Towards a task model for mobile learning: a dialectical approach

Our approach to understanding mobile learning begins by describing a dialectical approach to the development and presentation of a task model using the socio-cognitive engineering design method. This analysis synthesises relevant theoretical approaches. We then examine two field studies which feed into the development of the task model

Vietnam CDT Gap Analysis and Partnership Appraisal

-From October 2017 to February 2018, USAID Oceans, through a team of in-country consultants and international experts, conducted a review of Vietnam’s legal frameworks, management systems, and fisheries operations to assess current catch documentation and traceability protocols and capabilities, the current certification scheme being used in Vietnam’s seafood industry, and good practices being used by Vietnam’s tuna fisheries that can be leveraged for system implementation. From these findings, this appraisal presents key findings and recommendations, based upon consideration of the existing drivers towards eCDT from socio-economic, policy, and technology perspectives, and complemented with a rapid assessment of potential private sector partners to support eCDT implementation. Finally, to support its recommendations, USAID Oceans also presents a road map and eCDTS implementation plan, both in the short and long term

Modeling the user state for context-aware spoken interaction in ambient assisted living

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) systems must provide adapted services easily accessible by a wide variety of users. This can only be possible if the communication between the user and the system is carried out through an interface that is simple, rapid, effective, and robust. Natural language interfaces such as dialog systems fulfill these requisites, as they are based on a spoken conversation that resembles human communication. In this paper, we enhance systems interacting in AAL domains by means of incorporating context-aware conversational agents that consider the external context of the interaction and predict the user's state. The user's state is built on the basis of their emotional state and intention, and it is recognized by means of a module conceived as an intermediate phase between natural language understanding and dialog management in the architecture of the conversational agent. This prediction, carried out for each user turn in the dialog, makes it possible to adapt the system dynamically to the user's needs. We have evaluated our proposal developing a context-aware system adapted to patients suffering from chronic pulmonary diseases, and provide a detailed discussion of the positive influence of our proposal in the success of the interaction, the information and services provided, as well as the perceived quality.This work was supported in part by Projects MINECO TEC2012-37832-C02-01, CICYT TEC2011-28626-C02- 02, CAM CONTEXTS (S2009/TIC-1485

Identification of Outer Continental Shelf Renewable Energy Space-Use Conflicts and Analysis of Potential Mitigation Measures

The ocean accommodates a wide variety of uses that are separated by time of day, season, location, and zones. Conflict can and does occur, however, when two or more groups wish to use the same space at the same time in an exclusive manner. The potential for conflict is well known and the management of ocean space and resources has been, and is being, addressed by a number of State, regional, and Federal organizations, including, among others, coastal zone management agencies, state task forces, and regional fisheries management councils. However, with new and emerging uses of the ocean, such as aquaculture and offshore renewable energy, comes the potential for new types of space-use conflicts in ocean waters. In recent years, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) (formerly the Minerals Management Service [MMS]) has examined ocean space-use conflicts and mitigation strategies in the context of offshore oil and gas exploration and production and sand and gravel dredging, activities that are both subject to BOEM regulation and oversight. BOEM now has authority to issue leases on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) for renewable energy projects, but seeks additional information on potential conflicts between existing uses of the ocean environment and this new form of activity. The broad purpose of this study was to begin to fill this gap by (1) identifying potential spaceuse conflicts between OCS renewable energy development and other uses of the ocean environment, and (2) recommending measures that BOEM can implement in order to promote avoidance or mitigation of such conflicts, thereby facilitating responsible and efficient development of OCS renewable energy resources. The result is a document intended to serve as a desktop resource that BOEM can use to inform its decision making as the agency carries out its statutory and regulatory responsibilities

Social networks feed the food supplements shadow market

Purpose: The paper investigates the role of social networks in the millennials’ decision-making process of illegal and unnotified food supplements purchase. The connections and interactions that (co) produce information are studied with a holistic perspective of social sustainability as a development driver of business model innovation. Design/methodology/approach: An exploratory qualitative multiple analysis study was conducted in two consecutive phases. Data from 23 semi-structured individual interviews were collected, followed by a netnographic analysis of the Facebook virtual community. Findings: The results show that the decision-making process does not develop following the traditional sequence, as social networks modify the wellness meaning creation process and reduce risk perception. Moreover, social networks introduce the use of similar experiences of others and online information and emotional support on unethical and unhealthy behavior. Research limitations/implications: Due to the application to a social network, the results should be understood within this context. Future studies would benefit by expanding the target and the range of social networks explored. Practical implications: The official information quality control, as a prerogative of public and professional health stakeholders, and the medialization of medicalization, contribute to the conscious development of their wellness meanings and values. Originality/value: This work represents one of the first attempts to investigate resources integration through social networks in the pre-purchase decision-making process of unnotified and illegal food supplements. Unethical and unhealthy behavior develops through the interaction of actors, firms, influencers and individuals over social networks

Enhancing the experience of remote interaction for preschool children and their traveling parents

Business traveling - the kind of traveling that tends to separate family members - is still a very common phenomenon and keeps making it difficult for family members to maintain a feeling of connectedness. Different time zones and contexts are some of many factors that make "being together" more challenging when physically apart. Modern communication technologies, such as phones and IM clients, improve communication, but seldom achieve the same level of connectedness and awareness that face-to-face communication does. In addition, when it comes to young children, these communication technologies may not even be an option. This thesis presents a theoretical and practical design project that addresses these travel-related issues. The overall goal of the project has been to (1) define a set of design principles for this type of interaction by studying existing psychology and technology research and literature, as well as by interviewing families, to (2) develop a system that, on the basis of the defined principles, makes remote communication and sharing of experiences easier and more meaningful to preschool children and their traveling parents, and to (3) evaluate the system with real end-users in order to improve the user experience. The outcome of the project is "Globetoddler", a mobile-tangible communication platform, designed explicitly to reconcile differences in both location and time, without compromising the specific needs of the individual users.by Lisa Paulina Modlitba.S.M
