    From perception to behavior: The neural circuits underlying prey hunting in larval zebrafish

    A key challenge for neural systems is to extract relevant information from the environment and make appropriate behavioral responses. The larval zebrafish offers an exciting opportunity for studying these sensing processes and sensory-motor transformations. Prey hunting is an instinctual behavior of zebrafish that requires the brain to extract and combine different attributes of the sensory input and form appropriate motor outputs. Due to its small size and transparency the larval zebrafish brain allows optical recording of whole-brain activity to reveal the neural mechanisms involved in prey hunting and capture. In this review we discuss how the larval zebrafish brain processes visual information to identify and locate prey, the neural circuits governing the generation of motor commands in response to prey, how hunting behavior can be modulated by internal states and experience, and some outstanding questions for the field

    The gatekeeper: individual differences are key in the chain from perception to behaviour

    A basic assumption in mainstream social cognition is that the path from perception to behaviour is often automatic and direct, as supported for example by several experimental studies showing that priming can lead directly to a congruent behaviour without any need of conscious awareness of the process. However, we argue that the priming of a goal or an object activates individual differences in automatic evaluations at the associative level that in turn are the key predictors of action (gatekeeper model). A study (n = 90) on the American stereotype is presented to support the model. The results show that individual differences of the American stereotype as assessed with the IAT predicts a relevant action (essay evaluation) but only under condition of priming. Broader implications for predictive validity of implicit measures are also discussed

    Autonomous Reinforcement of Behavioral Sequences in Neural Dynamics

    We introduce a dynamic neural algorithm called Dynamic Neural (DN) SARSA(\lambda) for learning a behavioral sequence from delayed reward. DN-SARSA(\lambda) combines Dynamic Field Theory models of behavioral sequence representation, classical reinforcement learning, and a computational neuroscience model of working memory, called Item and Order working memory, which serves as an eligibility trace. DN-SARSA(\lambda) is implemented on both a simulated and real robot that must learn a specific rewarding sequence of elementary behaviors from exploration. Results show DN-SARSA(\lambda) performs on the level of the discrete SARSA(\lambda), validating the feasibility of general reinforcement learning without compromising neural dynamics.Comment: Sohrob Kazerounian, Matthew Luciw are Joint first author

    Self-disclosure in Social Network Sites: An Integration of Stimulus-Organism-Response Paradigm and Privacy Calculus Model

    This study aims to research the influencing factors of self-disclosure in social network sites (SNSs). Although much has been reported on the issue of influence factors of self-disclosure, very few have been discussed from the aspect of environment stimulus. Drawing upon the Privacy Calculus model and the Stimulus-Organism-Response paradigm, we developed an integrated model to investigate the impacts of SNSs features as environment stimuli on users’ perceived value and subsequently their self-disclosure behavior. The results indicate that self-disclosure in SNSs is determined by the tradeoff between perceived benefits (relationship management and enjoyment) and costs (privacy risk). And users’ perceptions of SNSs features (interactivity, personalization and privacy control) have significant impacts on perceived value and self-disclosure behavior

    The Covid-19 pandemic has changed social behaviour in society. Especially in the process of building relationships with opposite sex, which is usually done face-to-face, is now turning online. This is the impact of the government's policy to limit large-scale social activities to prevent the development of the coronavirus. In 2020, the number of chat exchanges on the Tinder app increased by 23%. Nowadays people prefer to get to know others online before deciding to meet in person. Social Penetration Theory (TPS) can be used to analyse the process of communication and self-disclosure of an individual in building interpersonal relationships. This theory describes a person like an onion that has various layers in it because someone only provides general information in the early stages of a relationship then reveals more personal information when they get close and build trust. This research is different from previous work because it analyses TPS on Tinder application users during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to review TPS on Tinder application users by testing the main assumptions of the theory in relationship development and self-disclosure. This study uses a qualitative approach. Data collection is done by searching for articles journals with keywords TPS and the use of Tinder application to build relationships. The results show that the self-disclosure mediated by digital technology can limit the general and personal information shared by its users. The limitation of it lies in the ability to read non-verbal messages. Gender factors influence how individuals build relationships in the early stages. Men tend to approach women aggressively using jokes or funny statements, while women rely more on subtle cues. Future research can focus on the communication of Tinder application users at different age ranges. This research is expected to be input for research on online communication, self-disclosure and relationship development

    Investigating Circular Behavior Adoption across Gen Z: The Role of Perceived Value and Environmental Consciousness

    This research explores Gen Z consumers in the context of the circular economy (Ce). Building on generational cohort theory (Gct), the study investigates to what extent Gen Z perceptions of circular products (Cps) and the level of their environmental consciousness influence their propensity to adopt circular behaviors. Primary data from 130 respondents through a structured web survey were collected across the main social media platforms. A factor analysis identifying the main Ce-related loops (i.e. slowing, dematerializing, intensifying) along with an Ols model was performed. The results exhibit a positive relationship between Gen Z perceptions of Cps and the slowing and intensifying loops, while environmental consciousness is positively related to dematerializing and slowing loops.
