Understanding information needs of Australian business organisations
Over the past decade, universities have used repositories as channels
to create access to research outputs. Increasingly government and
universities are seeking to optimise the impact of their research,
particularly to improve public policy. This study looks at the impact
of access to research from the perspective of business associations
and researchers. It finds that business organisations value trusted
timely, relevant research. Accessibility and peer-reviewed research
outputs are highly valued but little used. Barriers to use of the research
include availability (material not openly accessible), discoverability
(ranking on search engines) and knowledge by trusted mediators and
connectivity (presentation as part of a cohort of scholarly knowledge).
Barriers for researchers include lack of rewards and recognition for
research outputs focused on these organisations. The theories used in
the study include triple helix, Kautto-Koivula and Huhtaniemi’s model
for knowledge and competence management and actor network
theory. The study concludes that significant work is required to
improve the accessibility and discoverability of research. In particular,
the search paradigm is insufficient to provide optimal awareness of

Mejorando la Ciencia Abierta Usando Datos Abiertos Enlazados: Caso de Uso CONICET Digital
Los servicios de publicación cientÃfica están cambiando drásticamente, los investigadores demandan servicios de búsqueda inteligentes para descubrir y relacionar publicaciones cientÃficas. Los editores deben incorporar información semántica para organizar mejor sus activos digitales y hacer que las publicaciones sean más visibles. En este documento, presentamos el trabajo en curso para publicar un subconjunto de publicaciones cientÃficas de CONICET Digital como datos abiertos enlazados. El objetivo de este trabajo es mejorar la recuperación y la reutilización de datos a través de tecnologÃas de Web Semántica y Datos Enlazados en el dominio de las publicaciones cientÃficas. Para lograr estos objetivos, se han tenido en cuenta los estándares de la Web Semántica y los esquemas RDF (DublÃn Core, FOAF, VoID, etc.). El proceso de conversión y publicación se basa en las pautas metodológicas para publicar datos vinculados de gobierno. También describimos como estos datos se pueden vincular a otros conjuntos de datos como DBLP, Wikidata y DBPedia. Finalmente, mostramos algunos ejemplos de consultas que responden a preguntas que inicialmente no permite CONICET Digital.Scientific publication services are changing drastically, researchers demand intelligent search services to discover and relate scientific publications. In this paper, we present the on-going work to publish a subset of scientific publications of CONICET Digital as Linked Open Data. The conversion and publication process is guided by the methodological guidelines for publishing government linked data. We also outline how these data can be linked to other datasets DBLP, WIKIDATA and DBPEDIA on the web of data. Interoperability and FAIRness through a novel combination of Web technologies
Data in the life sciences are extremely diverse and are stored in a broad spectrum of repositories ranging from those designed for particular data types (such as KEGG for pathway data or UniProt for protein data) to those that are general-purpose (such as FigShare, Zenodo, Dataverse or EUDAT). These data have widely different levels of sensitivity and security considerations. For example, clinical observations about genetic mutations in patients are highly sensitive, while observations of species diversity are generally not. The lack of uniformity in data models from one repository to another, and in the richness and availability of metadata descriptions, makes integration and analysis of these data a manual, time-consuming task with no scalability. Here we explore a set of resource-oriented Web design patterns for data discovery, accessibility, transformation, and integration that can be implemented by any general- or special-purpose repository as a means to assist users in finding and reusing their data holdings. We show that by using off-the-shelf technologies, interoperability can be achieved atthe level of an individual spreadsheet cell. We note that the behaviours of this architecture compare favourably to the desiderata defined by the FAIR Data Principles, and can therefore represent an exemplar implementation of those principles. The proposed interoperability design patterns may be used to improve discovery and integration of both new and legacy data, maximizing the utility of all scholarly outputs
DRIVER Technology Watch Report
This report is part of the Discovery Workpackage (WP4) and is the third report out of four deliverables. The objective of this report is to give an overview of the latest technical developments in the world of digital repositories, digital libraries and beyond, in order to serve as theoretical and practical input for the technical DRIVER developments, especially those focused on enhanced publications. This report consists of two main parts, one part focuses on interoperability standards for enhanced publications, the other part consists of three subchapters, which give a landscape picture of current and surfacing technologies and communities crucial to DRIVER. These three subchapters contain the GRID, CRIS and LTP communities and technologies. Every chapter contains a theoretical explanation, followed by case studies and the outcomes and opportunities for DRIVER in this field
Theory and Practice of Data Citation
Citations are the cornerstone of knowledge propagation and the primary means
of assessing the quality of research, as well as directing investments in
science. Science is increasingly becoming "data-intensive", where large volumes
of data are collected and analyzed to discover complex patterns through
simulations and experiments, and most scientific reference works have been
replaced by online curated datasets. Yet, given a dataset, there is no
quantitative, consistent and established way of knowing how it has been used
over time, who contributed to its curation, what results have been yielded or
what value it has.
The development of a theory and practice of data citation is fundamental for
considering data as first-class research objects with the same relevance and
centrality of traditional scientific products. Many works in recent years have
discussed data citation from different viewpoints: illustrating why data
citation is needed, defining the principles and outlining recommendations for
data citation systems, and providing computational methods for addressing
specific issues of data citation.
The current panorama is many-faceted and an overall view that brings together
diverse aspects of this topic is still missing. Therefore, this paper aims to
describe the lay of the land for data citation, both from the theoretical (the

Anthropology and Open Access
While still largely ignored by many anthropologists, open access (OA) has been a confusing and volatile center around which a wide range of contentious debates and vexing leadership dilemmas orbit. Despite widespread misunderstandings and honest differences of perspective on how and why to move forward, OA frameworks for scholarly communication are now part of the publishing ecology in which all active anthropologists work. Cultural Anthropology is unambiguously a leading journal in the field. The move to transition it toward a gold OA model represents a milestone for the iterative transformation of how cultural anthropologists, along with diverse fellow travelers, communicate more ethically and sustainably with global and diverse publics. On the occasion of this significant shift, we build on the history of OA debates, position statements, and experiments taking place during the past decade to do three things. Using an interview format, we will offer a primer on OA practices in general and in cultural anthropology in particular. In doing so, we aim to highlight some of the special considerations that have animated arguments for OA in cultural anthropology and in neighboring fields built around ethnographic methods and representations. We then argue briefly for a critical anthropology of scholarly communication (including scholarly publishing), one that brings the kinds of engaged analysis for which Cultural Anthropology is particularly well known to bear on this vital aspect of knowledge production, circulation, and valuation. Our field’s distinctive knowledge of social, cultural, political, and economic phenomena should also—but often has not—inform our choices as both global actors and publishing scholars
