Functional Bipartite Ranking: a Wavelet-Based Filtering Approach
It is the main goal of this article to address the bipartite ranking issue
from the perspective of functional data analysis (FDA). Given a training set of
independent realizations of a (possibly sampled) second-order random function
with a (locally) smooth autocorrelation structure and to which a binary label
is randomly assigned, the objective is to learn a scoring function s with
optimal ROC curve. Based on linear/nonlinear wavelet-based approximations, it
is shown how to select compact finite dimensional representations of the input
curves adaptively, in order to build accurate ranking rules, using recent
advances in the ranking problem for multivariate data with binary feedback.
Beyond theoretical considerations, the performance of the learning methods for
functional bipartite ranking proposed in this paper are illustrated by
numerical experiments
Unsupervised Visual and Textual Information Fusion in Multimedia Retrieval - A Graph-based Point of View
Multimedia collections are more than ever growing in size and diversity.
Effective multimedia retrieval systems are thus critical to access these
datasets from the end-user perspective and in a scalable way. We are interested
in repositories of image/text multimedia objects and we study multimodal
information fusion techniques in the context of content based multimedia
information retrieval. We focus on graph based methods which have proven to
provide state-of-the-art performances. We particularly examine two of such
methods : cross-media similarities and random walk based scores. From a
theoretical viewpoint, we propose a unifying graph based framework which
encompasses the two aforementioned approaches. Our proposal allows us to
highlight the core features one should consider when using a graph based
technique for the combination of visual and textual information. We compare
cross-media and random walk based results using three different real-world
datasets. From a practical standpoint, our extended empirical analysis allow us
to provide insights and guidelines about the use of graph based methods for
multimodal information fusion in content based multimedia information
retrieval.Comment: An extended version of the paper: Visual and Textual Information

Query by String word spotting based on character bi-gram indexing
In this paper we propose a segmentation-free query by string word spotting
method. Both the documents and query strings are encoded using a recently
proposed word representa- tion that projects images and strings into a common
atribute space based on a pyramidal histogram of characters(PHOC). These
attribute models are learned using linear SVMs over the Fisher Vector
representation of the images along with the PHOC labels of the corresponding
strings. In order to search through the whole page, document regions are
indexed per character bi- gram using a similar attribute representation. On top
of that, we propose an integral image representation of the document using a
simplified version of the attribute model for efficient computation. Finally we
introduce a re-ranking step in order to boost retrieval performance. We show
state-of-the-art results for segmentation-free query by string word spotting in
single-writer and multi-writer standard datasetsComment: To be published in ICDAR201
A new and efficient intelligent collaboration scheme for fashion design
Technology-mediated collaboration process has been extensively studied for over a decade. Most applications with collaboration concepts reported in the literature focus on enhancing efficiency and effectiveness of the decision-making processes in objective and well-structured workflows. However, relatively few previous studies have investigated the applications of collaboration schemes to problems with subjective and unstructured nature. In this paper, we explore a new intelligent collaboration scheme for fashion design which, by nature, relies heavily on human judgment and creativity. Techniques such as multicriteria decision making, fuzzy logic, and artificial neural network (ANN) models are employed. Industrial data sets are used for the analysis. Our experimental results suggest that the proposed scheme exhibits significant improvement over the traditional method in terms of the timeâcost effectiveness, and a company interview with design professionals has confirmed its effectiveness and significance
