Aerated blast furnace slag filters for enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus removal from small wastewater treatment plants
Rock filters (RF) are a promising alternative technology for natural
wastewater treatment for upgrading WSP effluent. However, the application
of RF in the removal of eutrophic nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus, is very
limited. Accordingly, the overall objective of this study was to develop a lowcost
RF system for the purpose of enhanced nutrient removal from WSP
effluents, which would be able to produce effluents which comply with the
requirements of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD)
(911271lEEC) and suitable for small communities. Therefore, a combination
system comprising a primary facultative pond and an aerated rock filter
(ARF) system-either vertically or horizontally loaded-was investigated at
the University of Leeds' experimental station at Esholt Wastewater
Treatment Works, Bradford, UK.
Blast furnace slag (BFS) and limestone were selected for use in the ARF
system owing to their high potential for P removal and their low cost. This
study involved three major qperiments: (1) a comparison of aerated
vertical-flow and horizontal-flow limestone filters for nitrogen removal; (2) a
comparison of aerated limestone + blast furnace slag (BFS) filter and
aerated BFS filters for nitrogen and phosphorus removal; and (3) a
comparison of vertical-flow and horizontal-flow BFS filters for nitrogen and
phosphorus removal.
The vertical upward-flow ARF system was found to be superior to the
horizontal-flow ARF system in terms of nitrogen removal, mostly thiough
bacterial nitrification processes in both the aerated limestone and BFS filter
studies. The BFS filter medium (whieh is low-cost) showed a much higher
potential in removing phosphortls from pond effluent than the limestone
medium. As a result, the combination of a vertical upward-flow ARF system
and an economical and effective P-removal filter medium, such as BFS,
was found to be an ideal optionfor the total nutrient removal of both nitrogen
and phosphorus from wastewater.
In parallel with these experiments, studies on the aerated BFS filter effective
life and major in-filter phosphorus removal pathways were carried out. From
the standard batch experiments of Pmax adsorption capacity of BFS, as well
as six-month data collection of daily average P-removal, it was found that
the effective life of the aerated BFS filter was 6.5 years. Scanning electron
microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectrometric analyses on the surface of
BFS, particulates and sediment samples revealed that the apparent
mechanisms of P-removal in the filter are adsorption on the amorphous
oxide phase of the BFS surface and precipitation within the filter
Development of a novel 3D simulation modelling system for distributed manufacturing
This paper describes a novel 3D simulation modelling system for supporting our distributed machine design and control paradigm with respect to simulating and emulating machine behaviour on the Internet. The system has been designed and implemented using Java2D and Java3D. An easy assembly concept of drag-and-drop assembly has been realised and implemented by the introduction of new connection features (unified interface assembly features) between two assembly components (modules). The system comprises a hierarchical geometric modeller, a behavioural editor, and two assemblers. During modelling, designers can combine basic modelling primitives with general extrusions and integrate CAD geometric models into simulation models. Each simulation component (module) model can be visualised and animated in VRML browsers.
It is reusable. This makes machine design re-configurable and flexible. A case study example is given to support our conclusions
A Model-Driven Engineering Approach for ROS using Ontological Semantics
This paper presents a novel ontology-driven software engineering approach for
the development of industrial robotics control software. It introduces the
ReApp architecture that synthesizes model-driven engineering with semantic
technologies to facilitate the development and reuse of ROS-based components
and applications. In ReApp, we show how different ontological classification
systems for hardware, software, and capabilities help developers in discovering
suitable software components for their tasks and in applying them correctly.
The proposed model-driven tooling enables developers to work at higher
abstraction levels and fosters automatic code generation. It is underpinned by
ontologies to minimize discontinuities in the development workflow, with an
integrated development environment presenting a seamless interface to the user.
First results show the viability and synergy of the selected approach when

