    Computational Multimedia for Video Self Modeling

    Video self modeling (VSM) is a behavioral intervention technique in which a learner models a target behavior by watching a video of oneself. This is the idea behind the psychological theory of self-efficacy - you can learn or model to perform certain tasks because you see yourself doing it, which provides the most ideal form of behavior modeling. The effectiveness of VSM has been demonstrated for many different types of disabilities and behavioral problems ranging from stuttering, inappropriate social behaviors, autism, selective mutism to sports training. However, there is an inherent difficulty associated with the production of VSM material. Prolonged and persistent video recording is required to capture the rare, if not existed at all, snippets that can be used to string together in forming novel video sequences of the target skill. To solve this problem, in this dissertation, we use computational multimedia techniques to facilitate the creation of synthetic visual content for self-modeling that can be used by a learner and his/her therapist with a minimum amount of training data. There are three major technical contributions in my research. First, I developed an Adaptive Video Re-sampling algorithm to synthesize realistic lip-synchronized video with minimal motion jitter. Second, to denoise and complete the depth map captured by structure-light sensing systems, I introduced a layer based probabilistic model to account for various types of uncertainties in the depth measurement. Third, I developed a simple and robust bundle-adjustment based framework for calibrating a network of multiple wide baseline RGB and depth cameras

    B.O.G.G.L.E.S.: Boundary Optical GeoGraphic Lidar Environment System

    The purpose of this paper is to describe a pseudo X-ray vision system that pairs a Lidar scanner with a visualization device. The system as a whole is referred to as B.O.G.G.L.E.S. There are several key factors that went into the development of this system and the background information and design approach are thoroughly described. B.O.G.G.L.E.S functionality is depicted through the use of design constraints and the analysis of test results. Additionally, many possible developments for B.O.G.G.L.E.S are proposed in the paper. This indicates that there are various avenues of improvement for this project that could be implemented in the future

    DILF: Differentiable Rendering-Based Multi-View Image-Language Fusion for Zero-Shot 3D Shape Understanding

    Zero-shot 3D shape understanding aims to recognize “unseen” 3D categories that are not present in training data. Recently, Contrastive Language–Image Pre-training (CLIP) has shown promising open-world performance in zero-shot 3D shape understanding tasks by information fusion among language and 3D modality. It first renders 3D objects into multiple 2D image views and then learns to understand the semantic relationships between the textual descriptions and images, enabling the model to generalize to new and unseen categories. However, existing studies in zero-shot 3D shape understanding rely on predefined rendering parameters, resulting in repetitive, redundant, and low-quality views. This limitation hinders the model’s ability to fully comprehend 3D shapes and adversely impacts the text–image fusion in a shared latent space. To this end, we propose a novel approach called Differentiable rendering-based multi-view Image–Language Fusion (DILF) for zero-shot 3D shape understanding. Specifically, DILF leverages large-scale language models (LLMs) to generate textual prompts enriched with 3D semantics and designs a differentiable renderer with learnable rendering parameters to produce representative multi-view images. These rendering parameters can be iteratively updated using a text–image fusion loss, which aids in parameters’ regression, allowing the model to determine the optimal viewpoint positions for each 3D object. Then a group-view mechanism is introduced to model interdependencies across views, enabling efficient information fusion to achieve a more comprehensive 3D shape understanding. Experimental results can demonstrate that DILF outperforms state-of-the-art methods for zero-shot 3D classification while maintaining competitive performance for standard 3D classification.     RICo: Rotate-Inpaint-Complete for Generalizable Scene Reconstruction

    General scene reconstruction refers to the task of estimating the full 3D geometry and texture of a scene containing previously unseen objects. In many practical applications such as AR/VR, autonomous navigation, and robotics, only a single view of the scene may be available, making the scene reconstruction a very challenging task. In this paper, we present a method for scene reconstruction by structurally breaking the problem into two steps: rendering novel views via inpainting and 2D to 3D scene lifting. Specifically, we leverage the generalization capability of large language models to inpaint the missing areas of scene color images rendered from different views. Next, we lift these inpainted images to 3D by predicting normals of the inpainted image and solving for the missing depth values. By predicting for normals instead of depth directly, our method allows for robustness to changes in depth distributions and scale. With rigorous quantitative evaluation, we show that our method outperforms multiple baselines while providing generalization to novel objects and scenes

    3D-aware Image Generation using 2D Diffusion Models

    In this paper, we introduce a novel 3D-aware image generation method that leverages 2D diffusion models. We formulate the 3D-aware image generation task as multiview 2D image set generation, and further to a sequential unconditional-conditional multiview image generation process. This allows us to utilize 2D diffusion models to boost the generative modeling power of the method. Additionally, we incorporate depth information from monocular depth estimators to construct the training data for the conditional diffusion model using only still images. We train our method on a large-scale dataset, i.e., ImageNet, which is not addressed by previous methods. It produces high-quality images that significantly outperform prior methods. Furthermore, our approach showcases its capability to generate instances with large view angles, even though the training images are diverse and unaligned, gathered from "in-the-wild" real-world environments.Comment: Website: https://jeffreyxiang.github.io/ivid

