    Integration of Action and Language Knowledge: A Roadmap for Developmental Robotics

This in turn will benefit the design of cognitive robots capable of learning to handle and manipulate objects and tools autonomously, to cooperate and communicate with other robots and humans, and to adapt their abilities to changing internal, environmental, and social conditions. Four key areas of research challenges are discussed, specifically for the issues related to the understanding of: 1) how agents learn and represent compositional actions; 2) how agents learn and represent compositional lexica; 3) the dynamics of social interaction and learning; and 4) how compositional action and language representations are integrated to bootstrap the cognitive system. The review of specific issues and progress in these areas is then translated into a practical roadmap based on a series of milestones. These milestones provide a possible set of cognitive robotics goals and test scenarios, thus acting as a research roadmap for future work on cognitive developmental robotics.Peer reviewe

    A Continuous Grasp Representation for the Imitation Learning of Grasps on Humanoid Robots

    Models and methods are presented which enable a humanoid robot to learn reusable, adaptive grasping skills. Mechanisms and principles in human grasp behavior are studied. The findings are used to develop a grasp representation capable of retaining specific motion characteristics and of adapting to different objects and tasks. Based on the representation a framework is proposed which enables the robot to observe human grasping, learn grasp representations, and infer executable grasping actions

    Pragmatic Frames for Teaching and Learning in Human-Robot interaction: Review and Challenges

FRONTIERS IN NEUROROBOTICS. 2016;10: 10.One of the big challenges in robotics today is to learn from human users that are inexperienced in interacting with robots but yet are often used to teach skills flexibly to other humans and to children in particular. A potential route toward natural and efficient learning and teaching in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is to leverage the social competences of humans and the underlying interactional mechanisms. In this perspective, this article discusses the importance of pragmatic frames as flexible interaction protocols that provide important contextual cues to enable learners to infer new action or language skills and teachers to convey these cues. After defining and discussing the concept of pragmatic frames, grounded in decades of research in developmental psychology, we study a selection of HRI work in the literature which has focused on learning-teaching interaction and analyze the interactional and learning mechanisms that were used in the light of pragmatic frames. This allows us to show that many of the works have already used in practice, but not always explicitly, basic elements of the pragmatic frames machinery. However, we also show that pragmatic frames have so far been used in a very restricted way as compared to how they are used in human-human interaction and argue that this has been an obstacle preventing robust natural multi-task learning and teaching in HRI. In particular, we explain that two central features of human pragmatic frames, mostly absent of existing HRI studies, are that (1) social peers use rich repertoires of frames, potentially combined together, to convey and infer multiple kinds of cues; (2) new frames can be learnt continually, building on existing ones, and guiding the interaction toward higher levels of complexity and expressivity. To conclude, we give an outlook on the future research direction describing the relevant key challenges that need to be solved for leveraging pragmatic frames for robot learning and teaching

    Bimanual rope manipulation skill synthesis through context dependent correction policy learning from human demonstration

    Learning from demonstration (LfD) provides a convenient means to equip robots with dexterous skills when demonstration can be obtained in robot intrinsic coordinates. However, the problem of compounding errors in long and complex skills reduces its wide deployment. Since most such complex skills are composed of smaller movements that are combined, considering the target skill as a sequence of compact motor primitives seems reasonable. Here the problem that needs to be tackled is to ensure that a motor primitive ends in a state that allows the successful execution of the subsequent primitive. In this study, we focus on this problem by proposing to learn an explicit correction policy when the expected transition state between primitives is not achieved. The correction policy is itself learned via behavior cloning by the use of a state-of-the-art movement primitive learning architecture, Conditional Neural Motor Primitives (CNMPs). The learned correction policy is then able to produce diverse movement trajectories in a context dependent way. The advantage of the proposed system over learning the complete task as a single action is shown with a table-top setup in simulation, where an object has to be pushed through a corridor in two steps. Then, the applicability of the proposed method to bi-manual knotting in the real world is shown by equipping an upper-body humanoid robot with the skill of making knots over a bar in 3D space. The experiments show that the robot can perform successful knotting even when the faced correction cases are not part of the human demonstration set

    Affordances in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Robotics: A Survey

    The concept of affordances appeared in psychology during the late 60s as an alternative perspective on the visual perception of the environment. It was revolutionary in the intuition that the way living beings perceive the world is deeply influenced by the actions they are able to perform. Then, across the last 40 years, it has influenced many applied fields, e.g., design, human-computer interaction, computer vision, and robotics. In this paper, we offer a multidisciplinary perspective on the notion of affordances. We first discuss the main definitions and formalizations of the affordance theory, then we report the most significant evidence in psychology and neuroscience that support it, and finally we review the most relevant applications of this concept in robotics
