    The Astro-WISE approach to quality control for astronomical data

    We present a novel approach to quality control during the processing of astronomical data. Quality control in the Astro-WISE Information System is integral to all aspects of data handing and provides transparent access to quality estimators for all stages of data reduction from the raw image to the final catalog. The implementation of quality control mechanisms relies on the core features in this Astro-WISE Environment (AWE): an object-oriented framework, full data lineage, and both forward and backward chaining. Quality control information can be accessed via the command-line awe-prompt and the web-based Quality-WISE service. The quality control system is described and qualified using archive data from the 8-CCD Wide Field Imager (WFI) instrument (http://www.eso.org/lasilla/instruments/wfi/) on the 2.2-m MPG/ESO telescope at La Silla and (pre-)survey data from the 32-CCD OmegaCAM instrument (http://www.astro-wise.org/~omegacam/) on the VST telescope at Paranal.Comment: Accepted for publication in topical issue of Experimental Astronomy on Astro-WISE information syste

    Survey on Quality of Observation within Sensor Web Systems

    The Sensor Web vision refers to the addition of a middleware layer between sensors and applications. To bridge the gap between these two layers, Sensor Web systems must deal with heterogeneous sources, which produce heterogeneous observations of disparate quality. Managing such diversity at the application level can be complex and requires high levels of expertise from application developers. Moreover, as an information-centric system, any Sensor Web should provide support for Quality of Observation (QoO) requirements. In practice, however, only few Sensor Webs provide satisfying QoO support and are able to deliver high-quality observations to end consumers in a specific manner. This survey aims to study why and how observation quality should be addressed in Sensor Webs. It proposes three original contributions. First, it provides important insights into quality dimensions and proposes to use the QoO notion to deal with information quality within Sensor Webs. Second, it proposes a QoO-oriented review of 29 Sensor Web solutions developed between 2003 and 2016, as well as a custom taxonomy to characterise some of their features from a QoO perspective. Finally, it draws four major requirements required to build future adaptive and QoO-aware Sensor Web solutions

    Web-based management information system of transaction data with mobile features was needed by employees of PT. Yasiga Sarana Utama, especially mine division. The problems that frequently occur are some documents are created with the manual method, data storage is conducted using Microsoft Excel and duplication. Damage and loss of data have been solved with Web-based management information system of transaction data. In addition, the field employees who have activities outside of the Office get ease in storing and archiving the data using a mobile application integrated with transaction data management information systems. Management information system of transaction data was built using the waterfall method which consisted of the analysis, design, coding or implementing, and testing. In the early stages of development, the company business processes were studied through literatures, and then the company requirements were analyzed using use case diagrams, class diagrams, sequence diagrams, state chart diagrams, and user interface design. The next phase was the design of the system by designing a database using the ERdiagrams. Programming code on the implementation phase was conducted using PHP PDO with object-oriented programming, Bootstrap PostgreSQL database as an additional aesthetic applications, and PhoneGap to generate mobile applications. Application testing was conducted using black box testing. The results of the implementation showed the expected output and in accordance with existing business processes

    A framework for goal-oriented discovery of resources in the RESTful architecture

    One of the challenges facing the current web is the efficient use of all the available information. The Web 2.0 phenomenon has favored the creation of contents by average users, and thus the amount of information that can be found for diverse topics has grown exponentially in the last years. Initiatives such as linked data are helping to build the Semantic Web, in which a set of standards are proposed for the exchange of data among heterogeneous systems. However, these standards are sometimes not used, and there are still plenty of websites that require naive techniques to discover their contents and services. This paper proposes an integrated framework for content and service discovery and extraction. The framework is divided into several layers where the discovery of contents and services is made in a representational stateless transfer system such as the web. It employs several web mining techniques as well as feature-oriented modeling for the discovery of cross-cutting features in web resources. The framework is used in a scenario of electronic newspapers. An intelligent agent crawls the web for related news, and uses services and visits links automatically according to its goal. This scenario illustrates how the discovery is made at different levels and how the use of semantics helps implement an agent that performs high-level tasks

