    Gathering over Meeting Nodes in Infinite Grid

    The gathering over meeting nodes problem asks the robots to gather at one of the pre-defined meeting nodes. The robots are deployed on the nodes of an anonymous two-dimensional infinite grid which has a subset of nodes marked as meeting nodes. Robots are identical, autonomous, anonymous and oblivious. They operate under an asynchronous scheduler. They do not have any agreement on a global coordinate system. All the initial configurations for which the problem is deterministically unsolvable have been characterized. A deterministic distributed algorithm has been proposed to solve the problem for the remaining configurations. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is studied in terms of the number of moves required for gathering. A lower bound concerning the total number of moves required to solve the gathering problem has been derived

    Synchronous Robots vs Asynchronous Lights-Enhanced Robots on Graphs

    AbstractIn this paper, we consider the distributed setting of computational mobile entities, called robots, that have to perform tasks without global coordination. Depending on the environment as well as on the robots' capabilities, tasks might be accomplished or not.In particular, we focus on the well-known scenario where the robots reside on the nodes of a graph and operate in Look-Compute-Move cycles. In one cycle, a robot perceives the current configuration in terms of robots positions (Look), decides whether to move toward some edge of the graph (Compute), and in the positive case it performs an instantaneous move along the computed edge (Move).We then compare two basic models: in the first model robots are fully synchronous, while in the second one robots are asynchronous and lights-enhanced, that is, each robot is equipped with a constant number of lights visible to all other robots. The question whether one model is more powerful than the other in terms of computable tasks has been considered in [Das et al., Int.'l Conf. on Distributed Computing Systems, 2012] but for robots moving on the Euclidean plane rather than on a graph.We provide two different tasks, and show that on graphs one task can be solved in the fully synchronous model but not in the asynchronous lights-enhanced model, while for the other task the converse holds. Hence we can assert that the fully synchronous model and the asynchronous lights-enhanced model are incomparable on graphs. This opens challenging directions in order to understand which peculiarities make the models so different

    Circle formation by asynchronous opaque robots on infinite grid

    This paper presents a distributed algorithm for circle formation problem under the infinite grid environment by asynchronous mobile opaque robots. Initially all the robots are acquiring distinct positions and they have to form a circle over the grid. Movements of the robots are restricted only along the grid lines. They do not share any global co-ordinate system. Robots are controlled by an asynchronous adversarial scheduler that operates in Look-Compute-Move cycles. The robots are indistinguishable by their nature, do not have any memory of their past configurations and previous actions. We consider the problem under luminous model, where robots communicate via lights, other than that they do not have any external communication system. Our protocol solves the  circle formation problem using seven colors. A subroutine of our algorithm also solves the line formation problem using three colors

    Practical Considerations and Applications for Autonomous Robot Swarms

    In recent years, the study of autonomous entities such as unmanned vehicles has begun to revolutionize both military and civilian devices. One important research focus of autonomous entities has been coordination problems for autonomous robot swarms. Traditionally, robot models are used for algorithms that account for the minimum specifications needed to operate the swarm. However, these theoretical models also gloss over important practical details. Some of these details, such as time, have been considered before (as epochs of execution). In this dissertation, we examine these details in the context of several problems and introduce new performance measures to capture practical details. Specifically, we introduce three new metrics: (1) the distance complexity (reflecting power usage and wear-and-tear of robots), (2) the spatial complexity (reflecting the space needed for the algorithm to work), and (3) local computational complexity (reflecting the computational requirements for each robot in the swarm). We apply these metrics in the study of some well-known and important problems, such as Complete Visibility and Arbitrary Pattern Formation. We also introduce and study a new problem, Doorway Egress, that captures the essence of a swarm’s navigation through restricted spaces. First, we examine the distance and spatial complexity used across a class of Complete Visibility algorithms. Second, we provide algorithms for Complete Visibility on an integer plane, including some that are asymptotically optimal in terms of time, distance complexity, and spatial complexity. Third, we introduce the problem of Doorway Egress and provide algorithms for a variety of robot swarm models with various optimalities. Finally, we provide an optimal algorithm for Arbitrary Pattern Formation on the grid

    "Semi-Asynchronous": A New Scheduler in Distributed Computing

    The study of mobile entities that based on local information have to accomplish global tasks is of main interest for the scientific community. Classic models for the activation and synchronization of mobile entities are the fully-synchronous (FSync), semi-synchronous (SSync), and asynchronous (Async) models, where entities alternate between active and inactive states with different timing. According to the assumed synchronization model, very different results have been achieved in the field of distributed computing. One of the main outcomes is the big gap between the Async and the other models in terms of manageability and algorithm design. In fact, there are still many problems for which it is not known whether synchronicity is crucial for designing resolution algorithms or not. In order to better understand the Async case, here we propose a further model referred to as the semi-asynchronous (SAsync). This slightly deviates from SSync. In fact, like in SSync (and FSync), the duration of the activation of an entity is kept of fixed time whereas, like in Async, the starting instant of the activation is not fully synchronized with the possible activation of other entities. We show that for entities moving on graphs, the SSync model allows accomplishing more tasks than the SAsync that in turn allows accomplishing more tasks than the Async. Furthermore, our results show that, especially to tackle problems in the Euclidean plane, the SAsync model is already quite challenging, therefore there is no need to get involved with complications arising in the Async model
