, with an adaptation for the rapid local production of depth maps

    Optimierung der Energie und Power getriebenen Architekturexploration für Multicore und heterogenes System on Chip

    The contribution of this work builds on top of the established virtual prototype platforms to improve both SoC design quality and productivity. Initially, an automatic system-level power estimation framework was developed to address the critical issue of early power estimation in SoC design. The estimation framework models the static and dynamic power consumption of the hardware components. These models are created from the normalized values of the basic design components of SoC, obtained through one-time power simulation of RTL hardware models. The framework allows dynamic technology node reconfiguration for power estimation models. Its instantaneous power reporting aids the detection of possible hotspot early into the design process. Adding this additional data in conjunction with a steadily growing design space of complex heterogeneous SoC, finding the right parameter configuration is a challenging and laborious task for a system-level designer. This work addresses this bottleneck by optimizing the design space exploration (DSE) process for MPSoC design. An automatic DSE framework for virtual platforms (VPs) was developed which is flexible and allows the selection optimal parameter configuration without pre-existing knowledge. To reduce exploration time, the framework is equipped with several multi-objective optimization techniques based on simulated annealing and a genetic algorithm. Lastly, to aid HW/SW partitioning at system-level, a flexible and automated workflow (SW2TLM) is presented. It allows the designer to explore various possible partitioning scenarios without going into depth of the hardware architecture complexity and software integration. The framework generates system-level hardware accelerators from corresponding functionality encoded in the software code and integrates them into the VP. Power consumption and time speedups of acceleration is reported to the designer, which further increases the quality and productivity of the development process towards the final architecture. The presented tools are evaluated using a state-of-the-art VP for a range of single and multi-core applications. Viewing the energy delay product, a reduction in exploration time was recorded at approximately 62% (worst case), maintaining optimal parameter accuracy of 90% compared to previous techniques. While the SW2TLM further increases the exploration versatility by combining modern high-level synthesis with system-level architectural exploration.Der Beitrag dieser Arbeit baut auf dem etablierten Konzept der virtuellen Prototyp (VP) Plattformen auf, um die Qualität und die Produktivität des Entwurfsprozesses zu verbessern. Zunächst wurde ein automatisches System-Level-Framework entwickelt, um Verlustleistungsabschätzung für SoC-Designs in einer deutlich früheren Entwicklungsphase zu ermöglichen. Hierfür werden statischen und dynamischen Energieverbrauchsanteile individueller Hardwareelemente durch ein abstraktes Modell ausgedrückt. Das Framework ermöglicht eine dynamische Anpassung des Technologieknotens sowie die Integration neuer Leistungsmodelle für Drittanbieterkomponenten. Die kontinuierliche Erfassung der Energieverbrauchseigenschaften und ihre grafische Darstellung Benutzeroberfläche unterstützt zusätzlich die frühzeitige Identifikation möglicher Hotspots. Durch die Bereitstellung zusätzlicher Daten, in Verbindung mit einem stetig wachsenden Entwurfsraum komplexer SoCs, ist die Identifikation der richtigen Parameterkonfiguration eine zeitintensive Aufgabe. Die vorgelegten Konzepte erlauben eine gesteigerte Automatisierung des Explorationsprozesses. Techniken der mehrdimensionalen Optimierung, basierend auf Simulated Annealing und genetischer Algorithmen erlauben die Identifikation von geeigneten Konfigurationen ohne vorheriges Wissen oder Erfahrungswerte Schließlich wurde zur Unterstützung der HW/SW -Partitionierung auf System-Ebene ein flexibler und automatisierter Workflow entwickelt. Er ermöglicht es dem Designer verschiedene mögliche Partitionierungsszenarien zu untersuchen, ohne sich in die Komplexität der Hardwarearchitektur und der Softwareintegration zu vertiefen. Das Framework erzeugt abstrakte Beschleunigermodelle aus entsprechenden Softwarefunktionen und integriert sie nahtlos in den ausführbare VP. Detaillierte Daten zum Energieverbrauch, Beschleunigungsfaktor und Kommunikationsoverhead der Partitionierung werden erfasst und dem Designer zur Verfügung gestellt, was die Qualität und Produktivität des weiter erhöht. Die vorgestellten Tools werden mit einer modernen VP für verschiedene SW-Anwendungen evaluiert. Bei Betrachtung des Energieverzögerungsprodukts wurde eine Verringerung der Explorationszeit um mehr als 62% bei 90% Parametergenauigkeit festgestell. Darauf aufbauend, erleichtert die automatisierte Untersuchung verschiedener HW/SW Partitionierungen die Entwicklung heterogener Architekturen durch die Kombination moderner HLS mit Architektur-Exploration auf der Systemebene

