    Control structure for a car-like robot using artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms

    The idea of improving human’s life quality by making life more comfortable and easy is nowadays possible using current technologies and techniques to solve complex daily problems. The presented idea in this work proposes a control strategy for autonomous robotic systems, specifically car-like robots. The main objective of this work is the development of a reactive navigation controller by means of obstacles avoidance and position control to reach a desired position in an unknown environment. This research goal was achieved by the integration of potential fields and neuroevolution controllers. The neuro-evolutionary controller was designed using the (NEAT) algorithm “Neuroevolution of Augmented Topologies” and trained using a designed training environment. The methodology used allowed the vehicle to reach a certain level of autonomy, obtaining a stable controller that includes kinematic and dynamic considerations.     Dynamic Modeling and Torque Feedforward based Optimal Fuzzy PD control of a High-Speed Parallel Manipulator

    Dynamic modeling and control of high-speed parallel manipulators are of importance due to their industrial applications deployed in production lines. However, there are still a number of open problems, such as the development of a precise dynamic model to be used in the model-based control design. This paper presents a four-limb parallel manipulator with Schönflies motion and its simplified dynamic modeling process. Then, in order to fix the issue that computed torque method control (CTC) will spend a lot of time to calculate dynamic parameters in real-time, offline torque feedforward-based PD (TFPD) control law is adopted in the control system. At the same time, fuzzy logic is also used to tune the gains of PD controller to adapt to the variation of external disturbance and compensate the un-modeled uncertainty. Additionally, bottom widths of membership functions of fuzzy controller are optimized by bat algorithm. Finally, three controllers of CTC, TFPD and bat algorithm-based torque feedforwad fuzzy PD controller (BA-TFFPD) are compared in trajectory tracking simulation. Fro the result, compared with TFPD and CTC, BA-TFFPD can lead faster transient response and lower tracking error, which prove the validity of BA-TFFPD

    Adaptive and learning-based formation control of swarm robots

    Autonomous aerial and wheeled mobile robots play a major role in tasks such as search and rescue, transportation, monitoring, and inspection. However, these operations are faced with a few open challenges including robust autonomy, and adaptive coordination based on the environment and operating conditions, particularly in swarm robots with limited communication and perception capabilities. Furthermore, the computational complexity increases exponentially with the number of robots in the swarm. This thesis examines two different aspects of the formation control problem. On the one hand, we investigate how formation could be performed by swarm robots with limited communication and perception (e.g., Crazyflie nano quadrotor). On the other hand, we explore human-swarm interaction (HSI) and different shared-control mechanisms between human and swarm robots (e.g., BristleBot) for artistic creation. In particular, we combine bio-inspired (i.e., flocking, foraging) techniques with learning-based control strategies (using artificial neural networks) for adaptive control of multi- robots. We first review how learning-based control and networked dynamical systems can be used to assign distributed and decentralized policies to individual robots such that the desired formation emerges from their collective behavior. We proceed by presenting a novel flocking control for UAV swarm using deep reinforcement learning. We formulate the flocking formation problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and consider a leader-follower configuration, where consensus among all UAVs is used to train a shared control policy, and each UAV performs actions based on the local information it collects. In addition, to avoid collision among UAVs and guarantee flocking and navigation, a reward function is added with the global flocking maintenance, mutual reward, and a collision penalty. We adapt deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with centralized training and decentralized execution to obtain the flocking control policy using actor-critic networks and a global state space matrix. In the context of swarm robotics in arts, we investigate how the formation paradigm can serve as an interaction modality for artists to aesthetically utilize swarms. In particular, we explore particle swarm optimization (PSO) and random walk to control the communication between a team of robots with swarming behavior for musical creation

