    Haptics and directional audio using acoustic metasurfaces

    The ability to control acoustic fields offers many possible applications in loudspeaker design, ultrasound imaging, medical therapy, and acoustic levitation. Sound waves are currently shaped using phased array systems, even though the complex electronics required are expensive and hinder widespread use. Here we show how to control, direct, and manipulate sound using 2-dimensional, planar, acoustic metasurfaces that require only one driving signal. This offers the advantages of ease of use and versatility over currently available phased arrays. We demonstrate the creation of a haptic sensation and steering of a beam produced by a parametric speaker. This simple, yet highly effective, method of creating single-beam manipulators could be introduced in medical or manufacturing applications

    A flexible spiraling-metasurface as a versatile haptic interface

    Haptic feedback is the most significant sensory interface following visual cues. Developing thin, flexible surfaces that function as haptic interfaces is important for augmenting virtual reality, wearable devices, robotics and prostheses. For example, adding a haptic feedback interface to prosthesis could improve their acceptance among amputees. State of the art programmable interfaces targeting the skin feel-of-touch through mechano-receptors are limited by inadequate sensory feedback, cumbersome mechanisms or narrow frequency of operation. Here, we present a flexible metasurface as a generic haptic interface capable of producing complex tactile patterns on the human skin at wide range of frequencies. The metasurface is composed of multiple "pixels" that can locally amplify both input displacements and forces. Each of these pixels encodes various deformation patterns capable of producing different sensations on contact. The metasurface can transform a harmonic signal containing multiple frequencies into a complex preprogrammed tactile pattern. Our findings, corroborated by user studies conducted on human candidates, can open new avenues for wearable and robotic interfaces

    Multisensory Integration as per Technological Advances: A Review

    Multisensory integration research has allowed us to better understand how humans integrate sensory information to produce a unitary experience of the external world. However, this field is often challenged by the limited ability to deliver and control sensory stimuli, especially when going beyond audio–visual events and outside laboratory settings. In this review, we examine the scope and challenges of new technology in the study of multisensory integration in a world that is increasingly characterized as a fusion of physical and digital/virtual events. We discuss multisensory integration research through the lens of novel multisensory technologies and, thus, bring research in human–computer interaction, experimental psychology, and neuroscience closer together. Today, for instance, displays have become volumetric so that visual content is no longer limited to 2D screens, new haptic devices enable tactile stimulation without physical contact, olfactory interfaces provide users with smells precisely synchronized with events in virtual environments, and novel gustatory interfaces enable taste perception through levitating stimuli. These technological advances offer new ways to control and deliver sensory stimulation for multisensory integration research beyond traditional laboratory settings and open up new experimentations in naturally occurring events in everyday life experiences. Our review then summarizes these multisensory technologies and discusses initial insights to introduce a bridge between the disciplines in order to advance the study of multisensory integration

    A Prospective Look: Key Enabling Technologies, Applications and Open Research Topics in 6G Networks

    The fifth generation (5G) mobile networks are envisaged to enable a plethora of breakthrough advancements in wireless technologies, providing support of a diverse set of services over a single platform. While the deployment of 5G systems is scaling up globally, it is time to look ahead for beyond 5G systems. This is driven by the emerging societal trends, calling for fully automated systems and intelligent services supported by extended reality and haptics communications. To accommodate the stringent requirements of their prospective applications, which are data-driven and defined by extremely low-latency, ultra-reliable, fast and seamless wireless connectivity, research initiatives are currently focusing on a progressive roadmap towards the sixth generation (6G) networks. In this article, we shed light on some of the major enabling technologies for 6G, which are expected to revolutionize the fundamental architectures of cellular networks and provide multiple homogeneous artificial intelligence-empowered services, including distributed communications, control, computing, sensing, and energy, from its core to its end nodes. Particularly, this paper aims to answer several 6G framework related questions: What are the driving forces for the development of 6G? How will the enabling technologies of 6G differ from those in 5G? What kind of applications and interactions will they support which would not be supported by 5G? We address these questions by presenting a profound study of the 6G vision and outlining five of its disruptive technologies, i.e., terahertz communications, programmable metasurfaces, drone-based communications, backscatter communications and tactile internet, as well as their potential applications. Then, by leveraging the state-of-the-art literature surveyed for each technology, we discuss their requirements, key challenges, and open research problems

    Hapto-Visual Game Design through Mid-Air Haptics and Virtual Reality

    This master thesis covers the design stages of Hapto-Dot, A Haptic - Visual Game, an application that explores the future of new media interactive gaming through mid-air haptic and virtual reality, Game design as a process and game elements as variety of motivating tools are applied in the design process. The purpose of this thesis is to find out how to implement game design process and game elements in multi-sensory immersive new media environments. The study has been conducted within the frames of design research and it consists of two main stages: concept and elaboration. Before conducting the design stages an overview about approaches of game design process and game elements is presented. Concept of Hapto-Dot was evaluated via interviewing sessions with representatives of target group. Results of interviews gave the input for refining the concept and defining game elements in the next elaboration stage. During elaboration stage two iterations were conducted: the first with simulated prototype and the second with functional prototype. Prototypes were play-tested for getting feedback to the design in realistic conditions and for evaluating whether the mobile application is found playful and engaging enough for being popular among target group. As the result of research it could be stated that implementing game design process and game elements in Hapto-Dot was successful and the development of the application

    Ambient Intelligence for Next-Generation AR

    Next-generation augmented reality (AR) promises a high degree of context-awareness - a detailed knowledge of the environmental, user, social and system conditions in which an AR experience takes place. This will facilitate both the closer integration of the real and virtual worlds, and the provision of context-specific content or adaptations. However, environmental awareness in particular is challenging to achieve using AR devices alone; not only are these mobile devices' view of an environment spatially and temporally limited, but the data obtained by onboard sensors is frequently inaccurate and incomplete. This, combined with the fact that many aspects of core AR functionality and user experiences are impacted by properties of the real environment, motivates the use of ambient IoT devices, wireless sensors and actuators placed in the surrounding environment, for the measurement and optimization of environment properties. In this book chapter we categorize and examine the wide variety of ways in which these IoT sensors and actuators can support or enhance AR experiences, including quantitative insights and proof-of-concept systems that will inform the development of future solutions.
