    Letters from the War of Ecosystems – An Analysis of Independent Software Vendors in Mobile Application Marketplaces

    The recent emergence of a new generation of mobile application marketplaces has changed the business in the mobile ecosystems. The marketplaces have gathered over a million applications by hundreds of thousands of application developers and publishers. Thus, software ecosystems—consisting of developers, consumers and the orchestrator—have emerged as a part of the mobile ecosystem. This dissertation addresses the new challenges faced by mobile application developers in the new ecosystems through empirical methods. By using the theories of two-sided markets and business ecosystems as the basis, the thesis assesses monetization and value creation in the market as well as the impact of electronic Word-of-Mouth (eWOM) and developer multihoming— i. e. contributing for more than one platform—in the ecosystems. The data for the study was collected with web crawling from the three biggest marketplaces: Apple App Store, Google Play and Windows Phone Store. The dissertation consists of six individual articles. The results of the studies show a gap in monetization among the studied applications, while a majority of applications are produced by small or micro-enterprises. The study finds only weak support for the impact of eWOM on the sales of an application in the studied ecosystem. Finally, the study reveals a clear difference in the multi-homing rates between the top application developers and the rest. This has, as discussed in the thesis, an impact on the future market analyses—it seems that the smart device market can sustain several parallel application marketplaces.Muutama vuosi sitten julkistetut uuden sukupolven mobiilisovellusten kauppapaikat ovat muuttaneet mobiiliekosysteemien liiketoimintadynamiikkaa. Nämä uudet markkinapaikat ovat jo onnistuneet houkuttelemaan yli miljoona sovellusta sadoilta tuhansilta ohjelmistokehittäjiltä. Nämä kehittäjät yhdessä markkinapaikan organisoijan sekä loppukäyttäjien kanssa ovat muodostaneet ohjelmistoekosysteemin osaksi laajempaa mobiiliekosysteemiä. Tässä väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan mobiilisovellusten kehittäjien uudenlaisilla kauppapaikoilla kohtaamia haasteita empiiristen tutkimusmenetelmien kautta. Väitöskirjassa arvioidaan sovellusten monetisaatiota ja arvonluontia sekä verkon asiakasarviointien (engl. electronicWord-of-Mouth, eWOM) ja kehittäjien moniliittymisen (engl. multi-homing) — kehittäjä on sitoutunut useammalle kuin yhdelle ekosysteemille — vaikutuksia ekosysteemissä. Työn teoreettinen tausta rakentuu kaksipuolisten markkinapaikkojen ja liiketoimintaekosysteemien päälle. Tutkimuksen aineisto on kerätty kolmelta suurimmalta mobiilisovellusmarkkinapaikalta: Apple App Storesta, Google Playstä ja Windows Phone Storesta. Tämä artikkeliväitöskirja koostuu kuudesta itsenäisestä tutkimuskäsikirjoituksesta. Artikkelien tulokset osoittavat puutteita monetisaatiossa tutkittujen sovellusten joukossa. Merkittävä osa tarkastelluista sovelluksista on pienten yritysten tai yksittäisten kehittäjien julkaisemia. Tutkimuksessa löydettiin vain heikkoa tukea eWOM:in positiiviselle vaikutukselle sovellusten myyntimäärissä. Työssä myös osoitetaan merkittävä ero menestyneimpien sovelluskehittäjien sekä muiden kehittäjien moniliittymiskäyttäytymisen välillä. Tällä havainnolla on merkitystä tuleville markkina-analyyseille ja sen vaikutuksia on käsitelty työssä.     Cloud Services Brokerage for Mobile Ubiquitous Computing

    Recently, companies are adopting Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) to efficiently deliver enterprise services to users (or consumers) on their personalized devices. MCC is the facilitation of mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and smart watches) to access virtualized services such as software applications, servers, storage, and network services over the Internet. With the advancement and diversity of the mobile landscape, there has been a growing trend in consumer attitude where a single user owns multiple mobile devices. This paradigm of supporting a single user or consumer to access multiple services from n-devices is referred to as the Ubiquitous Cloud Computing (UCC) or the Personal Cloud Computing. In the UCC era, consumers expect to have application and data consistency across their multiple devices and in real time. However, this expectation can be hindered by the intermittent loss of connectivity in wireless networks, user mobility, and peak load demands. Hence, this dissertation presents an architectural framework called, Cloud Services Brokerage for Mobile Ubiquitous Cloud Computing (CSB-UCC), which ensures soft real-time and reliable services consumption on multiple devices of users. The CSB-UCC acts as an application middleware broker that connects the n-devices of users to the multi-cloud services. The designed system determines the multi-cloud services based on the user's subscriptions and the n-devices are determined through device registration on the broker. The preliminary evaluations of the designed system shows that the following are achieved: 1) high scalability through the adoption of a distributed architecture of the brokerage service, 2) providing soft real-time application synchronization for consistent user experience through an enhanced mobile-to-cloud proximity-based access technique, 3) reliable error recovery from system failure through transactional services re-assignment to active nodes, and 4) transparent audit trail through access-level and context-centric provenance

