    Level-Planarity: Transitivity vs. Even Crossings

    The strong Hanani-Tutte theorem states that a graph is planar if and only if it can be drawn such that any two edges that do not share an end cross an even number of times. Fulek et al. (2013, 2016, 2017) have presented Hanani-Tutte results for (radial) level-planarity where the yy-coordinates (distances to the origin) of the vertices are prescribed. We show that the 2-SAT formulation of level-planarity testing due to Randerath et al. (2001) is equivalent to the strong Hanani-Tutte theorem for level-planarity (2013). By elevating this relationship to radial level planarity, we obtain a novel polynomial-time algorithm for testing radial level-planarity in the spirit of Randerath et al

    A drawing of a graph G is radial if the vertices of G are placed on concentric circles C 1 , . . . , C k with common center c , and edges are drawn radially : every edge intersects every circle centered at c at most once. G is radial planar if it has a radial embedding, that is, a crossing-free radial drawing. If the vertices of G are ordered or partitioned into ordered levels (as they are for leveled graphs), we require that the assignment of vertices to circles corresponds to the given ordering or leveling. We show that a graph G is radial planar if G has a radial drawing in which every two edges cross an even number of times; the radial embedding has the same leveling as the radial drawing. In other words, we establish the weak variant of the Hanani-Tutte theorem for radial planarity. This generalizes a result by Pach and Toth

    Hanani-Tutte for Approximating Maps of Graphs

    We resolve in the affirmative conjectures of A. Skopenkov and Repovs (1998), and M. Skopenkov (2003) generalizing the classical Hanani-Tutte theorem to the setting of approximating maps of graphs on 2-dimensional surfaces by embeddings. Our proof of this result is constructive and almost immediately implies an efficient algorithm for testing whether a given piecewise linear map of a graph in a surface is approximable by an embedding. More precisely, an instance of this problem consists of (i) a graph G whose vertices are partitioned into clusters and whose inter-cluster edges are partitioned into bundles, and (ii) a region R of a 2-dimensional compact surface M given as the union of a set of pairwise disjoint discs corresponding to the clusters and a set of pairwise disjoint "pipes" corresponding to the bundles, connecting certain pairs of these discs. We are to decide whether G can be embedded inside M so that the vertices in every cluster are drawn in the corresponding disc, the edges in every bundle pass only through its corresponding pipe, and every edge crosses the boundary of each disc at most once

    Constrained Planarity in Practice -- Engineering the Synchronized Planarity Algorithm

    In the constrained planarity setting, we ask whether a graph admits a planar drawing that additionally satisfies a given set of constraints. These constraints are often derived from very natural problems; prominent examples are Level Planarity, where vertices have to lie on given horizontal lines indicating a hierarchy, and Clustered Planarity, where we additionally draw the boundaries of clusters which recursively group the vertices in a crossing-free manner. Despite receiving significant amount of attention and substantial theoretical progress on these problems, only very few of the found solutions have been put into practice and evaluated experimentally. In this paper, we describe our implementation of the recent quadratic-time algorithm by Bl\"asius et al. [TALG Vol 19, No 4] for solving the problem Synchronized Planarity, which can be seen as a common generalization of several constrained planarity problems, including the aforementioned ones. Our experimental evaluation on an existing benchmark set shows that even our baseline implementation outperforms all competitors by at least an order of magnitude. We systematically investigate the degrees of freedom in the implementation of the Synchronized Planarity algorithm for larger instances and propose several modifications that further improve the performance. Altogether, this allows us to solve instances with up to 100 vertices in milliseconds and instances with up to 100 000 vertices within a few minutes.Comment: to appear in Proceedings of ALENEX 202

    Ordered Level Planarity, Geodesic Planarity and Bi-Monotonicity

    We introduce and study the problem Ordered Level Planarity which asks for a planar drawing of a graph such that vertices are placed at prescribed positions in the plane and such that every edge is realized as a y-monotone curve. This can be interpreted as a variant of Level Planarity in which the vertices on each level appear in a prescribed total order. We establish a complexity dichotomy with respect to both the maximum degree and the level-width, that is, the maximum number of vertices that share a level. Our study of Ordered Level Planarity is motivated by connections to several other graph drawing problems. Geodesic Planarity asks for a planar drawing of a graph such that vertices are placed at prescribed positions in the plane and such that every edge is realized as a polygonal path composed of line segments with two adjacent directions from a given set SS of directions symmetric with respect to the origin. Our results on Ordered Level Planarity imply NPNP-hardness for any SS with ∣S∣≥4|S|\ge 4 even if the given graph is a matching. Katz, Krug, Rutter and Wolff claimed that for matchings Manhattan Geodesic Planarity, the case where SS contains precisely the horizontal and vertical directions, can be solved in polynomial time [GD'09]. Our results imply that this is incorrect unless P=NPP=NP. Our reduction extends to settle the complexity of the Bi-Monotonicity problem, which was proposed by Fulek, Pelsmajer, Schaefer and \v{S}tefankovi\v{c}. Ordered Level Planarity turns out to be a special case of T-Level Planarity, Clustered Level Planarity and Constrained Level Planarity. Thus, our results strengthen previous hardness results. In particular, our reduction to Clustered Level Planarity generates instances with only two non-trivial clusters.     Eliminating Higher-Multiplicity Intersections, II. The Deleted Product Criterion in the rr-Metastable Range

    Motivated by Tverberg-type problems in topological combinatorics and by classical results about embeddings (maps without double points), we study the question whether a finite simplicial complex K can be mapped into R^d without higher-multiplicity intersections. We focus on conditions for the existence of almost r-embeddings, i.e., maps from K to R^d without r-intersection points among any set of r pairwise disjoint simplices of K. Generalizing the classical Haefliger-Weber embeddability criterion, we show that a well-known necessary deleted product condition for the existence of almost r-embeddings is sufficient in a suitable r-metastable range of dimensions (r d > (r+1) dim K +2).
