    Analyse hiérarchique d'images multimodales

    There is a growing interest in the development of adapted processing tools for multimodal images (several images acquired over the same scene with different characteristics). Allowing a more complete description of the scene, multimodal images are of interest in various image processing fields, but their optimal handling and exploitation raise several issues. This thesis extends hierarchical representations, a powerful tool for classical image analysis and processing, to multimodal images in order to better exploit the additional information brought by the multimodality and improve classical image processing techniques. %when applied to real applications. This thesis focuses on three different multimodalities frequently encountered in the remote sensing field. We first investigate the spectral-spatial information of hyperspectral images. Based on an adapted construction and processing of the hierarchical representation, we derive a segmentation which is optimal with respect to the spectral unmixing operation. We then focus on the temporal multimodality and sequences of hyperspectral images. Using the hierarchical representation of the frames in the sequence, we propose a new method to achieve object tracking and apply it to chemical gas plume tracking in thermal infrared hyperspectral video sequences. Finally, we study the sensorial multimodality, being images acquired with different sensors. Relying on the concept of braids of partitions, we propose a novel methodology of image segmentation, based on an energetic minimization framework.Il y a un intérêt grandissant pour le développement d’outils de traitements adaptés aux images multimodales (plusieurs images de la même scène acquises avec différentes caractéristiques). Permettant une représentation plus complète de la scène, ces images multimodales ont de l'intérêt dans plusieurs domaines du traitement d'images, mais les exploiter et les manipuler de manière optimale soulève plusieurs questions. Cette thèse étend les représentations hiérarchiques, outil puissant pour le traitement et l’analyse d’images classiques, aux images multimodales afin de mieux exploiter l’information additionnelle apportée par la multimodalité et améliorer les techniques classiques de traitement d’images. Cette thèse se concentre sur trois différentes multimodalités fréquemment rencontrées dans le domaine de la télédétection. Nous examinons premièrement l’information spectrale-spatiale des images hyperspectrales. Une construction et un traitement adaptés de la représentation hiérarchique nous permettent de produire une carte de segmentation de l'image optimale vis-à-vis de l'opération de démélange spectrale. Nous nous concentrons ensuite sur la multimodalité temporelle, traitant des séquences d’images hyperspectrales. En utilisant les représentations hiérarchiques des différentes images de la séquence, nous proposons une nouvelle méthode pour effectuer du suivi d’objet et l’appliquons au suivi de nuages de gaz chimique dans des séquences d’images hyperspectrales dans le domaine thermique infrarouge. Finalement, nous étudions la multimodalité sensorielle, c’est-à-dire les images acquises par différents capteurs.     The Forward Looking Interferometer (FLI) program was a multi-year cooperative research effort to investigate the use of imaging radiometers with high spectral resolution, using both modeling/simulation and field experiments, along with sophisticated data analysis techniques that were originally developed for analysis of data from space-based radiometers and hyperspectral imagers. This investigation has advanced the state of knowledge in this technical area, and the FLI program developed a greatly improved understanding of the radiometric signal strength of aviation hazards in a wide range of scenarios, in addition to a much better understanding of the real-world functionality requirements for hazard detection instruments. The project conducted field experiments on three hazards (turbulence, runway conditions, and wake vortices) and analytical studies on several others including volcanic ash, reduced visibility conditions, in flight icing conditions, and volcanic ash

    Utilizing Science and Technology to Enhance a Future Planetary Mission: Applications to Europa

    abstract: A thorough understanding of Europa's geology through the synergy of science and technology, by combining geologic mapping with autonomous onboard processing methods, enhances the science potential of future outer solar system missions. Mapping outlines the current state of knowledge of Europa's surface and near sub-surface, indicates the prevalence of distinctive geologic features, and enables a uniform perspective of formation mechanisms responsible for generating those features. I have produced a global geologic map of Europa at 1:15 million scale and appraised formation scenarios with respect to conditions necessary to produce observed morphologies and variability of those conditions over Europa's visible geologic history. Mapping identifies areas of interest relevant for autonomous study; it serves as an index for change detection and classification and aids pre-encounter targeting. Therefore, determining the detectability of geophysical activity is essential. Activity is evident by the presence of volcanic plumes or outgassing, disrupted surface morphologies, or changes in morphology, color, temperature, or composition; these characteristics reflect important constraints on the interior dynamics and evolutions of planetary bodies. By adapting machine learning and data mining techniques to signatures of plumes, morphology, and spectra, I have successfully demonstrated autonomous rule-based response and detection, identification, and classification of known events and features on outer planetary bodies using the following methods: 1. Edge-detection, which identifies the planetary horizon and highlights features extending beyond the limb; 2. Spectral matching using a superpixel endmember detection algorithm that identifies mean spectral signatures; and 3. Scale invariant feature transforms combined with supervised classification, which examines brightness gradients throughout an image, highlights extreme gradient regions, and classifies those regions based on a manually selected library of features. I have demonstrated autonomous: detection of volcanic plumes or jets at Io, Enceladus, and several comets, correlation between spectral signatures and morphological appearances of Europa's individual tectonic features, detection of ≤94% of known transient events on multiple planetary bodies, and classification of similar geologic features. Applying these results to conditions expected for Europa enables a prediction of the potential for detection and recommendations for mission concepts to increase the science return and efficiency of future missions to observe Europa.Dissertation/ThesisPh.D. Geological Sciences 201

