Enhancing speech corpus resources with multiple lexical tag layers

    Get PDF
We describe a general two-stage procedure for re-using a custom corpus for spoken language system development involving a transformation from character-based markup to XML, and DSSSL stylesheet-driven XML markup enhancement with multiple lexical tag trees. The procedure was used to generate a fully tagged corpus; alternatively with greater economy of computing resources, it can be employed as a parametrised ‘tagging on demand’ filter. The implementation will shortly be released as a public resource together with the corpus (German spoken dialogue, about 500k word form tokens) and lexicon (about 75k word form types)

    Software documentation

This thesis report is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering, 2006.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis report.Includes bibliographical references (page 92).The main objective of my thesis is to generate a user manual that would be very much comprehensible at the same time well structured and would act as an effective navigator. Documentation is mainly requisite for better communication among the different members of a software development team, such as designers of finer grained components, builders of interfacing system, implementers, testers, performance engineers, technical managers, analysts, quality specialists. In order to develop a very comprehensive documentation there are certain conventions that are requisite to be taken care of. Those conventions and rules have been high lighted extensively. There are different types of documentation based on the requirements of each individual associated with the software development life cycle and they are design, code, user, architectural, trade study and marketing are few to mention. However, my focus area is user documentation. Unlike code documents, user documents are usually far divorced from the source code of the program, and instead simply describe how it is used. The use of XML and Docbook is there. DocBook simply provides a framework. All the presentation issues are devolved to style sheets.Tahmina Zaman KhanB. Computer Science and Engineerin

Flows and Frictions in Trans-Himalayan Spaces

    Get PDF
Flows and Frictions in Trans-Himalayan Spaces traces movements and connections in a region known for its formidable obstacles to mobility. Eight original essays and a conceptual introduction engage with questions of networks and interconnection between people across a bordered landscape. Mobility among the extremely varied ecologies of south-western China, Myanmar and north-eastern India, with their rugged terrain, high mountains, monsoon-fed rivers and marshy lowlands, is certainly subject to friction. But today, harsh political realities have created hard borders and fractured this trans-Himalayan terrain. However, the closely researched chapters in this book demonstrate that these borders have not prevented an abundance of movements, connections and flows. Mobility has always coexisted with friction here, but this coexistence has been unsettled, giving this space its historical shape and its contemporary dynamism. Introducing the concept of the ‘corridor’ as an analytical framework, this collection investigates mobility and flows in this unique socio-political landscape

Novel approaches to the monitoring of computer networks

    Get PDF
Traditional network monitoring techniques suffer from a number of limitations. They are usually designed to solve the most general case, and as a result often fall short of expectation. This project sets out to provide the network administrator with a set of alternative tools to solve specific, but common, problems. It uses the network at Rhodes University as a case study and addresses a number of issues that arise on this network. Four problematic areas are identified within this network: the automatic determination of network topology and layout, the tracking of network growth, the determination of the physical and logical locations of hosts on the network, and the need for intelligent fault reporting systems. These areas are chosen because other network monitoring techniques have failed to adequately address these problems, and because they present problems that are common across a large number of networks. Each area is examined separately and a solution is sought for each of the problems identified. As a result, a set of tools is developed to solve these problems using a number of novel network monitoring techniques. These tools are designed to be as portable as possible so as not to limit their use to the case study network. Their use within Rhodes, as well as their applicability to other situations is discussed. In all cases, any limitations and shortfalls in the approaches that were employed are examined

The Object of Platform Studies: Relational Materialities and the Social Platform (the case of the Nintendo Wii)

Racing the Beam: The Atari Video Computer System,by Ian Bogost and Nick Montfort, inaugurated thePlatform Studies series at MIT Press in 2009.We’ve coauthored a new book in the series, Codename: Revolution: the Nintendo Wii Video Game Console. Platform studies is a quintessentially Digital Humanities approach, since it’s explicitly focused on the interrelationship of computing and cultural expression. According to the series preface, the goal of platform studies is “to consider the lowest level of computing systems and to understand how these systems relate to culture and creativity.”In practice, this involves paying close attentionto specific hardware and software interactions--to the vertical relationships between a platform’s multilayered materialities (Hayles; Kirschenbaum),from transistors to code to cultural reception. Any given act of platform-studies analysis may focus for example on the relationship between the chipset and the OS, or between the graphics processor and display parameters or game developers’ designs. In computing terms, platform is an abstraction(Bogost and Montfort), a pragmatic frame placed around whatever hardware-and-software configuration is required in order to build or run certain specificapplications (including creative works). The object of platform studies is thus a shifting series of possibility spaces, any number of dynamic thresholds between discrete levels of a system

    Further development of OpenJade

This paper explains plans for the immediate development of the OpenSP/OpenJade tool-set, its objectives and philosophical approach, and the partial results already obtained. Four works in progress are explained: extension of the style language towards complete coverage of page and column models, and plans to include bidirectional communication between formatter and style engine; full coverage of the grove model for the SGML propset; completion of the query feature together with the full implementation of the transformation language; and integration of OpenJade into the Apache project. Finally, one application of OpenJade being developed is presented, and future work is pointed out. Rendered by www.RenderX.co
