    Sliding Mode Control for Trajectory Tracking of a Non-holonomic Mobile Robot using Adaptive Neural Networks

    In this work a sliding mode control method for a non-holonomic mobile robot using an adaptive neural network is proposed. Due to this property and restricted mobility, the trajectory tracking of this system has been one of the research topics for the last ten years. The proposed control structure combines a feedback linearization model, based on a nominal kinematic model, and a practical design that combines an indirect neural adaptation technique with sliding mode control to compensate for the dynamics of the robot. A neural sliding mode controller is used to approximate the equivalent control in the neighbourhood of the sliding manifold, using an online adaptation scheme. A sliding control is appended to ensure that the neural sliding mode control can achieve a stable closed-loop system for the trajectory-tracking control of a mobile robot with unknown non-linear dynamics. Also, the proposed control technique can reduce the steady-state error using the online adaptive neural network with sliding mode control; the design is based on Lyapunov’s theory.     Intelligent controllers for velocity tracking of two wheeled inverted pendulum mobile robot

    Velocity tracking is one of the important objectives of vehicle, machines and mobile robots. A two wheeled inverted pendulum (TWIP) is a class of mobile robot that is open loop unstable with high nonlinearities which makes it difficult to control its velocity because of its nature of pitch falling if left unattended. In this work, three soft computing techniques were proposed to track a desired velocity of the TWIP. Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC), Neural Network Inverse Model control (NN) and an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) were designed and simulated on the TWIP model. All the three controllers have shown practically good performance in tracking the desired speed and keeping the robot in upright position and ANFIS has shown slightly better performance than FLC, while NN consumes more energy

The controller that is commonly applied by the researchers is mostly adaptive and non-linear controllers. The paper also explores the subject of study or system used during the research which normally employs multi-robot, multi-agent, space flying, reconfigurable system, multi-legs system or unmanned system.     Path Tracking and Position Control of Nonholonomic Differential Drive Wheeled Mobile Robot

    Differential drive wheeled mobile robot (DDWMR) is one example of a robot with a constrained movement, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), and nonlinear system. Designing a low resource position and heading controller using linear MIMO methods such as LQR became a problem because of the linearization of robot dynamics at zero value. One of the solutions is to design a MIMO controller using a Single Input Single Output (SISO) controller. This work design a controller using PID for DDWMR Jetbot and selects the best feedback gain using different scenarios. The designed controller manipulates both motors by using calculated control signal to achieve a complex task such as path tracking with robot position in x-Axis, y-Axis, and heading angle as the feedback. The priority between position and heading angle can be adjusted by changing three feedback gains. The controller was tested, and the best gain was selected using Integral Absolute Error (IAE) metrics in a path tracking task with four different path shapes. The proposed methods can track square, circle, and two types of infinity shape paths, with the less well-formed shape being the four edges square path

    Fault detection in trajectory tracking of wheeled mobile robots

    The problem of fault detection in nonlinear systems with application to trajectory tracking of nonholonomic wheeled mobile robots (WMRs) is addressed in this thesis. For the considered application, a nonholonomic wheeled mobile robot--having nonlinear kinematics--is required to follow a predefined smooth trajectory (in the absence of obstacles in the environment). This goal has to be accomplished despite the presence of faults that may occur in two of its major subsystems which are vital for navigation, namely the driving subsystem and the steering subsystem. These faults are assumed to be caused by actuator faults in either of these two subsystems. The problem addressed here is to detect the presence of faults and to determine the subsystem which has been affected by these faults. Toward this end, two different fault detection approaches are proposed and investigated. The first approach is based on system identification through Extended Kalman Filters (EKF) whereas the second one is based on system identification via artificial neural networks. In the former approach a novel method for residual generation is proposed while in the latter by utilizing the neural network's formal stability properties the desired performance can be guaranteed. Each of the proposed fault detection methods is studied subject to two different kinds of controllers (namely a dynamic linear controller and a dynamic feedback linearization based controller) and two different types of actuator faults (namely the Loss-of-Effectiveness fault and Locked-In-Place fault). In this way, the impact of the controller strategy on the fault detection approach is also investigated and evaluated

    A layered fuzzy logic controller for nonholonomic car-like robot

    A system for real time navigation of a nonholonomic car-like robot in a dynamic environment consists of two layers is described: a Sugeno-type fuzzy motion planner; and a modified proportional navigation based fuzzy controller. The system philosophy is inspired by human routing when moving between obstacles based on visual information including right and left views to identify the next step to the goal. A Sugeno-type fuzzy motion planner of four inputs one output is introduced to give a clear direction to the robot controller. The second stage is a modified proportional navigation based fuzzy controller based on the proportional navigation guidance law and able to optimize the robot's behavior in real time, i.e. to avoid stationary and moving obstacles in its local environment obeying kinematics constraints. The system has an intelligent combination of two behaviors to cope with obstacle avoidance as well as approaching a target using a proportional navigation path. The system was simulated and tested on different environments with various obstacle distributions. The simulation reveals that the system gives good results for various simple environments

    Embedded system for motion control of an omnidirectional mobile robot

    In this paper, an embedded system for motion control of omnidirectional mobile robots is presented. An omnidirectional mobile robot is a type of holonomic robots. It can move simultaneously and independently in translation and rotation. The RoboCup small-size league, a robotic soccer competition, is chosen as the research platform in this paper. The first part of this research is to design and implement an embedded system that can communicate with a remote server using a wireless link, and execute received commands. Second, a fuzzy-Tuned proportional-integral (PI) path planner and a related low-level controller are proposed to attain optimal input for driving a linear discrete dynamic model of the omnidirectional mobile robot. To fit the planning requirements and avoid slippage, velocity, and acceleration filters are also employed. In particular, low-level optimal controllers, such as a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for multiple-input-multiple-output acceleration and deceleration of velocity are investigated, where an LQR controller is running on the robot with feedback from motor encoders or sensors. Simultaneously, a fuzzy adaptive PI is used as a high-level controller for position monitoring, where an appropriate vision system is used as a source of position feedback. A key contribution presented in this research is an improvement in the combined fuzzy-PI LQR controller over a traditional PI controller. Moreover, the efficiency of the proposed approach and PI controller are also discussed. Simulation and experimental evaluations are conducted with and without external disturbance. An optimal result to decrease the variances between the target trajectory and the actual output is delivered by the onboard regulator controller in this paper. The modeling and experimental results confirm the claim that utilizing the new approach in trajectory-planning controllers results in more precise motion of four-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robots. 2018 IEEE.Scopu
