    .NET as a Teaching Tool: Working Paper Series--03-06

    In the introductory business programming courses, the BASIC programming language was used for many years followed by Visual Basic more recently. In the intermediate and advanced business programming courses COBOL has been the language used for decades, but it has been replaced by Java more recently. This has come with the benefit of the use of objects, but has also come with the costs of a more awkward Graphical User Interface, and more cumbersome data file management than with COBOL. The use of .NET as a teaching tool solves this problem. The shift from VB to VB.NET in the introductory programming courses is a natural one, and the use of C# in the intermediate programming courses addresses the unwieldy nature of data file management in Java, but retains the benefits of object-orientation. The Graphical User Interface available in Visual Basic is retained in VB.NET, which is available for all languages used within .NET, including C#. The .NET development environment offers a seamless development environment for both introductory and intermediate programming courses

    Enterprise Resource Planning Systems and Their Impact on Development and Training: A Study of Instructional Methods in North America

    One of the most important issues facing the modern world today is the Year 2000 problem. One of the greatest impacts of this problem is experienced by legacy computer systems. These are the database systems that run our businesses. Legacy systems are operated by segregated software packages that may or may not be able to communicate to each other. With the globalization of the economy, business computer systems need to be able to communicate with each other. This type of situation is what enterprise resource planning software is designed to solve. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems provide a common, consistent system to capture data organization-wide without redundancies. ERP is defined as a software management system that integrates all facets of the business, including planning, manufacturing, sales, and marketing. In addition to integrating the information across functions, also provides a set of tools for planning and monitoring the organizational functions and ensuring progress towards a common organizational goal (Sudhakar, 1998). As ERP methodology has become more popular, software applications have emerged to help business managers implement ERP. The purpose of this pilot study is to identify development times and delivery methods for high-level computer technology training. This has become an issue for Human Resource Development (HRD) because of the Year 2000 situation and its resulting issues, which have compelled businesses around North America to implement these ERP systems. After circulating a survey for almost seven month, the data collection period ended in March 1999. The response rate of 47 returned surveys from 63 requests calculates to 74.6%. A total of 34, or 72%, of respondents developed training programs for high-level computer technology

    Several types of types in programming languages

    Types are an important part of any modern programming language, but we often forget that the concept of type we understand nowadays is not the same it was perceived in the sixties. Moreover, we conflate the concept of "type" in programming languages with the concept of the same name in mathematical logic, an identification that is only the result of the convergence of two different paths, which started apart with different aims. The paper will present several remarks (some historical, some of more conceptual character) on the subject, as a basis for a further investigation. The thesis we will argue is that there are three different characters at play in programming languages, all of them now called types: the technical concept used in language design to guide implementation; the general abstraction mechanism used as a modelling tool; the classifying tool inherited from mathematical logic. We will suggest three possible dates ad quem for their presence in the programming language literature, suggesting that the emergence of the concept of type in computer science is relatively independent from the logical tradition, until the Curry-Howard isomorphism will make an explicit bridge between them.Comment: History and Philosophy of Computing, HAPOC 2015.     The Evolution of the Customer-Centric Helpdesk: Two Case Studies

    This article examines how the helpdesk function has changed over the past three decades through examination of two case studies. In 1985, the European shipment of PC workstations overtook shipments of simple terminals (i.e., video display units and keyboards, with very little processing power), instigating a revolution in end-user computing, with computer users taking advantage of new word-processor, spreadsheet, graphics, email and database applications. This article looks at two snapshots of end-user computing and helpdesk operations separated by a 30 year period – one at Glaxo Pharmaceuticals in 1988, and the other at the University of Gloucestershire in 2018. This case study research finds that whilst the range of technologies requiring support has increased markedly, this has been counter-balanced somewhat by the emergence of standards and dominant products in many technology categories. It also finds that the concept of support and the role of the end-user have evolved significantly in a rapidly changing technology landscape