    Large-Scale Light Field Capture and Reconstruction

    This thesis discusses approaches and techniques to convert Sparsely-Sampled Light Fields (SSLFs) into Densely-Sampled Light Fields (DSLFs), which can be used for visualization on 3DTV and Virtual Reality (VR) devices. Exemplarily, a movable 1D large-scale light field acquisition system for capturing SSLFs in real-world environments is evaluated. This system consists of 24 sparsely placed RGB cameras and two Kinect V2 sensors. The real-world SSLF data captured with this setup can be leveraged to reconstruct real-world DSLFs. To this end, three challenging problems require to be solved for this system: (i) how to estimate the rigid transformation from the coordinate system of a Kinect V2 to the coordinate system of an RGB camera; (ii) how to register the two Kinect V2 sensors with a large displacement; (iii) how to reconstruct a DSLF from a SSLF with moderate and large disparity ranges. To overcome these three challenges, we propose: (i) a novel self-calibration method, which takes advantage of the geometric constraints from the scene and the cameras, for estimating the rigid transformations from the camera coordinate frame of one Kinect V2 to the camera coordinate frames of 12-nearest RGB cameras; (ii) a novel coarse-to-fine approach for recovering the rigid transformation from the coordinate system of one Kinect to the coordinate system of the other by means of local color and geometry information; (iii) several novel algorithms that can be categorized into two groups for reconstructing a DSLF from an input SSLF, including novel view synthesis methods, which are inspired by the state-of-the-art video frame interpolation algorithms, and Epipolar-Plane Image (EPI) inpainting methods, which are inspired by the Shearlet Transform (ST)-based DSLF reconstruction approaches

    Weakly Supervised Learning for Multi-Image Synthesis

    Machine learning-based approaches have been achieving state-of-the-art results on many computer vision tasks. While deep learning and convolutional networks have been incredibly popular, these approaches come at the expense of huge amounts of labeled data required for training. Manually annotating large amounts of data, often millions of images in a single dataset, is costly and time consuming. To deal with the problem of data annotation, the research community has been exploring approaches that require less amount of labelled data. The central problem that we consider in this research is image synthesis without any manual labeling. Image synthesis is a classic computer vision task that requires understanding of image contents and their semantic and geometric properties. We propose that we can train image synthesis models by relying on sequences of videos and using weakly supervised learning. Large amounts of unlabeled data are freely available on the internet. We propose to set up the training in a multi-image setting so that we can use one of the images as the target - this allows us to rely only on images for training and removes the need for manual annotations. We demonstrate three main contributions in this work. First, we present a method of fusing multiple noisy overhead images to make a single, artifact-free image. We present a weakly supervised method that relies on crowd-sourced labels from online maps and a completely unsupervised variant that only requires a series of satellite images as inputs. Second, we propose a single-image novel view synthesis method for complex, outdoor scenes. We propose a learning-based method that uses pairs of nearby images captured on urban roads and their respective GPS coordinates as supervision. We show that a model trained with this automatically captured data can render a new view of a scene that can be as far as 10 meters from the input image. Third, we consider the problem of synthesizing new images of a scene under different conditions, such as time of day and season, based on a single input image. As opposed to existing methods, we do not need manual annotations for transient attributes, such as fog or snow, for training. We train our model by using streams of images captured from outdoor webcams and time-lapse videos. Through these applications, we show several settings where we can train state-of-the-art deep learning methods without manual annotations. This work focuses on three image synthesis tasks. We propose weakly supervised learning and remove requirements for manual annotations by relying on sequences of images. Our approach is in line with the research efforts that aim to minimize the labels required for training machine learning methods

    Remote sensing image fusion on 3D scenarios: A review of applications for agriculture and forestry

    Three-dimensional (3D) image mapping of real-world scenarios has a great potential to provide the user with a more accurate scene understanding. This will enable, among others, unsupervised automatic sampling of meaningful material classes from the target area for adaptive semi-supervised deep learning techniques. This path is already being taken by the recent and fast-developing research in computational fields, however, some issues related to computationally expensive processes in the integration of multi-source sensing data remain. Recent studies focused on Earth observation and characterization are enhanced by the proliferation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and sensors able to capture massive datasets with a high spatial resolution. In this scope, many approaches have been presented for 3D modeling, remote sensing, image processing and mapping, and multi-source data fusion. This survey aims to present a summary of previous work according to the most relevant contributions for the reconstruction and analysis of 3D models of real scenarios using multispectral, thermal and hyperspectral imagery. Surveyed applications are focused on agriculture and forestry since these fields concentrate most applications and are widely studied. Many challenges are currently being overcome by recent methods based on the reconstruction of multi-sensorial 3D scenarios. In parallel, the processing of large image datasets has recently been accelerated by General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU) approaches that are also summarized in this work.
