    Design of an Unknown Input Observer to Enhance Driver Experience of Electric Power Steering Systems

    Electric power steering (EPS) systems assist the driver during manoeuvres by applying an additional steering torque generated by an electric motor. Although there are many advantages for electric actuated steering systems including fuel efficiency, they are known to deteriorate the feel of the steering as experienced by the driver. This paper presents a sliding mode observer based estimation concept which provides signals to evaluate and improve perception and feel of the steering as experienced by the driver. The proposed strategy is based on a physically motivated dynamic model of a power steering system and the measurements considered are typically available in any modern vehicle. The performance of the estimator is investigated using numerical simulation as well as experimental results obtained using a laboratory steering testbed

    Study of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor With LQG Controller and Observer On The Hydraulic Pump System

    In today's aircraft industry, the flight control system and landing gear system cannot be separated from the role of the hydraulic technology system. As the prime mover of the hydraulic pump or actuator hydraulic system, a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is used. This PMSM is a substitute for the role of conventional combustion engines, and PMSM is considered to have several advantages in increasing performance and efficiency. This research will develop a system to find parameter values for Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controllers in a hydraulic pump system that is installed as a load from PMSM and then observe and analyze the performance of the response of the synchronous motor system, namely in the form of changes in rotor rotation speed, torque electric power, and stator current on the q-axis. The results of the research on the characteristics of the PMSM implemented in the hydraulic pump system show that the LQG controller is more optimal when compared to the observer controller. The LQG controller is known to have a faster transient response, which is indicated by the value of the settling time improvement at no load, namely 116.67% for the observer controller and 364.705% without the controller. Then when the synchronous motor serves the nominal load, the rotational speed of the rotor produced in the steady state becomes 8.29% faster than the observer controller and 74.49% without the controller. This rotor's rotational speed affects the time the actuator needs to extend and retract motion

    This volume contains a delineation of fundamental and mechanization-specific flight control characteristics and problems gleaned from many sources and spanning a period of over two decades. It is organized to present and discuss first some fundamental, generic problems of closed-loop flight control systems involving numerator characteristics (quadratic dipoles, non-minimum phase roots, and intentionally introduced zeros). Next the principal elements of the largely mechanical primary flight control system are reviewed with particular emphasis on the influence of nonlinearities. The characteristics and problems of augmentation (damping, stability, and feel) system mechanizations are then dealt with. The particular idiosyncracies of automatic control actuation and command augmentation schemes are stressed, because they constitute the major interfaces with the primary flight control system and an often highly variable vehicle response

    A study of stone fragmentation in shock wave lithotripsy by customizing the acoustic field and waveform shape

    Shock wave lithotripsy is the preferred treatment modality for kidney stones in the United States. Despite clinical use for over twenty-five years, the mechanisms of stone fragmentation are still under debate. A piezoelectric array was employed to examine the effect of waveform shape and pressure distribution on stone fragmentation in lithotripsy. The array consisted of 170 elements placed on the inner surface of a 15 cm-radius spherical cap. Each element was driven independently using a 170 individual pulsers, each capable of generating 1.2 kV. The acoustic field was characterized using a fiber optic probe hydrophone with a bandwidth of 30 MHz and a spatial resolution of 100 μm. When all elements were driven simultaneously, the focal waveform was a shock wave with peak pressures p+ =65±3MPa and p−=−16±2MPa and the −6 dB focal region was 13 mm long and 2 mm wide. The delay for each element was the only control parameter for customizing the acoustic field and waveform shape, which was done with the aim of investigating the hypothesized mechanisms of stone fragmentation such as spallation, shear, squeezing, and cavitation. The acoustic field customization was achieved by employing the angular spectrum approach for modeling the forward wave propagation and regression of least square errors to determine the optimal set of delays. Results from the acoustic field customization routine and its implications on stone fragmentation will be discussed.National Institutes of Health DK04388

    Modelling of an electro-hydraulic actutor using extended adaptive distance gap statistic approach

    The existence of high degree of non-linearity in Electro-Hydraulic Actuator (EHA) system has imposed a challenging task in developing its model so that effective control algorithm can be proposed. In general, there are two modelling approaches available for EHA system, which are the dynamic equation modelling method and the system identification modelling method. Both approaches have disadvantages, where the dynamic equation modelling is hard to apply and some parameters are difficult to obtain, while the system identification method is less accurate when the system’s nature is complicated with wide variety of parameters, nonlinearity and uncertainties. This thesis presents a new modelling procedure of an EHA system by using fuzzy approach. Two sets of input variables are obtained, where the first set of variables are selected based on mathematical modelling of the EHA system. The reduction of input dimension is done by the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method for the second set of input variables. A new gap statistic with a new within-cluster dispersion calculation is proposed by introducing an adaptive distance norm in distance calculation. The new gap statistic applies Gustafson Kessel (GK) clustering algorithm to obtain the optimal number of cluster of each input. GK clustering algorithm also provides the location and characteristic of every cluster detected. The information of input variables, number of clusters, cluster’s locations and characteristics, and fuzzy rules are used to generate initial Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) with Takagi-Sugeno type. The initial FIS is trained using Adaptive Network Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) hybrid training algorithm with an identification data set. The ANFIS EHA model and ANFIS PCA model obtained using proposed modelling procedure, have shown the ability to accurately estimate EHA system’s performance at 99.58% and 99.11% best fitting accuracy compared to conventional linear Autoregressive with External Input (ARX) model at 94.97%. The models validation result on different data sets also suggests high accuracy in ANFIS EHA and ANFIS PCA model compared to ARX model