An approach to enacting business process models in support of the life cycle of integrated manufacturing systems
The complexity of enterprise engineering processes requires the application of
reference architectures as means of guiding the achievement of an adequate level of
business integration. This research aims to address important aspects of this
requirement by associating the formalism of reference architectures to various life cycle
phases of integrating manufacturing systems (IMS) and enabling their use in addressing
contemporary system engineering issues.
In pursuit of this aim, the following research activities were carried out: (1) to
devise a framework which supports key phases of the IMS life cycle and (2) to populate
part of this framework with an initial combination of architectures which can be
encapsulated into a computer-aided systems engineering environment. This has led to
the creation of a workbench capable of providing support for modelling, analysis,
simulation, rapid-prototyping, configuration and run-time operation of an IMS, based
on a consistent set of models associated with the engineering processes involved. The
research effort concentrated on selecting and investigating the use of appropriate
formalisms which underpin a selection of architectures and tools (i. e. CIM-OSA, Petrinets,
object-oriented methods and CIM-BIOSYS), this by designing, implementing,
applying and testing the workbench.
The main contribution of this research is to demonstrate that it is possible to
retain an adequate level of formalism, via computational structures and models, which
extend through the IMS life cycle from a conceptual description of the system through
to actions that the system performs when operating. The underlying methodology
which supported this contribution is based on enacting models of system behaviour
which encode important coordination aspects of manufacturing systems. The strategy
for demonstrating the incorporation of formalism to the IMS life cycle was to enable
the aggregation into a workbench of knowledge of 'what' the system is expected to
achieve (i. e. 'problems' to be addressed) and 'how' the system can achieve it (i. e
possible 'solutions'). Within the workbench, such a knowledge is represented through
an amalgamation of business process modelling and object-oriented modelling
approaches which, when adequately manipulated, can lead to business integration
An approach to resource modelling in support of the life cycle engineering of enterprise systems
Enterprise modelling can facilitate the design, analysis, control and construction of
contemporary enterprises which can compete in world-wide Product markets. This
research involves a systematic study of enterprise modelling with a particular focus on
resource modelling in support of the life cycle engineering of enterprise systems.
This led to the specification and design of a framework for resource modelling. This
framework was conceived to:
classify resource types;
identify the different functions that resource modelling can support, with respect to
different life phases of enterprise systems;
clarify the relationship between resource models and other modelling perspectives
provide mechanisms which link resource models and other types of models;
identify guidelines for the capture of information - on resources, leading to the
establishment of a set of resource reference models.
The author also designed and implemented a resource modelling tool which conforms
to the principles laid down by the framework. This tool realises important aspects of
the resource modeffing concepts so defined.
Furthermore, two case studies have been carried out. One models a metal cutting
environment, and the other is based on an electronics industry problem area. In this
way, the feasibility of concepts embodied in the framework and the design of the
resource modelling tool has been tested and evaluated.
Following a literature survey and preliminary investigation, the CIMOSA enterprise
modelling and integration methodology was adopted and extended within this
research. Here the resource modelling tool was built by extending SEWOSA (System
Engineering Workbench for Open System Architecture) and utilising the CIMBIOSYS
(CINI-Building Integrated Open SYStems) integrating infrastructure.
The main contributions of the research are that: a framework for resource modelling has been established; means and mechanisms have been proposed, implemented and tested which link and coordinate different modelling perspectives into an unified enterprise model; the mechanisms and resource models generated by this research support each Pfe
phase of systems engineering projects and demonstrate benefits by increasing the
degree to which the derivation process among models is automated

An Innovative Framework of Integrating ERP into IS 2010 Model Curriculum
The wide spread of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) technology has made information systems (IS) education shift the focus from functional applications development to enterprise software implementation and configuration. The latest model curriculum for undergraduate IS programs, the IS 2010, has made teaching the large and complex ERP software system an important issue. This paper presents a framework of innovatively integrating ERP into four core and three elective courses proposed in IS 2010. The paper illustrates the integrated ERP curriculum by discussing the design, content, and teaching methods for the seven courses using SAP as the software tool. The purpose of the paper is to provide a useful guideline for those who seek to teach ERP technology in the undergraduate IS curriculum
Capture and Maintenance of Constraints in Engineering Design
The thesis investigates two domains, initially the kite domain and then part of a more demanding Rolls-Royce domain (jet engine design). Four main types of refinement rules that use the associated application conditions and domain ontology to support the maintenance of constraints are proposed. The refinement rules have been implemented in ConEditor and the extended system is known as ConEditor+. With the help of ConEditor+, the thesis demonstrates that an explicit representation of application conditions together with the corresponding constraints and the domain ontology can be used to detect inconsistencies, redundancy, subsumption and fusion, reduce the number of spurious inconsistencies and prevent the identification of inappropriate refinements of redundancy, subsumption and fusion between pairs of constraints.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

An overview of decision table literature 1982-1995.
This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.
IMPLEMENTATION AND UNIFORM MANAGEMENT OF MODELLING ENTITIES IN A MASSIVELY FEATURE-OBJECT ORIENTED ADVANCED CAD ENVIRONMENT
Today we are spectators of the transition process in computer aided design from traditional geometry based on design systems to advanced computer-based engineering systems. The key is the feature technology that allows both integrating and managing modelling entities in a coherent way. Feature technology is developing rapidly. New research topics and contexts are emerging from time to time. This paper introduces concept, design and technological feature-objects to support operational, structural and morphological modelling of mechanical products. First, the feature-centred approaches to conceptual design are summarized and evaluated. Then an implementation of concept feature-objects and the methodology for using them is presented. The strength of concept feature-objects is in their morphology inclusive nature. They appear as parametrized three-dimensional
skeletons providing geometrical representations for the modelled engineering conceptions. A concept feature-object models the physical ports, contact surfaces related to ports, bones between ports, DOF of ports, relevant physical parameters, scientific and empirical descriptions of intentional transformations and environmental effects. Concept feature-objects are related to design feature-objects that, in turn, are constructed of a relevant
set of technological feature-entities. Concept feature-objects refer to the configurable and parametrized design feature-objects through an indexing mechanism. The conceptions have been tested during the programming and further development of the authors' PRODES system