    A Geographic Information System Framework for the Management of Sensor Deployments

    A prototype Geographic Information System (GIS) framework has been developed to map, manage, and monitor sensors with respect to other geographic features, including land base and in-plant features. The GIS framework supports geographic placement and subsequent discovery, query, and tasking of sensors in a network-centric environment using Web services. The framework couples the GIS feature placement logic of sensors with an extensible ontology which captures the capabilities, properties, protocols, integrity constraints, and other parameters of interest for a large variety of sensor types. The approach is significant in that custom, GIS-based interfaces can be rapidly developed via the integration of sensors and sensor networks into applications without having detailed knowledge of the sensors’ underlying device drivers by leveraging service-oriented computing infrastructure within the GIS framework

    The Web2 environment as a platform for making natural and cultural values accessible to potential and actual clients

    Services like tourism have to use the possibilities of modern advertising. In particular, these include the World Wide Web (WWW). This platform brings its products and services directly to the customers. To place the information about a region and its tourist offer in optimal manner requires exact definition of elements in the Web based tourist information system (WETIS) and their presentation. We discuss the elements and their integration in other services, the data structures and types, maps and their interactivity. Furthermore, we present tourism related data of selected Slovakian villages and cities. Finally, we give a report regarding our demonstration web page and future development. The usual tourist information on the web usually relates to the most interesting historical or cultural sights in the region and is marketing oriented. In this way the full image of history and beauty of the characteristic towns and villages is usually missed. Our intention was - in cooperation with the Geotourism students of the Institute if Geotourism - to map also these features of Eastern Slovakia and of the NE Carpathians. As the web is to serve mainly the tourist community, the map connects to useful information on various facilities available at the given locality. The detailed photo-documentation makes it possible e.g. also to see each traditional house. This is interesting as the number of these houses is decreasing. They are replaced by modern buildings, which lack the regional and local flavour.

    Integration of historical GIS data in a HBIM system

    The integration between BIM (Building Information Modeling) and GIS (Geographic Information System) is currently a highly debated research topic. However, the effective integration of the two workflows in a unique information system is still an open research field, especially when dealing with Cultural Heritage (CH). The paper describes an ongoing research on the development of a web information system able to integrate BIM and GIS data, with particular focus on the analysis of the historicized city and its main buildings over time. Three main aspects, in particular, are considered more relevant: (i) conceptual data organization to integrate GIS and BIM in a single environment; (ii) integration of data belonging to different historical periods for analyses over time (4D); (iii) integration into the system of datasets already structured in pre-existing HGIS and HBIM. Most (if not all) of the attributes must be linked with both 2D and 3D entities. The system should be queryable and with the possibility to edit the information regardless of the actual focus of the current user, either if he is more BIM or GIS oriented. This is one of the main requirement for the system not to be just a simple viewer of BIM and GIS data in a unique software environment. The system can manage, from a spatial point of view, different scales of detail, allowing the connection between data from the architectural scale to the territorial one and, from a temporal point of view, data belonging to different periods. All these features have been designed to meet, in particular, the requirements of CH and realize a Historical BIM-GIS system. Besides, the web architecture allows sharing information even between actors with different digital skills, without the need for specific software installed, and ensures portability and access from mobile devices

    CROFlora, a database application to handle the Croatian vascular flora

    CROFlora is a multi-user database application for species-oriented and specimen-oriented systematic and taxonomic work on Croatian flora. It is designed for dealing with all kinds of data that are commonly used in systematic botany and floristic work. CROFlora comprises several main modules: (1) taxonomy, (2) herbarium, (3) literature, (4) chorology and (5) related data, such as ecology and multimedia. CROFlora was built over a relational database. The database relies on the normalised data model, which is presented in the paper. Amongst other features, the client application provides the user with extended query by example (QBE) capabilities and with user-customised reports. The reports include taxon sheets, taxa checklists, herbarium labels, bibliography labels and other complex reports. The database can be connected to a geographical information system (GIS), which empowers easy production of distribution maps and other spatial analysis. The Web interface enables Internet searches
