    Text Classification: A Review, Empirical, and Experimental Evaluation

    The explosive and widespread growth of data necessitates the use of text classification to extract crucial information from vast amounts of data. Consequently, there has been a surge of research in both classical and deep learning text classification methods. Despite the numerous methods proposed in the literature, there is still a pressing need for a comprehensive and up-to-date survey. Existing survey papers categorize algorithms for text classification into broad classes, which can lead to the misclassification of unrelated algorithms and incorrect assessments of their qualities and behaviors using the same metrics. To address these limitations, our paper introduces a novel methodological taxonomy that classifies algorithms hierarchically into fine-grained classes and specific techniques. The taxonomy includes methodology categories, methodology techniques, and methodology sub-techniques. Our study is the first survey to utilize this methodological taxonomy for classifying algorithms for text classification.     A Survey on Metric Learning for Feature Vectors and Structured Data

    The need for appropriate ways to measure the distance or similarity between data is ubiquitous in machine learning, pattern recognition and data mining, but handcrafting such good metrics for specific problems is generally difficult. This has led to the emergence of metric learning, which aims at automatically learning a metric from data and has attracted a lot of interest in machine learning and related fields for the past ten years. This survey paper proposes a systematic review of the metric learning literature, highlighting the pros and cons of each approach. We pay particular attention to Mahalanobis distance metric learning, a well-studied and successful framework, but additionally present a wide range of methods that have recently emerged as powerful alternatives, including nonlinear metric learning, similarity learning and local metric learning. Recent trends and extensions, such as semi-supervised metric learning, metric learning for histogram data and the derivation of generalization guarantees, are also covered. Finally, this survey addresses metric learning for structured data, in particular edit distance learning, and attempts to give an overview of the remaining challenges in metric learning for the years to come.Comment: Technical report, 59 pages.     Word Sense Disambiguation for Ontology Learning

    Ontology learning aims to automatically extract ontological concepts and relationships from related text repositories and is expected to be more efficient and scalable than manual ontology development. One of the challenging issues associated with ontology learning is word sense disambiguation (WSD). Most WSD research employs resources such as WordNet, text corpora, or a hybrid approach. Motivated by the large volume and richness of user-generated content in social media, this research explores the role of social media in ontology learning. Specifically, our approach exploits social media as a dynamic context rich data source for WSD. This paper presents a method and preliminary evidence for the efficacy of our proposed method for WSD. The research is in progress toward conducting a formal evaluation of the social media based method for WSD, and plans to incorporate the WSD routine into an ontology learning system in the future

    Survey on Automated Short Answer Grading with Deep Learning:from Word Embeddings to Transformers

    Automated short answer grading (ASAG) has gained attention in education as a means to scale educational tasks to the growing number of students. Recent progress in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning has largely influenced the field of ASAG, of which we survey the recent research advancements. We complement previous surveys by providing a comprehensive analysis of recently published methods that deploy deep learning approaches. In particular, we focus our analysis on the transition from hand engineered features to representation learning approaches, which learn representative features for the task at hand automatically from large corpora of data. We structure our analysis of deep learning methods along three categories: word embeddings, sequential models, and attention-based methods. Deep learning impacted ASAG differently than other fields of NLP, as we noticed that the learned representations alone do not contribute to achieve the best results, but they rather show to work in a complementary way with hand-engineered features. The best performance are indeed achieved by methods that combine the carefully hand-engineered features with the power of the semantic descriptions provided by the latest models, like transformers architectures. We identify challenges and provide an outlook on research direction that can be addressed in the futur

    The proliferation of the Semantic Web depends on ontologies for knowledge sharing, semantic annotation, data fusion, and descriptions of data for machine interpretation. However, ontologies are difficult to create and maintain. In addition, their structure and content may vary depending on the application and domain. Several methods described in literature have been used in creating ontologies from various data sources such as structured data in databases or unstructured text found in text documents or HTML documents. Various data mining techniques, natural language processing methods, syntactical analysis, machine learning methods, and other techniques have been used in building ontologies with automated and semi-automated processes. Due to the vast amount of unstructured text and its continued proliferation, the problem of constructing ontologies from text has attracted considerable attention for research. However, the constructed ontologies may be noisy, with missing and incorrect knowledge. Thus ontology construction continues to be a challenging research problem. The goal of this research is to investigate a new method for guiding a process of extracting and assembling candidate terms into domain specific concepts and relationships. The process is part of an overall semi automated system for creating ontologies from unstructured text sources and is driven by the user’s goals in an incremental process. The system applies natural language processing techniques and uses a series of syntactical analysis tools for extracting grammatical relations from a list of text terms representing the parts of speech of a sentence. The extraction process focuses on evaluating the subject predicate-object sequences of the text for potential concept-relation-concept triples to be built into an ontology. Users can guide the system by selecting seedling concept-relation-concept triples to assist building concepts from the extracted domain specific terms. As a result, the ontology building process develops into an incremental one that allows the user to interact with the system, to guide the development of an ontology, and to tailor the ontology for the user’s application needs.     X-ModalNet: A Semi-Supervised Deep Cross-Modal Network for Classification of Remote Sensing Data

    This paper addresses the problem of semi-supervised transfer learning with limited cross-modality data in remote sensing. A large amount of multi-modal earth observation images, such as multispectral imagery (MSI) or synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, are openly available on a global scale, enabling parsing global urban scenes through remote sensing imagery. However, their ability in identifying materials (pixel-wise classification) remains limited, due to the noisy collection environment and poor discriminative information as well as limited number of well-annotated training images. To this end, we propose a novel cross-modal deep-learning framework, called X-ModalNet, with three well-designed modules: self-adversarial module, interactive learning module, and label propagation module, by learning to transfer more discriminative information from a small-scale hyperspectral image (HSI) into the classification task using a large-scale MSI or SAR data. Significantly, X-ModalNet generalizes well, owing to propagating labels on an updatable graph constructed by high-level features on the top of the network, yielding semi-supervised cross-modality learning. We evaluate X-ModalNet on two multi-modal remote sensing datasets (HSI-MSI and HSI-SAR) and achieve a significant improvement in comparison with several state-of-the-art methods
