A lack of policy support is seen as one of the main barriers to wider adoption of agroforestry, with the integration of trees at a low density into agricultural land challenging the conventional specialisation of forestry and agricultural policy mechanisms. Within the EU, it is necessary to examine how agroforestry fits into the two pillars of agricultural support; Pillar I - direct aids and market support, and Pillar II - rural development, as well as within forestry policy schemes for farm woodlands
Context Aware Computing for The Internet of Things: A Survey
As we are moving towards the Internet of Things (IoT), the number of sensors
deployed around the world is growing at a rapid pace. Market research has shown
a significant growth of sensor deployments over the past decade and has
predicted a significant increment of the growth rate in the future. These
sensors continuously generate enormous amounts of data. However, in order to
add value to raw sensor data we need to understand it. Collection, modelling,
reasoning, and distribution of context in relation to sensor data plays
critical role in this challenge. Context-aware computing has proven to be
successful in understanding sensor data. In this paper, we survey context
awareness from an IoT perspective. We present the necessary background by
introducing the IoT paradigm and context-aware fundamentals at the beginning.
Then we provide an in-depth analysis of context life cycle. We evaluate a
subset of projects (50) which represent the majority of research and commercial
solutions proposed in the field of context-aware computing conducted over the
last decade (2001-2011) based on our own taxonomy. Finally, based on our
evaluation, we highlight the lessons to be learnt from the past and some
possible directions for future research. The survey addresses a broad range of
techniques, methods, models, functionalities, systems, applications, and
middleware solutions related to context awareness and IoT. Our goal is not only
to analyse, compare and consolidate past research work but also to appreciate

Gene Function Classification Using Bayesian Models with Hierarchy-Based Priors
We investigate the application of hierarchical classification schemes to the
annotation of gene function based on several characteristics of protein
sequences including phylogenic descriptors, sequence based attributes, and
predicted secondary structure. We discuss three Bayesian models and compare
their performance in terms of predictive accuracy. These models are the
ordinary multinomial logit (MNL) model, a hierarchical model based on a set of
nested MNL models, and a MNL model with a prior that introduces correlations
between the parameters for classes that are nearby in the hierarchy. We also
provide a new scheme for combining different sources of information. We use
these models to predict the functional class of Open Reading Frames (ORFs) from
the E. coli genome. The results from all three models show substantial
improvement over previous methods, which were based on the C5 algorithm. The
MNL model using a prior based on the hierarchy outperforms both the
non-hierarchical MNL model and the nested MNL model. In contrast to previous
attempts at combining these sources of information, our approach results in a
higher accuracy rate when compared to models that use each data source alone.
Together, these results show that gene function can be predicted with higher
accuracy than previously achieved, using Bayesian models that incorporate
suitable prior information
Economic Governance to Expand Commercial Wetlands: Within- and Cross-Scale Challenges
Commercial wetlands are defined as wetlands directed by an entrepreneur with the intention of making a profit. The combination of ecosystem services that commercial wetlands can provide seems to be an attractive societal perspective. Nevertheless, these wetlands are not developed on a large scale in the Netherlands. This paper discusses different types of economic governance that could facilitate the development of new commercial wetlands and addresses challenges that have to be overcome. We conclude that developing governance solutions that address ecosystem services with different scales is crucial for the introduction of commercial wetlands. Also, distinct and autonomous property rights of entrepreneurs need to be addressed
What shapes farmers' attitudes towards agri-environmental payments : A case study in Lozere
Agri-environment schemes were introduced into the Common agricultural policy (CAP) in 1992 as a financial instrument to support farming practices contributing to protect the environment and to preserve natural resources. They are based on the voluntary provision of environmental services (above and beyond the regulatory duty of care level) by farmers on their private land in return for a compensatory payment by the EU and the member state. Agri-environmental measures are the object of a contract between individual farmers and the environmental service purchaser (the state or the environmental public authority), specifying the actions that should be undertaken, the contract length, the control method and the payments made to farmers.
'On the Application of Hierarchical Coevolutionary Genetic Algorithms: Recombination and Evaluation Partners'
This paper examines the use of a hierarchical coevolutionary genetic algorithm under different partnering strategies. Cascading clusters of sub-populations are built from the bottom up, with higher-level sub-populations optimising larger parts of the problem. Hence higher-level sub-populations potentially search a larger search space with a lower resolution whilst lower-level sub-populations search a smaller search space with a higher resolution. The effects of different partner selection schemes amongst the sub-populations on solution quality are examined for two constrained optimisation problems. We examine a number of recombination partnering strategies in the construction of higher-level individuals and a number of related schemes for evaluating sub-solutions. It is shown that partnering strategies that exploit problem-specific knowledge are superior and can counter inappropriate (sub-) fitness measurements
