Co-Nanomet: Co-ordination of Nanometrology in Europe
Nanometrology is a subfield of metrology, concerned with the science of measurement at the nanoscale level. Today’s global economy depends on reliable measurements and tests, which are trusted and accepted internationally. It must provide the ability to measure in three dimensions with atomic resolution over large areas. For industrial application this must also be achieved at a suitable speed/throughput. Measurements in the nanometre range should be traceable back to internationally accepted units of measurement (e.g. of length, angle, quantity of matter, and force). This requires common, validated measurement methods, calibrated scientific instrumentation as well as qualified reference samples. In some areas, even a common vocabulary needs to be defined. A traceability chain for the required measurements in the nm range has been established in only a few special cases. A common strategy for European nanometrology has been defined, as captured herein, such that future nanometrology development in Europe may build out from our many current strengths. In this way, European nanotechnology will be supported to reach its full and most exciting potential. As a strategic guidance, this document contains a vision for European nanometrology 2020; future goals and research needs, building out from an evaluation of the status of science and technology in 2010. It incorporates concepts for the acceleration of European nanometrology, in support of the effective commercial exploitation of emerging nanotechnologies. The field of nanotechnology covers a breadth of disciplines, each of which has specific and varying metrological needs. To this end, a set of four core technology fields or priority themes (Engineered Nanoparticles, Nanobiotechnology, Thin Films and Structured Surfaces and Modelling & Simulation) are the focus of this review. Each represents an area within which rapid scientific development during the last decade has seen corresponding growth in or towards commercial exploitation routes.
This document was compiled under the European Commission Framework Programme 7 project, Co-Nanomet. It has drawn together input from industry, research institutes, (national) metrology institutes, regulatory and standardisation bodies across Europe. Through the common work of the partners and all those interested parties who have contributed, it represents a significant collaborative European effort in this important field. In the next decade, nanotechnology can be expected to approach maturity, as a major enabling technological discipline with widespread application.
This document provides a guide to the many bodies across Europe in their activities or responsibilities in the field of nanotechnology and related measurement requirements. It will support the commercial exploitation of nanotechnology, as it transitions through this next exciting decade

One of the ways we recognize our faculty at the University of New Mexico is through this annual publication which highlights our faculty\u27s scholarly and creative activities and achievements and serves as a compendium of UNM faculty efforts during the 1997 calendar year. Faculty Publications and Creative Works strives to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University\u27s laboratories, studios and classrooms. We believe that the communication of individual research is a significant method of sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately inspiring the birth of new of ideas. In support of this, UNM faculty during 1997 produced over 2,770 works, including 2,398 scholarly papers and articles, 72 books, 63 book chapters, 82 reviews, 151 creative works and 4 patents. We are proud of the accomplishments of our faculty which are in part reflected in this book, which illustrates the diversity of intellectual pursuits in support of research and education at the University of New Mexico. Technology needs assessment of an atmospheric observation system for tropospheric research missions, part 1
The technology advancements needed to implement the atmospheric observation satellite systems for air quality research were identified. Tropospheric measurements are considered. The measurements and sensors are based on a model of knowledge objectives in atmospheric science. A set of potential missions and attendant spacecraft and sensors is postulated. The results show that the predominant technology needs will be in passive and active sensors for accurate and frequent global measurements of trace gas concentration profiles
Strengthening Europe's Capability in Biological Ocean Observations
This publication is primarily aimed at stakeholders involved in ocean observing, spanning diverse roles from commissioning,
managing, funding and coordinating, to developing, implementing, or advising on, ocean observation programmes.
Such programmes will have strategic and policy drivers but their main purpose may vary from predominantly researchdriven
scientific purposes to environmental monitoring for providing data and reporting to legally-binding regulations or
directives. The main focus is on European capabilities but set in a global context with the various actors spanning a variety
of geographical scales from national to regional and European. Key stakeholder organizations include environmental or
other agencies; marine research institutions, their researchers and operators; international and regional ocean observing
initiatives and programmes; national, regional and European policy makers and their advisors; national stations for
observations; etc.). It will also be of interest to the wider marine and maritime research and policy community.
The main aim of the publication is to increase the relevance of current (and future) European biological ocean observation
capacity to strengthen global efforts towards our understanding of the ocean and enhance marine biodiversity
conservation, for maintaining a healthy ocean for healthy societies.
This document explains why biological ocean observations are needed to assess progress against national and international
conservation targets, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Blue Growth agenda and to contribute to key EU
directives including the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). To achieve this, the publication highlights the need
of biological ocean observations to reflect clearly defined hypotheses about potential causes of change, including the
combined impacts of local and global drivers, and to support the management of our impacts on the ocean. Additionally,
it calls for flexible biological ocean observing programmes to capture the relevant drivers operating at multiple spatial
scales, by networking and integration of ongoing monitoring programmes, methodological standardization and
appropriate policies of data integration and dissemination. It then presents key variables, elements and information
products to inform on the status and trends of marine biodiversity

Optically Induced Nanostructures
Nanostructuring of materials is a task at the heart of many modern disciplines in mechanical engineering, as well as optics, electronics, and the life sciences. This book includes an introduction to the relevant nonlinear optical processes associated with very short laser pulses for the generation of structures far below the classical optical diffraction limit of about 200 nanometers as well as coverage of state-of-the-art technical and biomedical applications. These applications include silicon and glass wafer processing, production of nanowires, laser transfection and cell reprogramming, optical cleaning, surface treatments of implants, nanowires, 3D nanoprinting, STED lithography, friction modification, and integrated optics. The book highlights also the use of modern femtosecond laser microscopes and nanoscopes as novel nanoprocessing tools