    FROM MICRO BEHAVIORS TO MACRO EFFECTS - AGENT BASED MODELING OF ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS SPREAD AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE CONSUMPTION OF A LIMITED RESOURCE

    This research starts from an overview of the many aspects that link ICT - and related activities - to the environment, with particular reference to software development. We introduce an interdisciplinary framework to delineate boundaries, overlaps, and relations between different areas of science that underlie the interactions outlined. We then identified some conceptual tools that allow us to introduce the key concept of the research, namely environmental awareness and the mechanisms of its spread. The concepts that are derived from this interdisciplinary and intersectorial excursus are mainly those of social influence in the spread of ideas, the formation of social norms, agent based modeling, the emergence of collective phenomena from individual behavior, and of the socio-technical systems. The methodological approach followed here is based on the observation that while most people generally agree that environmental sustainability is a general objective worth achieving, at the specific level the consumption of finite resources is not sustainable. This leads to the conclusion that any behavioral change towards sustainability must be based on environmental awareness at the individual, collective, and institutional level. The research objectives consisted in identifying the underlying mechanisms of human behaviours in limited resource consumption, in order to define a conceptual model able not only to describe them but also to analyze if and when scenarios of sustainable behavior may be emerging. The operating result is an agent-based model (ABM) that simulates how environmental awareness spreads in a system whose unsustainable consumption should be reduced and how both social influence and empowering technology play a role in determining social norms of sustainability. The examples given relate mainly to the use of energy, but the conceptual model is not limited to that resource. SAM4SN (Spread of Awareness Model for Social Norm) is an ABM that may allow other researchers to conduct experiments in socio-technical innovation for environmental goals and to understand the responsibilities and consequences of human behavior on environmental sustainability in various institutions, including informal ones. One of the main findings of the research is the ability of the model to provide some monitoring indicators able to foresee if the system will achieve the goal of reducing the limited resource, i.e. if it will reach sustainability. Such indicators, with the SAM4SN model, can be usefull tools in energy policy making

    Supporting software processes analysis and decision-making using provenance data

    Data provenance can be defined as the description of the origins of a piece of data and the process by which it arrived in a database. Provenance has been successfully used in health sciences, chemical industries, and scientific computing, considering that these areas require a comprehensive traceability mechanism. Moreover, companies have been increasing the amount of data they collect from their systems and processes, considering the dropping cost of memory and storage technologies in the last years. Thus, this thesis investigates if the use of provenance models and techniques can support software processes execution analysis and data-driven decision-making, considering the increasing availability of process data provided by companies. A provenance model for software processes was developed and evaluated by experts in process and provenance area, in addition to an approach for capturing, storing, inferencing of implicit information, and visualization to software process provenance data. In addition, a case study using data from industry’s processes was conducted to evaluate the approach, with a discussion about several specific analysis and data-driven decision-making possibilities.Proveniência de dados é definida como a descrição da origem de um dado e o processo pelo qual este passou até chegar ao seu estado atual. Proveniência de dados tem sido usada com sucesso em domínios como ciências da saúde, indústrias químicas e computação científica, considerando que essas áreas exigem um mecanismo abrangente de rastreabilidade. Por outro lado, as empresas vêm aumentando a quantidade de dados que coletam de seus sistemas e processos, considerando a diminuição no custo das tecnologias de memória e armazenamento nos últimos anos. Assim, esta tese investiga se o uso de modelos e técnicas de proveniência é capaz de apoiar a análise da execução de processos de software e a tomada de decisões baseada em dados, considerando a disponibilização cada vez maior de dados relativos a processos pelas empresas. Um modelo de proveniência para processos de software foi desenvolvido e avaliado por especialistas em processos e proveniência, além de uma abordagem e ferramental de apoio para captura, armazenamento, inferência de novas informações e posterior análise e visualização dos dados de proveniência de processos. Um estudo de caso utilizando dados de processos da indústria foi conduzido para avaliação da abordagem e discussão de possibilidades distintas para análise e tomada de decisão orientada por estes dados

    Urban food strategies in Central and Eastern Europe: what's specific and what's at stake?

    Integrating a larger set of instruments into Rural Development Programmes implied an increasing focus on monitoring and evaluation. Against the highly diversified experience with regard to implementation of policy instruments the Common Monitoring and Evaluation Framework has been set up by the EU Commission as a strategic and streamlined method of evaluating programmes’ impacts. Its indicator-based approach mainly reflects the concept of a linear, measure-based intervention logic that falls short of the true nature of RDP operation and impact capacity on rural changes. Besides the different phases of the policy process, i.e. policy design, delivery and evaluation, the regional context with its specific set of challenges and opportunities seems critical to the understanding and improvement of programme performance. In particular the role of local actors can hardly be grasped by quantitative indicators alone, but has to be addressed by assessing processes of social innovation. This shift in the evaluation focus underpins the need to take account of regional implementation specificities and processes of social innovation as decisive elements for programme performance.
