    Negli ultimi decenni, la conoscenza è diventato un fattore determinante per la crescita economica e la competitività. In questo contesto, gli Istituti di Istruzione Superiore, in quanto fonti di nuova conoscenza, hanno gradualmente ridisegnato le loro attività, passando da ruoli più tradizionali (insegnamento e ricerca) a un approccio più imprenditoriale e proattivo, comunemente identificato come terza missione (TM). La creazione di connessioni con il mondo delle imprese rappresenta uno dei mezzi più utili per le università per realizzare gli obiettivi della TM. Inoltre, lo sviluppo del modello della tripla elica e la sua evoluzione verso la quarta elica, e dunque il coinvolgimento anche della comunità locale, ha riformulato l’impegno delle università nella società civile e nel contesto economico. All'interno di questo processo, le università possono agire come mezzi di co-creazione a diversi libelli e sostenere l'innovazione e il raggiungimento dello sviluppo sostenibile, contribuendo all'aumento di conoscenze pratiche e transdisciplinari. Le collaborazioni tra gli attori della tripla e quadrupla elica possono assumere varie forme - come, ad esempio, university-business collaboration, university-industry linkages, university-industry-government interactions, Community-Academic Partnerships. Tutte queste forme di collaborazione possono essere include nel quadro delle public-private partnerships, che prevedono la condivisione di conoscenze, competenze, capitali e altre risorse in grado di innescare processi interattivi e affrontare politiche, progetti e questioni di servizio pubblico attraverso lo sviluppo congiunto. Queste collaborazioni potrebbero giocare un ruolo cruciale nel promuovere lo sviluppo locale nelle aree svantaggiate. Le aree svantaggiate, da un lato mostrano una fragilità legata a condizioni specifiche; dall'altro rappresentano bacini significativi di risorse non sfruttate, che potrebbero costituire un potenziale di sviluppo economico, sociale e culturale. In questo contesto, una collaborazione tra imprese e organizzazioni della conoscenza può aiutare i territori ad affrontare le esigenze della globalizzazione, a valorizzare i punti di forza culturali e sociali di un luogo e a facilitare il dialogo tra le imprese locali. In questo campo, le opportunità per le aree svantaggiate potrebbero anche riguardare il turismo. Considerando queste premesse, questo studio ha un duplice obiettivo. Innanzitutto, è un tentativo di analizzare i driver e le barriere alle collaborazioni tra gli attori della quadrupla elica rivolte allo sviluppo locale ed esplorare le sue potenzialità nello stimolare e implementare iniziative di turismo esperienziale e relazionale in aree svantaggiate, con un focus specifico sulle aree montane e alto-collinari della Regione Marche (Italia). Infatti, il turismo culturale e agroalimentare di tipo “community-based”, attraverso l'implementazione di collaborazioni tra diversi attori, può rendere le aree interne delle Marche una destinazione adatta ad esperienze immersive, relazionali e di apprendimento. In secondo luogo, lo studio mira a comprendere il ruolo potenziale delle ICT nell'innescare e sostenere questi processi. Partendo da questa ipotesi, il presente lavoro cerca di rispondere alle seguenti domande di ricerca: (1) Quale ruolo possono giocare le collaborazioni a quadrupla elica nella promozione del turismo esperienziale e relazionale nelle aree svantaggiate delle Marche? (2) Quale ruolo possono giocare le ICT nella promozione del turismo esperienziale e relazionale nelle aree svantaggiate delle Marche? Lo studio è diviso in tre sezioni. La prima parte si concentra sui driver, le barriere e le principali implicazioni delle collaborazioni università-imprese nelle aree svantaggiate. A tale scopo, il primo capitolo propone una ricognizione ragionata della letteratura su questi argomenti. I risultati della review sono stati applicati a due casi di collaborazione volti a promuovere iniziative di turismo esperienziale e relazionale in aree rurali delle Marche. La seconda parte analizza le potenzialità delle collaborazioni di quadrupla elica e delle ICT per promuovere il turismo esperienziale in un'area rurale. A questo scopo viene analizzato il caso del progetto Smart Marca, un esempio di public-private partnership, che ha coinvolto diversi attori attraverso processi partecipativi nella creazione di un'applicazione mobile per smartphone finalizzata a promuovere il Fermano come destinazione culturale e agroalimentare. La terza parte considera le potenzialità delle collaborazioni a quadrupla elica per favorire il turismo relazionale. In questa sezione viene presentato