    Effective Node Clustering and Data Dissemination In Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Networks

    The denseness and random distribution of large-scale WSNs makes it quite difficult to replace or recharge nodes. Energy efficiency and management is a major design goal in these networks. In addition, reliability and scalability are two other major goals that have been identified by researchers as necessary in order to further expand the deployment of such networks for their use in various applications. This thesis aims to provide an energy efficient and effective node clustering and data dissemination algorithm in large-scale wireless sensor networks. In the area of clustering, the proposed research prolongs the lifetime of the network by saving energy through the use of node ranking to elect cluster heads, contrary to other existing cluster-based work that selects a random node or the node with the highest energy at a particular time instance as the new cluster head. Moreover, a global knowledge strategy is used to maintain a level of universal awareness of existing nodes in the subject area and to avoid the problem of disconnected or forgotten nodes. In the area of data dissemination, the aim of this research is to effectively manage the data collection by developing an efficient data collection scheme using a ferry node and applying a selective duty cycle strategy to the sensor nodes. Depending on the application, mobile ferries can be used for collecting data in a WSN, especially those that are large in scale, with delay tolerant applications. Unlike data collection via multi-hop forwarding among the sensing nodes, ferries travel across the sensing field to collect data. A ferry-based approach thus eliminates, or minimizes, the need for the multi-hop forwarding of data, and as a result, energy consumption at the nodes will be significantly reduced. This is especially true for nodes that are near the base station as they are used by other nodes to forward data to the base station.     Enabling Multi-Mission Interoperable UAS Using Data-Centric Communications

    We claim the strong potential of data-centric communications in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), as a suitable paradigm to enhance collaborative operations via efficient information sharing, as well as to build systems supporting flexible mission objectives. In particular, this paper analyzes the primary contributions to data dissemination in UAS that can be given by the Data Distribution Service (DDS) open standard, as a solid and industry-mature data-centric technology. Our study is not restricted to traditional UAS where a set of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) transmit data to the ground station that controls them. Instead, we contemplate flexible UAS deployments with multiple UAV units of different sizes and capacities, which are interconnected to form an aerial communication network, enabling the provision of value-added services over a delimited geographical area. In addition, the paper outlines an approach to address the issues inherent to the utilization of network-level multicast, a baseline technology in DDS, in the considered UAS deployments. We complete our analysis with a practical experience aiming at validating the feasibility and the advantages of using DDS in a multi-UAV deployment scenario. For this purpose, we use a UAS testbed built up by heterogeneous hardware equipment, including a number of interconnected micro aerial vehicles, carrying single board computers as payload, as well as real equipment from a tactical UAS from the Spanish Ministry of Defense.This article was partially supported by the European H2020 5GRANGE project (grant agreement 777137), and by the 5GCity project (TEC2016-76795-C6-3-R) funded by the SpanishMinistry of Economy and Competitiveness

    Cooperation as a Service in VANET: Implementation and Simulation Results

    The past decade has witnessed the emergence of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET), specializing from the well-known Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) to Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) wireless communications. While the original motivation for Vehicular Networks was to promote traffic safety, recently it has become increasingly obvious that Vehicular Networks open new vistas for Internet access, providing weather or road condition, parking availability, distributed gaming, and advertisement. In previous papers [27,28], we introduced Cooperation as a Service (CaaS); a new service-oriented solution which enables improved and new services for the road users and an optimized use of the road network through vehicle\u27s cooperation and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The current paper is an extension of the first ones; it describes an improved version of CaaS and provides its full implementation details and simulation results. CaaS structures the network into clusters, and uses Content Based Routing (CBR) for intra-cluster communications and DTN (Delay and disruption-Tolerant Network) routing for inter-cluster communications. To show the feasibility of our approach, we implemented and tested CaaS using Opnet modeler software package. Simulation results prove the correctness of our protocol and indicate that CaaS achieves higher performance as compared to an Epidemic approach

    Cognitive Radio Network with a distributed control channel and quality-of-service solution

    The proliferation of wireless access and applications to the Internet and the advent of a myriad of highly evolved portable communication devices; creates the need for an efficiently utilized radio spectrum. This is paramount in the licensed and unlicensed radio frequency bands, that spawn an exponential growth in Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) research, Cognitive Radio (CR) and Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN) research. DSA research has given way to the paradigm shift toward CR with its dynamic changes in transmission schemas. This paradigm shift from a fixed and centralized frequency spectrum environment has morphed into a dynamic and decentralized one. CR provides wireless nodes the capability to adapt and exploit the frequency spectrum. The spectrum information obtained is scanned and updated to determine the channel quality for viability and a utilization/availability by the licensed (primary) user. To take advantage of the CR capabilities, previous research has focused on a Common Control Channel(CCC) for the control signals to be used for spectrum control. This utilization generates channel saturation, extreme transmission overhead of control information, and a point of vulnerability. The traditional designs for wireless routing protocols do not support an ad hoc multi-hop cognitive radio network model. This research focuses on a real world implementation of a heterogeneous ad hoc multi-hop Cognitive Radio Network. An overall model, coined Emerald, has been designed to address the architecture; the Medium Access Control layer, E-MAC; and the network layer, E-NET. First, a Medium Access Control(MAC) layer protocol is provided to avoid the pitfalls of a common control channel. This new design provides CRNs with network topology and channel utilization information. Spectrum etiquette, in turn, addresses channel saturation, control overhead, and the single point of vulnerability. Secondly, a routing model is proposed that will address the efficiency of an ad hoc multi-hop CRN with a focus on the Quality-of-Service(QoS) of the point-to-point as well as end-to-end communication. This research has documented weaknesses in spectrum utilization; it has been expanded to accommodate a distributed control environment. Subsets of the model will be validated through Network Simulator-2(NS/2) and MatLab© simulations to determine point-to-point and end-to-end communications

    Architecture of low duty-cycle mechanisms

    We describe the principles of low duty WSN architectures and we summarize the main WSN asynchronous MAC low duty-cycle schemes found in the literature. They are mainly two schemes, the first technique is sender-oriented and the second technique is receiver oriented. We explain how MAC low duty-cycle schemes and opportunistic routing algorithms can be combined in cross-layer approach. We propose two low duty WSN architectures: one is based on B-MAC (Sender-oriented), the second on RI-MAC (Receiver-oriented). We depict several variants for each cross-layer scheme. Depending on the transmission range, we evaluate the average i) packet delivery probability, ii) delay at each hop, iii) number of hops to reach the sink and iv) end-to-end delivery delay. We compare the simulation results, for each scheme, with those obtained by a simple analytical model using a Poisson point process. We study the energy consumed when no event is detected and the additional energy to convey a packet to the sink. We show that the gain in energy obtained with a low duty-cycle is very significant

    Data Collection Protocols For Wireless Sensor Networks

    Data collection in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has a significant impact on the network’s performance and lifetime. Recently, several data collection techniques that use mobile elements (MEs) have been recommended, especially techniques that focus on maximising data delivery. However, energy consumption and the time required for data collection are significant for many WSN applications, particularly real-time systems. In this paper, a review of data collection techniques is presented, providing a comparison between the maximum amount shortest path (MASP) and zone-based energy-aware (ZEAL) data collection protocols implemented in the NS-3 simulator. Finally, the study provides a suitable data collection strategy that satisfies the requirements of WSN applications in terms of data delivery, energy consumption, and the time required for data collection