    Contributions à l'optimisation de programmes et à la synthèse de circuits haut-niveau

    Since the end of Dennard scaling, power efficiency is the limiting factor for large-scale computing. Hardware accelerators such as reconfigurable circuits (FPGA, CGRA) or Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) were introduced to improve the performance under a limited energy budget, resulting into complex heterogeneous platforms. This document presents a synthetic description of my research activities over the last decade on compilers for high-performance computing and high-level synthesis of circuits (HLS) for FPGA accelerators. Specifically, my contributions covers both theoretical and practical aspects of automatic parallelization and HLS in a general theoretical framework called the polyhedral model.A first chapter describes our contributions to loop tiling, a key program transformation for automatic parallelization which splits the computation atomic blocks called tiles.We rephrase loop tiling in the polyhedral model to enable any polyhedral tile shape whose size depends on a single parameter (monoparametric tiling), and we present a tiling transformation for programs with reductions – accumulations w.r.t. an associative/commutative operator. Our results open the way for semantic program transformations ; program transformations which does not preserve the computation but still lead to an equivalent program.A second chapter describes our contributions to algorithm recognition. A compiler optimization will never replace a good algorithm, hence the idea to recognize algorithm instances in a program and to substitute them by a call to a performance library. In our PhD thesis, we have addressed the recognition of templates – functionswith first-order variables – into programs and its application to program optimization. We propose a complementary algorithm recognition framework which leverages our monoparametric tiling and our reduction tiling transformations. This automates semantic tiling, a new semantic program transformation which increases the grain of operators (scalar → matrix).A third chapter presents our contributions to the synthesis of communications with an off-chip memory in the context of high-level circuit synthesis (HLS). We propose an execution model based on loop tiling, a pipelined architecture and a source-level compilation algorithm which, connected to the C2H HLS tool from Altera, ends up to a FPGA configuration with minimized data transfers. Our compilation algorithm is optimal – the data are loaded as late as possible and stored as soon as possible with a maximal reuse.A fourth chapter presents our contributions to design a unified polyhedral compilation model for high-level circuit synthesis.We present the Data-aware Process Networks (DPN), a dataflow intermediate representation which leverages the ideas developed in chapter 3 to explicit the data transfers with an off-chip memory. We propose an algorithm to compile a DPN from a sequential program, and we present our contribution to the synthesis of DPN to a circuit. In particular, we present our algorithms to compile the control, the channels and the synchronizations of a DPN. These results are used in the production compiler of the Xtremlogic start-up.Depuis la fin du Dennard scaling, l’efficacité énergétique est le facteur limitant pour le calcul haute performance. Les accélérateurs matériels comme les circuits reconfigurables (FPGA, CGRA) ou les accélérateurs graphiques (GPUs) ont été introduits pour améliorer les performances sous un budget énergétique limité, menant à des plateformes hétérogènes complexes.Mes travaux de recherche portent sur les compilateurs et la synthèse de circuits haut-niveau (High-Level Synthesis, HLS) pour le calcul haute-performance. Specifiquement, mes contributions couvrent les aspects théoriques etpratiques de la parallélisation automatique et la HLS dans le cadre général du modèle polyédrique.Un premier chapitre décrit mes contributions au tuilage de boucles, une transformation fondamentale pour la parallélisation automatique, qui découpe le calcul en sous-calculs atomiques appelés tuiles. Nous reformulons le tuilage de boucles dans le modèle polyédrique pour permettre n’importe tuile polytopique dont la taille dépend d’un facteur homothétique (tuilage monoparamétrique), et nous décrivons une transformation de tuilage pour des programmes avec des réductions – une accumulation selon un opérateur associative et commutatif. Nos résultats ouvrent la voie à des transformations de programme sémantiques ; qui ne préservent pas le calcul, mais produisent un programme équivalent.Un second chapitre décrit mes contributions à la reconnaissance d’algorithmes. Une optimisation de compilateur ne remplacera jamais un bon algorithme, d’où l’idée de reconnaître les instances d’un algorithme dans un programme et de les substituer par un appel vers une bibliothèque hauteperformance, chaque fois que c’est possible et utile.Dans notre thèse, nous avons traité la reconnaissance de templates – des fonctions avec des variables d’ordre 1 – dans un programme et son application à l’optimisation de programes. Nous proposons une approche complémentaire qui s’appuie sur notre tuilage monoparamétrique complété par une transformation pour tuiler les réductions. Ceci automatise le tuilage sémantique, une nouvelle transformation sémantique qui augmente le grain des opérateurs (scalaire → matrice).Un troisième chapitre présente mes contributions à la synthèse des communications avec une mémoire off-chip dans le contexte de la synthèse de circuits haut-niveau. Nous proposons un modèle d’exécution basé sur le tuilage de boucles, une architecture pipelinée et un algorithme de compilation source-à-source qui, connecté à l’outil de HLS C2H d’Altera, produit une configuration de circuit FPGA qui réalise un volume minimal de transferts de données. Notre algorithme est optimal – les données sont chargées le plus tard possible et stockées le plus tôt possible, avec une réutilisation maximale et sans redondances.Enfin, un quatrième chapitre présente mes contributions pour construire un modèle de compilation polyédrique unifié pour la synthèse de circuits haut-niveau.Nous présentons les réseaux de processus DPN (Data-aware Process Networks), une représentation intermédiaire dataflow qui s’appuie sur les idées développées au chapitre 3 pour expliciter les transferts de données entre le circuit et la mémoire off-chip. Nous proposons une suite d’algorithmes pour compiler un DPN à partir d’un programme séquentiel et nous présentons nos contributions à la synthèse d’un DPN en circuit. En particulier, nous présentons nos algorithmes pour compiler le contrôle, les canaux et les synchronisations d’un DPN.     Towards Predictive Rendering in Virtual Reality