il caso di Agritur-Aso, un'associazione locale che opera in un'area rurale e composta da 22 strutture ricettive rurali e aziende agricole che offrono ospitalità attraverso la combinazione di attività di turismo esperienziale, relazionale e comunitario. Per quanto riguarda la metodologia, sono stati scelti sia approcci quantitativi che qualitativi. Il technology acceptance model è stato utilizzato come modello per un’indagine condotta su un campione di 128 studenti universitari per esplorare la predisposizione degli utenti ad adottare le app mobili per il turismo e visitare una destinazione (capitolo 3). Per quanto riguarda il caso Agritur-Aso è stato condotto un questionario con i partecipanti all'iniziativa Staffetta della cucina Ciocheciò, con l'obiettivo di esaminare il ruolo giocato dalla tecnologia, dalla componente locale e dalle tradizioni gastronomiche nel mantenere le relazioni esistenti e crearne di nuove all'interno di un sistema di offerta turistica relazionale (capitolo 5). Sono state condotte interviste semi-strutturate con il presidente dell'associazione Agritur-Aso (capitolo 4) e con gli organizzatori della Staffetta (capitolo 5). Inoltre, è stato organizzato un focus group con gli studenti internazionali che hanno partecipato alle iniziative di Agritur-Aso (capitolo 4). Nel capitolo 4, per ottenere una comprensione approfondita delle potenzialità di collaborazione tra l'università, una rete di imprese e i membri della comunità, sono stati applicati anche i metodi della Participatory Action Research (PAR). Lo studio dimostra che le università possono dare un contributo alla sistematizzazione dell'offerta di servizi e prodotti turistici tematici nelle aree svantaggiate, collaborando alla progettazione di un piano strategico che coinvolga tutti gli attori della QH, facilitando l'emergere di bisogni e la condivisione di idee, oltre a sostenere progetti comuni. Infatti, sia il caso Smart Marca che quello Agritur-Aso hanno dimostrato che la cooperazione tra tutti gli attori della quadrupla elica può favorire lo sviluppo economico delle aree svantaggiate, in quanto permette la condivisione e la messa in rete di risorse che non sarebbero disponibili ai singoli attori, stimola le relazioni, aumenta il capitale di conoscenza e permette la creazione di un sistema di offerta integrato, in grado di promuovere le aree svantaggiate come destinazioni appetibili, che forniscono esperienze coinvolgenti a stretto contatto con la comunità locale. Per quanto riguarda la seconda domanda di ricerca, entrambi i casi hanno dimostrato che le ICT possono giocare un ruolo cruciale nella promozione del turismo esperienziale e relazionale nelle aree svantaggiate. Il caso Smart Marca (capitolo 3) ha evidenziato che le app di viaggio possono creare e fornire esperienze immersive anche se a distanza. Il caso della Staffetta (capitolo 5) ha riconosciuto un ruolo essenziale alle tecnologie, poiché senza il format online e l'uso dei social media, l'iniziativa non avrebbe avuto luogo. Tuttavia, entrambi i casi assegnano alle ICT un ruolo strumentale nel contesto dell'esperienza turistica: lungi dall'essere un sostituto della realtà, la tecnologia può fungere da ponte per facilitare le interazioni faccia a faccia e stimolare visite reali a luoghi conosciuti solo virtualmente. Questo lavoro presenta alcuni limiti. Ulteriori ricerche dovrebbero fornire una panoramica sistematica sull'offerta turistica regionale nelle aree svantaggiate, concentrandosi sugli attuali flussi turistici, sulla domanda di turismo esperienziale e relazionale in questa porzione di regione e sull'impatto economico dell'attuale offerta turistica. Inoltre, potrebbe essere effettuata un'analisi accurata dell'impatto delle collaborazioni di quadrupla elica nello sviluppo economico e turistico delle aree svantaggiate delle Marche attraverso una ricerca sia desk che field e mediante il coinvolgimento di tutti gli attori della quadrupla elica di un processo di participatory action research

    Programming teaching is a key factor for technological evolution. The efficient way to learn to program is by programming and hard training and thus feedback is a crucial factor in the success and flow of the process. This work aims to analyse the potential use of VPL in the teaching process of programming in higher education. It also intends to verify whether, with VPL, it is possible to make students learning more effective and autonomous, with a reduction in the volume of assessment work by teachers. Experiments were carried out with the VPL, in the practical-laboratory classes of a curricular unit of initiation to programming in a higher education institution. The results supported by the responses to surveys, point to the validity of the model

