    Formal specification of MPI 2.0: case study in specifying a practical concurrent programming API

    technical reportWe describe the rst formal speci cation of a non-trivial subset of MPI, the dominant communication API in high performance computing. Engineering a formal speci cation for a non-trivial concurrency API requires the right combination of rigor, executability, and traceability, while also serving as a smooth elaboration of a pre-existing informal speci - cation. It also requires the modularization of reusable speci cation components to keep the length of the speci cation in check. Long-lived APIs such as MPI are not usually `textbook minimalistic' because they support a diverse array of applications, a diverse community of users, and have ef cient implementations over decades of computing hardware. We choose the TLA+ notation to write our speci cations, and describe how we organized the speci - cation of 150 of the 300 MPI 2.0 functions. We detail a handful of these functions in this paper, and assess our speci cation with respect to the aforesaid requirements. We close with a description of possible approaches that may help render the act of writing, understanding, and validating speci cations much more productive

    Generalized Portable SHMEM library for high performance computing

    The Generalized Portable SHMEM library (GPSHMEM) is a portable implementation of the SHMEM library originally released by Cray Research Inc. on the Cray T3D. SHMEM and GPSHMEM realize the distributed shared memory programming model, that is, a shared memory programming model in environments in which memory is physically distributed. It is intended for use on a large variety of hardware platforms, including distributed systems with a network interconnect. The programming interface of GPSHMEM follows that of SHMEM and includes remote memory access operations (one-sided communication) and a set of collective routines such as broadcast, collection and reduction. Programming interfaces for C and Fortran are provided. Because of the minimal assumptions about the underlying hardware, GPSHMEM does not implement the full SHMEM T3D interface. The lack of a few functions is compensated by a set of extensions, including dynamic memory allocation for Fortran 77. To ease porting of SHMEM-enabled scientific Fortran 77 code from the Cray machines to use with GPSHMEM, a specialized Fortran 77 preprocessor was designed and developed

    Best-first heuristic search for multicore machines

    To harness modern multicore processors, it is imperative to develop parallel versions of fundamental algorithms. In this paper, we compare different approaches to parallel best-first search in a shared-memory setting. We present a new method, PBNF, that uses abstraction to partition the state space and to detect duplicate states without requiring frequent locking. PBNF allows speculative expansions when necessary to keep threads busy. We identify and fix potential livelock conditions in our approach, proving its correctness using temporal logic. Our approach is general, allowing it to extend easily to suboptimal and anytime heuristic search. In an empirical comparison on STRIPS planning, grid pathfinding, and sliding tile puzzle problems using 8-core machines, we show that A*, weighted A* and Anytime weighted A* implemented using PBNF yield faster search than improved versions of previous parallel search proposals

    Development of Linguistic Linked Open Data Resources for Collaborative Data-Intensive Research in the Language Sciences

    This book is the product of an international workshop dedicated to addressing data accessibility in the linguistics field. It is therefore vital to the book’s mission that its content be open access. Linguistics as a field remains behind many others as far as data management and accessibility strategies. The problem is particularly acute in the subfield of language acquisition, where international linguistic sound files are needed for reference. Linguists' concerns are very much tied to amount of information accumulated by individual researchers over the years that remains fragmented and inaccessible to the larger community. These concerns are shared by other fields, but linguistics to date has seen few efforts at addressing them. This collection, undertaken by a range of leading experts in the field, represents a big step forward. Its international scope and interdisciplinary combination of scholars/librarians/data consultants will provide an important contribution to the field

Ensuring that research data are accessible, sharable, and re-usable over time is increasingly becoming an essential task for researchers and research infrastructure institutions. Some reasons for this development include the following: - research data are documented and could therefore be validated - research data could be the basis for new research questions - research data could be re-analyzed by using innovative digital methods - research data could be used by other disciplines Therefore, it is essential that research data are curated, which means they are kept accessible and interpretable over time. In Germany, a baseline study was undertaken analyzing the situation in eleven research disciplines in 2012. The results were then published in a German-language edition.
