    Mobile transporter path planning

    The use of a genetic algorithm (GA) for solving the mobile transporter path planning problem is investigated. The mobile transporter is a traveling robotic vehicle proposed for the space station which must be able to reach any point of the structure autonomously. Elements of the genetic algorithm are explored in both a theoretical and experimental sense. Specifically, double crossover, greedy crossover, and tournament selection techniques are examined. Additionally, the use of local optimization techniques working in concert with the GA are also explored. Recent developments in genetic algorithm theory are shown to be particularly effective in a path planning problem domain, though problem areas can be cited which require more research

    A hybrid genetic algorithm for solving a layout problem in the fashion industry.

    As of this writing, many success stories exist yet of powerful genetic algorithms (GAs) in the field of constraint optimisation. In this paper, a hybrid, intelligent genetic algorithm will be developed for solving a cutting layout problem in the Belgian fashion industry. In an initial section, an existing LP formulation of the cutting problem is briefly summarised and is used in further paragraphs as the core design of our GA. Through an initial attempt of rendering the algorithm as universal as possible, it was conceived a threefold genetic enhancement had to be carried out that reduces the size of the active solution space. The GA is therefore rebuilt using intelligent genetic operators, carrying out a local optimisation and applying a heuristic feasibility operator. Powerful computational results are achieved for a variety of problem cases that outperform any existing LP model yet developed.Fashion; Industry;

    Optical packet switching over arbitrary physical topologies using the Manhattan street network : an evolutionary approach

Optical packet switching over arbitrary physical topologies typically mandates complex routing schemes and the use of buffers to resolve the likely contentions. However, the relatively immature nature of optical logic devices and the limitations with optical buffering provide significant incentive to reduce the routing complexity and avoid optical domain contentions. This paper examines how the Manhattan Street Network (MSN) and a particular routing scheme may be used to facilitate optical packet switching over arbitrary physical topologies. A novel approach, genetic algorithms (GA), is applied to the problem of deploying the MSN (near) optimally in arbitrary physical topologies. A problem encoding is proposed and different implementations of GA described. The optimum GA parameters are empirically selected and GA is successfully used to deploy the MSN in physical topologies of up to 100 nodes. Favourable results are obtained. GA are also seen to out-perform other heuristics at deploying the MSN in arbitrary physical topologies for optical packet switching

    The Dynamics of a Genetic Algorithm for a Simple Learning Problem

    A formalism for describing the dynamics of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) using methods from statistical mechanics is applied to the problem of generalization in a perceptron with binary weights. The dynamics are solved for the case where a new batch of training patterns is presented to each population member each generation, which considerably simplifies the calculation. The theory is shown to agree closely to simulations of a real GA averaged over many runs, accurately predicting the mean best solution found. For weak selection and large problem size the difference equations describing the dynamics can be expressed analytically and we find that the effects of noise due to the finite size of each training batch can be removed by increasing the population size appropriately. If this population resizing is used, one can deduce the most computationally efficient size of training batch each generation. For independent patterns this choice also gives the minimum total number of training patterns used. Although using independent patterns is a very inefficient use of training patterns in general, this work may also prove useful for determining the optimum batch size in the case where patterns are recycled.Comment: 28 pages, 4 Postscript figures.     Use of genetic algorithm as a solution of unidimensional cutting rationalization problem

    The following research is dedicated to studying an example of a solution of unidimension cutting rationalization problem. The possibility to use the elements of GA (genetic algorithm) theory at its determination is shown. The specific of the following problem is that in the process of solution search the number of frontages and cutting details is steady, but their order is variable. The modifications of the classical genetic algorithm allowed us to develop a new algorithm of solution search. The results of the solution were used to create a DLL-library, which is easily integrated in different kinds of application software

    Modelling Genetic Algorithms and Evolving Populations

    A formalism for modelling the dynamics of genetic algorithms using methods from statistical physics, originally due to Pr¨ugel-Bennett and Shapiro, is extended to ranking selection, a form of selection commonly used in the genetic algorithm community. The extension allows a reduction in the number of macroscopic variables required to model the mean behaviour of the genetic algorithm. This reduction allows a more qualitative understanding of the dynamics to be developed without sacrificing quantitative accuracy. The work is extended beyond modelling the dynamics of the genetic algorithm. A caricature of an optimisation problem with many local minima is considered — the basin with a barrier problem. The first passage time — the time required to escape the local minima to the global minimum — is calculated and insights gained as to how the genetic algorithm is searching the landscape. The interaction of the various genetic algorithm operators and how these interactions give rise to optimal parameters values is studied