    Socio-technical analysis and design of digital workplaces to foster employee health

    Recent socio-technical developments caused by ongoing digitalization (e.g., robotic process automation, artificial intelligence, anthropomorphic systems) or the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., an increasing number of remote working employees and hence, increasing number of virtual collaboration) change the work environment and culture. Digital and smart workplace technol-ogies facilitate business processes and provide tools for efficient communication and (virtual) collaboration, “increasing the productivity of the workforce in the information age” (Attaran et al. 2019, p. 1). Especially in times of the COVID-19 pandemic, digital technologies play a crucial role in keeping us socially close, connected, and collaborative while increasing the phys-ical distance between humans. However, this development affects the health of employees (Tarafdar et al. 2013). In research, for example, it has long been known that the increased usage of digital technologies and media (DTM) may cause stress, leading to potentially harmful reac-tions in individuals. Research has noted this specific form of stress as technostress (Ayyagari et al. 2011; Tarafdar et al. 2007; Tarafdar et al. 2011; Tarafdar et al. 2019), which is an umbrella term for causes, negative organizational outcomes, and negative humanistic outcomes resulting from the use of DTM at work. The simultaneous consideration of humanistic (e.g., well-being, equality) and organizational outcomes (e.g., efficiency, productivity) is an integral part of a socio-technical system (Beath et al. 2013; Mumford 2006), which is at the core of the IS discipline (Bostrom et al. 2009; Chiasson and Davidson 2005). However, a review from Sarker et al. (2019) regarding published research articles in one of the top journals within the IS community revealed that most reviewed studies (91%) had focused exclusively on instrumental goals. They conclude that “many IS researchers have forgotten or ignored the premise that technologies need to benefit humankind overall (Majchrzak et al. 2016), not just their economic condition” (Sarker et al. 2019, p. 705). Especially as humanistic outcomes can lead to even more positive instrumental outcomes. Hence, Sarker et al. (2019) call for focusing on the connection between humanistic and instru-mental outcomes, enabling a positive synergy resulting from this interplay. For this reason, this dissertation adopts a socio-technical perspective. It aims to conduct re-search that links instrumental outcomes with humanistic objectives to ultimately achieve a healthier use of DTMs at the digital workplace. It is important to note that the socio-technical perspective considers both the technical component and the social component privileging nei-ther one of them and sees outcomes resulting from the reciprocal interaction between those two.Therefore, the dissertation focuses on the interaction while applying pluralistic methodological approaches from qualitative (e.g., semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions) and quantitative research (e.g., collection from a field study or survey research). It provides a theo-retical contribution applying both behavioral research (i.e., analysis of cause-and-effect rela-tionships) and design-oriented research (i.e., instructions for designing socio-technical information systems). Overall, this work addresses four different areas within the reciprocal interaction between the social and technical components: the role of the technical component, the role of the social component, DTMs fostering a fit between the technical and social compo-nents, and the imminent misfit between these two due to ongoing digitalization. First, to contribute to an understanding of the technical component’s role, this thesis presents new knowledge on the characteristics and features of DTM and their influence on employee health and productivity. Research on the design of digital workplaces examined different design approaches, in which information exchange and sharing documents or project support were regarded (Williams and Schubert 2018). However, the characteristics of DTM also play an es-sential role in the emergence of technostress (Dardas and Ahmad 2015). This thesis presents ten characteristics of DTM that affect technostress at an individual’s workplace, including a measurement scale and analysis on how these characteristics affect technostress. Besides, also, the provision of functional features by DTMs can