    Bayesian Methods for Gas-Phase Tomography

    Gas-phase tomography refers to a set of techniques that determine the 2D or 3D distribution of a target species in a jet, plume, or flame using measurements of light, made around the boundary of a flow area. Reconstructed quantities may include the concentration of one or more species, temperature, pressure, and optical density, among others. Tomography is increasingly used to study fundamental aspects of turbulent combustion and monitor emissions for regulatory compliance. This thesis develops statistical methods to improve gas-phase tomography and reports two novel experimental applications. Tomography is an inverse problem, meaning that a forward model (calculating measurements of light for a known distribution of gas) is inverted to estimate the model parameters (transforming experimental data into a gas distribution). The measurement modality varies with the problem geometry and objective of the experiment. For instance, transmittance data from an array of laser beams that transect a jet may be inverted to recover 2D fields of concentration and temperature; and multiple high-resolution images of a flame, captured from different angles, are used to reconstruct wrinkling of the 3D reacting zone. Forward models for gas-phase tomography modalities share a common mathematical form, that of a Fredholm integral equation of the first-kind (IFK). The inversion of coupled IFKs is necessarily ill-posed, however, meaning that solutions are either unstable or non-unique. Measurements are thus insufficient in themselves to generate a realistic image of the gas and additional information must be incorporated into the reconstruction procedure. Statistical inversion is an approach to inverse problems in which the measurements, experimental parameters, and quantities of interest are treated as random variables, characterized by a probability distribution. These distributions reflect uncertainty about the target due to fluctuations in the flow field, noise in the data, errors in the forward model, and the ill-posed nature of reconstruction. The Bayesian framework for tomography features a likelihood probability density function (pdf), which describes the chance of observing a measurement for a given distribution of gas, and prior pdf, which assigns a relative plausibility to candidate distributions based on assumptions about the flow physics. Bayes’ equation updates information about the target in response to measurement data, combining the likelihood and prior functions to form a posterior pdf. The posterior is usually summarized by the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate, which is the most likely distribution of gas for a set of data, subject to the effects of noise, model errors, and prior information. The framework can be used to estimate credibility intervals for a reconstruction and the form of Bayes’ equation suggests procedures for improving gas tomography. The accuracy of reconstructions depends on the information content of the data, which is a function of the experimental design, as well as the specificity and validity of the prior. This thesis employs theoretical arguments and experimental measurements of scalar fluctuations to justify joint-normal likelihood and prior pdfs for gas-phase tomography. Three methods are introduced to improve each stage of the inverse problem: to develop priors, design optimal experiments, and select a discretization scheme. First, a self-similarity analysis of turbulent jets—common targets in gas tomography—is used to construct an advanced prior, informed by an estimate of the jet’s spatial covariance. Next, a Bayesian objective function is proposed to optimize beam positions in limited-data arrays, which are necessary in scenarios where optical access to the flow area is restricted. Finally, a Bayesian expression for model selection is derived from the joint-normal pdfs and employed to select a mathematical basis to reconstruct a flow. Extensive numerical evidence is presented to validate these methods. The dissertation continues with two novel experiments, conducted in a Bayesian way. Broadband absorption tomography is a new technique intended for quantitative emissions detection from spectrally-convolved absorption signals. Theoretical foundations for the diagnostic are developed and the results of a proof-of-concept emissions detection experiment are reported. Lastly, background-oriented schlieren (BOS) tomography is applied to combustion for the first time. BOS tomography employs measurements of beam steering to reconstruct a fluid’s optical density field, which can be used to infer temperature and density. The application of BOS tomography to flame imaging sets the stage for instantaneous 3D combustion thermometry. Numerical and experimental results reported in this thesis support a Bayesian approach to gas-phase tomography. Bayesian tomography makes the role of prior information explicit, which can be leveraged to optimize reconstructions and design better imaging systems in support of research on fluid flow and combustion dynamics
