    An Improved Approach to Identifying Key Classes in Weighted Software Network

    To help the newcomers understand a software system better during its development, the key classes are in general given priority to be focused on as soon as possible. There are numerous measures that have been proposed to identify key nodes in a network. As a metric successfully applied to evaluate the productivity of a scholar, little is known about whether h-index is suitable to identify the key classes in weighted software network. In this paper, we introduced four h-index variants to identify key classes on three open-source software projects (i.e., Tomcat, Ant, and JUNG) and validated the feasibility of proposed measures by comparing them with existing centrality measures. The results show that the measures proposed not only are able to identify the key classes but also perform better than some commonly used centrality measures (the improvement is at least 0.215). In addition, the finding suggests that mE-Weight defined by the weight of a node’s top k edges performs best as a whole

    As the opioid epidemic lingers on across the country, many areas have set up harm reduction strategies such as needle exchange programs (NEPs) to combat the long-term consequences of injection drug use (IDU). Males and females face a plethora of health issues associated with injection drug use such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C. While males comprise the largest portion of the injection drug use population, most research is gender neutral, which makes it difficult to discern issues specifically related to females inhibiting our ability to design interventions and procedures targeted to address their needs. Females require varying reproductive health needs, prenatal healthcare services and childcare. The research explores service provider perspectives on facilitators and barriers to needle exchange program participation by females who inject drugs. The study is descriptive and exploratory in nature using survey methodology. Data was collected from mailed surveys to needle exchange program staff from Kentucky and the seven bordering states (Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia). Exchange theory, the health belief model and feminist theory and intersectionality were used as the theoretical frameworks to explain human behavior and what motivates people who inject drugs to utilize needle exchange programs. Determining the facilitators and barriers females face in accessing needle exchange programs will allow for revisions in service delivery and policy changes to promote increased utilization of services by females who inject drugs

    Embodiment, altered perception and comfort after stroke

    After stroke, changes to body perception are common. However, little is known about what these disturbed perceptions feel like to the stroke survivor. This programme of work used embodiment theory to explore stroke survivors’ experiences of altered body perception and whether these perceptions were uncomfortable from a biopsychosocial perspective. It explored whether participants indicated a need for clinical interventions and the feasibility of using assessment tools to collate information about the body. A range of methodologies were used. A scoping review of the literature identified 28 studies exploring first-person accounts of altered body perception. Stroke survivors described the body across conditions as strange and unfamiliar; reflecting a changed awareness and means of relating to the body. Concurrently, a phenomenological study was conducted. A purposive sample of 16 stroke survivors able to communicate verbally, at least six-months post-stroke and experiencing motor and sensory impairments, were selected. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Participants described uncomfortable altered perceptions. The body did not exist, was hindered by strange perceptions and uncontrollable. The body was isolated, but participants were hopeful for improvement. Altered perceptions were difficult to comprehend and describe. From this, a feasibility and acceptability study explored the use of three assessment tools to communicate the altered body. Ten participants experiencing including a proportion with communication problems, were purposively selected. Participants wanted to communicate the experience of altered body perception and discomfort to health professionals and their preferred visual tools to achieve this. Stroke causes a complex sense of physical and psychosocial disembodiment, which is uncomfortable and of concern to survivors. Embodiment research suggests these domains may interact with one another. Clinical recognition and support to communicate altered body perception and discomfort from a holistic perspective may elucidate the multimodal experience of altered perceptions and foster new approaches for rehabilitation

    Generating intelligent tutoring systems for teaching reading: combining phonological awareness and thematic approaches

    The objective of this thesis is to investigate the use of computers with artificial intelligence methods for the teaching of basic literacy skills to be applied eventually to the teaching of illiterate adults in Brazil.In its development many issues related to adult education have been considered, and two very significant approaches to the teaching of reading were focused on in detail: Phonological Awareness (PA) and Generative Themes. After being excluded from literacy curricula for a long time during the ascendancy of the "Whole Word" approaches, activities for the development of phonological awareness are currently being accepted as fundamental for teaching reading, and are being incorporated in most English literacy programmes. Generative Themes, in turn, were first introduced in Brazil in a massive programme for teaching reading to adults, and have since then been used successfully in a number of developing countries for the same purpose. However, these two approaches are apparently conflicting in their principles and emphasis, for the first (PA) is generally centred on the technical aspects of phonology, based on well controlled experiments and research, whereas the second is socially inspired and focused mainly on meaning and social relationships.The main question addressed in this research, consequently, is whether these two apparently conflicting approaches could be combined to create a method that would be technically PA oriented but at the same time could concentrate on meaning by using thematic vocabularies as stimuli for teaching. Would it be possible to find words to illustrate all the phonological features with which a PA method deals using a thematic vocabulary?To answer this question diverse concepts, languages and tools have been developed as part of this research, in order to allow the selection of thematic vocabularies, the description of PA curricula, the distribution of thematic words across PA curricula, the description of teaching activities and the definition of the teaching strategy rules to orient the teaching sequence.The resultant vocabularies have been evaluated and the outcomes of the research have been assessed by literacy experts. A prototype system for delivering experimental teaching activities through the Internet has also been developed and demonstrated

    Machinic Eyes: New and Post-Digital Aesthetics, Surveillance, and Resistance

    This work concerns the rise of the New Aesthetic, an art project developed by James Bridle in 2012. The New Aesthetic, as envisioned by Bridle, was chiefly concerned with the overlapping of physical and digital realities through both the artifacts produced by this overlapping and the systems involved therein. I introduce the advent of the New Aesthetic and present the major criticisms: the lack of a robust theoretical and scholarly framework, the lack of a historical framework, the privileging of artifacts over systems as new Aesthetic, and the fragmented scholarly outlook on the New Aesthetic. Upon further examination, I discovered that the New Aesthetic is less of an art project but a metaphor for a global surveillance apparatus that is the result of clandestine partnerships between multinational technology corporations and intelligence agencies associated the Five Eyes consortium. In this dissertation, I critique the New Aesthetic from a scholarly viewpoint, offer a historical precedent of how the New Aesthetic came to be from cultural and technological perspectives, examine the rise of the global surveillance apparatus within the New Aesthetic, and offer ideas of how to resist surveillance as a result of our reliance upon computational technologies