    The strive for generating predictive images, i.e., images representing radiometrically correct renditions of reality, has been a longstanding problem in computer graphics. The exactness of such images is extremely important for Virtual Reality applications like Virtual Prototyping, where users need to make decisions impacting large investments based on the simulated images. Unfortunately, generation of predictive imagery is still an unsolved problem due to manifold reasons, especially if real-time restrictions apply. First, existing scenes used for rendering are not modeled accurately enough to create predictive images. Second, even with huge computational efforts existing rendering algorithms are not able to produce radiometrically correct images. Third, current display devices need to convert rendered images into some low-dimensional color space, which prohibits display of radiometrically correct images. Overcoming these limitations is the focus of current state-of-the-art research. This thesis also contributes to this task. First, it briefly introduces the necessary background and identifies the steps required for real-time predictive image generation. Then, existing techniques targeting these steps are presented and their limitations are pointed out. To solve some of the remaining problems, novel techniques are proposed. They cover various steps in the predictive image generation process, ranging from accurate scene modeling over efficient data representation to high-quality, real-time rendering. A special focus of this thesis lays on real-time generation of predictive images using bidirectional texture functions (BTFs), i.e., very accurate representations for spatially varying surface materials. The techniques proposed by this thesis enable efficient handling of BTFs by compressing the huge amount of data contained in this material representation, applying them to geometric surfaces using texture and BTF synthesis techniques, and rendering BTF covered objects in real-time. Further approaches proposed in this thesis target inclusion of real-time global illumination effects or more efficient rendering using novel level-of-detail representations for geometric objects. Finally, this thesis assesses the rendering quality achievable with BTF materials, indicating a significant increase in realism but also confirming the remainder of problems to be solved to achieve truly predictive image generation

    Holistic Optimization of Embedded Computer Vision Systems

    Despite strong interest in embedded computer vision, the computational demands of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) inference far exceed the resources available in embedded devices. Thankfully, the typical embedded device has a number of desirable properties that can be leveraged to significantly reduce the time and energy required for CNN inference. This thesis presents three independent and synergistic methods for optimizing embedded computer vision: 1) Reducing the time and energy needed to capture and preprocess input images by optimizing the image capture pipeline for the needs of CNNs rather than humans. 2) Exploiting temporal redundancy within incoming video streams to perform computationally cheap motion estimation and compensation in lieu of full CNN inference for the majority of frames. 3) Leveraging the sparsity of CNN activations within the frequency domain to significantly reduce the number of operations needed for inference. Collectively these techniques significantly reduce the time and energy needed for computer vision at the edge, enabling a wide variety of exciting new applications