    At present time, the application of mobile robot is commonly seen in every fields of science and engineering. The application is not only limited to industries but also in thehousehold, medical, defense, transportation, space and much more. They can perform all kind of tasks which human being cannot do efficiently and accurately such as working in hazardous and highly risk condition, space research etc. Hence, the autonomous navigation of mobile robot is the highly discussed topic of today in an uncertain environment. The present work concentrates on the implementation of the Artificial Intelligence approaches for the mobile robot navigation in an uncertain environment. The obstacle avoidance and optimal path planning is the key issue in autonomous navigation, which is solved in the present work by using artificial intelligent approaches. The methods use for the navigational accuracy and efficiency are Firefly Algorithm (FA), Probability- Fuzzy Logic (PFL), Matrix based Genetic Algorithm (MGA) and Hybrid controller (FAPFL,FA-MGA, FA-PFL-MGA).The proposed work provides an effective navigation of single and multiple mobile robots in both static and dynamic environment. The simulational analysis is carried over the Matlab software and then it is implemented on amobile robot for real-time navigation analysis. During the analysis of the proposed controller, it has been noticed that the Firefly Algorithm performs well as compared to fuzzy and genetic algorithm controller. It also plays an important role inbuilding the successful Hybrid approaches such as FA-PFL, FA-MGA, FA-PFL-MGA. The proposed hybrid methodology perform well over the individual controller especially for pathoptimality and navigational time. The developed controller also proves to be efficient when they are compared with other navigational controller such as Neural Network, Ant Colony Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, Neuro-Fuzzy etc

Mechatronic systems are manifold and range from machine components, motion generators, and power producing machines to more complex devices, such as robotic systems and transportation vehicles. With its twenty chapters, which collect contributions from many researchers worldwide, this book provides an excellent survey of recent work in the field of mechatronics with applications in various fields, like robotics, medical and assistive technology, human-machine interaction, unmanned vehicles, manufacturing, and education. We would like to thank all the authors who have invested a great deal of time to write such interesting chapters, which we are sure will be valuable to the readers. Chapters 1 to 6 deal with applications of mechatronics for the development of robotic systems. Medical and assistive technologies and human-machine interaction systems are the topic of chapters 7 to 13.Chapters 14 and 15 concern mechatronic systems for autonomous vehicles. Chapters 16-19 deal with mechatronics in manufacturing contexts. Chapter 20 concludes the book, describing a method for the installation of mechatronics education in schools

    Bio-inspired computation for big data fusion, storage, processing, learning and visualization: state of the art and future directions

    This overview gravitates on research achievements that have recently emerged from the confluence between Big Data technologies and bio-inspired computation. A manifold of reasons can be identified for the profitable synergy between these two paradigms, all rooted on the adaptability, intelligence and robustness that biologically inspired principles can provide to technologies aimed to manage, retrieve, fuse and process Big Data efficiently. We delve into this research field by first analyzing in depth the existing literature, with a focus on advances reported in the last few years. This prior literature analysis is complemented by an identification of the new trends and open challenges in Big Data that remain unsolved to date, and that can be effectively addressed by bio-inspired algorithms. As a second contribution, this work elaborates on how bio-inspired algorithms need to be adapted for their use in a Big Data context, in which data fusion becomes crucial as a previous step to allow processing and mining several and potentially heterogeneous data sources. This analysis allows exploring and comparing the scope and efficiency of existing approaches across different problems and domains, with the purpose of identifying new potential applications and research niches.     Navigational Strategies for Control of Underwater Robot using AI based Algorithms

    Autonomous underwater robots have become indispensable marine tools to perform various tedious and risky oceanic tasks of military, scientific, civil as well as commercial purposes. To execute hazardous naval tasks successfully, underwater robot needs an intelligent controller to manoeuver from one point to another within unknown or partially known three-dimensional environment. This dissertation has proposed and implemented various AI based control strategies for underwater robot navigation. Adaptive versions of neuro-fuzzy network and several stochastic evolutionary algorithms have been employed here to avoid obstacles or to escape from dead end situations while tracing near optimal path from initial point to destination of an impulsive underwater scenario. A proper balance between path optimization and collision avoidance has been considered as major aspects for evaluating performances of proposed navigational strategies of underwater robot. Online sensory information about position and orientation of both target and nearest obstacles with respect to the robot’s current position have been considered as inputs for path planners. To validate the feasibility of proposed control algorithms, numerous simulations have been executed within MATLAB based simulation environment where obstacles of different shapes and sizes are distributed in a chaotic manner. Simulation results have been verified by performing real time experiments of robot in underwater environment. Comparisons with other available underwater navigation approaches have also been accomplished for authentication purpose. Extensive simulation and experimental studies have ensured the obstacle avoidance and path optimization abilities of proposed AI based navigational strategies during motion of underwater robot. Moreover, a comparative study has been performed on navigational performances of proposed path planning approaches regarding path length and travel time to find out most efficient technique for navigation within an impulsive underwater environment