affect instrumental outcomes or humanistic objectives. For example, affording users with certain kinds of autonomy regarding the config-uration of DTM while they work towards their goals could have a tremendous effect on pursu-ing goals and well-being (Patall et al. 2008; Ryan and Deci 2000). Therefore, this thesis presents knowledge regarding the design of DTM on the benefits of affording users with autonomy. Furthermore, it shows that merely affording more autonomy can have positive effects above and beyond the positive effects of the actualization of affordance. Second, to contribute to an understanding of the social component’s role, this thesis presents new knowledge on contextual and individual factors of social circumstances and their influence on employee health and productivity. In this context, the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the intensity of technostress among employees is considered, as work became more digital almost overnight. Therefore, this thesis provides empirical insights into digital work and its context in times of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on employees’ well-being, health, and productivity. Furthermore, measures to steer the identified effects if the situation in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic persists or comparable disruptive situations should re-occur are discussed. On the other hand, this research takes a closer look at the effect of an individual preference regarding coping styles in dealing with upcoming technostress. A distinction is made between the effects of two different coping styles, namely active-functional and dysfunctional, on strain as a humanistic outcome and productivity as an instrumental outcome. In the course of this, evidence is provided that coping moderates the relationship between the misfit within the socio-technical system and strain as proposed by the psychological theory of job demands-resources model (Demerouti et al. 2001). Third, to contribute to a successful fit between the technical and social components, this thesis presents frameworks and guidelines on the design of DTM, which understand the social com-ponent (here the user and her/his environment) and adjust accordingly to the needs of their users. Therefore, the thesis provides knowledge on the design of DTMs that support users in applying stress management techniques and build the foundation for stress-sensitive systems (i.e., systems that aim to mitigate stress by applying intervention measures on the social and technical component (Adam et al. 2017)). As a matter of fact, a framework for collecting and storing data (e.g., on the user and her/his environment) is developed and experiences with im-plementing a prototype for life-integrated stress assessment are reported. The experiences from this and the existing knowledge in the literature will finally be aggregated to a mid-range design theory for mobile stress assessment. To contribute to the fourth and last aspect, the imminent misfit within the socio-technical sys-tem due to ongoing digitalization, this thesis presents new knowledge regarding digital work demands that potentially affect both employees’ health and instrumental outcomes. The current version of technostress’s theoretical foundation was introduced more than ten years ago by Tarafdar et al. (2007). However, the interaction with and use of DTM has considerably changed along with the societal and individual expectations. Therefore, this thesis puts the current con-cept of technostress to test. As a result, a new theory of digital stress, as an extension of the concept of technostress, is proposed with twelve dimensions – instead of five dimensions within the concept of Tarafdar et al. (2007) – that could be hierarchically structured in four higher-order factors. This theory holistically addresses the current challenges that employees have to deal with digitalization. To sum up, this dissertation contributes to the IS community’s knowledge base by providing knowledge regarding the interaction between employees and their digital workplace to foster the achievement of humanistic and instrumental outcomes. It provides both behavioral research and design-oriented research while using pluralistic methodological approaches. For this pur-pose, this thesis presents knowledge about the different components within the socio-technical system, design knowledge on DTMs fostering the fit between these components, and an under-standing of an upcoming misfit due to the ongoing digitalization. Overall, this research aims to support the successful change towards a healthy digital workplace in the face of digitalization
