    Feature extraction of the weak periodic signal of rolling element bearing’ early fault based on shift invariant sparse coding

    When fault such as pit failure arises in the rolling element bearing the vibration signal of which will take on periodic characteristics, and the abrupt failure of rotating machinery can be avoided effectively if the weak periodic characteristics of the early fault stage is extracted timely. However, the periodic characteristics of bearing’ early weak fault is hard to be extracted usually and the reasons can be boiled to as following: Firstly, the weak periodic signal of rolling element bearing’ early fault stage is buried by the strong background noise. Secondly, the weak fault cannot show the complete shock attenuation impulsive characteristic due to its weak energy, so the traditional wavelet transform would not work effectively if a proper wavelet basis function fitting for analyzing the impulsive characteristics is not selected. To solve the above two problems, a feature extraction method of the weak periodic signal of rolling element bearing’ early fault based on Shift Invariant Sparse Coding (SISC) originating from sparse representation is proposed in the paper. To capture the underlying structure of machinery fault signal, SICS provides an effective basis functions learning scheme by solving the flowing two convex optimization problems iteratively: 1) L1-regularized least squares problem. 2) L2-constrained least squares problem. The fault feature can be probably contained and extracted if optimal latent component is filtered among these basis functions. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified through the corresponding simulation and experiment

    This paper presents a comprehensive review of the developments made in rotating bearing fault diagnosis, a crucial component of a rotatory machine, during the past decade. A data-driven fault diagnosis framework consists of data acquisition, feature extraction/feature learning, and decision making based on shallow/deep learning algorithms. In this review paper, various signal processing techniques, classical machine learning approaches, and deep learning algorithms used for bearing fault diagnosis have been discussed. Moreover, highlights of the available public datasets that have been widely used in bearing fault diagnosis experiments, such as Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Paderborn University Bearing, PRONOSTIA, and Intelligent Maintenance Systems (IMS), are discussed in this paper.     Bearing incipient fault diagnosis based upon maximal spectral kurtosis TQWT and group sparsity total variation denoising approach

    Localized faults in rolling bearing tend to result in periodic shocks and thus arouse periodic responses in the vibration signal. In this paper, a novel fault diagnosis method based on maximal spectral kurtosis tunable Q-factor wavelet transformation (TQWT) and group sparsity total variation denoising (GS-TVD) is proposed to address the issue of bearing incipient failure. Firstly, the range of Q-factor was pre-selected according to the spectral distribution of impulse component, and bearing vibration signal was transformed by the TQWT method. Then, the spectral kurtosis of each scale transform coefficients was calculated, and the optimal Q-factor and decomposition scale can be selected according to the kurtosis maximum principle. In order to remove the interference components and high-frequency noise from the reconstructed vibration signal generated by inverse TQWT, the GS-TVD approach is employed, thus the cyclic periodicity characteristic and transient impulses can be detected obviously. The two cases experimental results indicate that the proposed technique is more effective and applicable for bearing incipient fault diagnosis compared with traditional method

    This reprint focuses on wear and fatigue analysis, the dynamic properties of coating surfaces in transmission systems, and non-destructive condition monitoring for the health management of transmission systems. Transmission systems play a vital role in various types of industrial structure, including wind turbines, vehicles, mining and material-handling equipment, offshore vessels, and aircrafts. Surface wear is an inevitable phenomenon during the service life of transmission systems (such as on gearboxes, bearings, and shafts), and wear propagation can reduce the durability of the contact coating surface. As a result, the performance of the transmission system can degrade significantly, which can cause sudden shutdown of the whole system and lead to unexpected economic loss and accidents. Therefore, to ensure adequate health management of the transmission system, it is necessary to investigate the friction, vibration, and dynamic properties of its contact coating surface and monitor its operating conditions

    Diagnosis of rolling element bearing fault arising in gearbox based on sparse morphological component analysis

    It is hard to diagnose the rolling element bearing fault occurring in gearbox due to the complexity and the probable mutual coupling among the kinds of signals. A novel diagnosis method of rolling element bearing fault arising in gearbox based on morphological component analysis (MCA) originating from sparse representation theory is proposed in the paper. By selecting proper dictionaries, different morphological components can be separated successfully from the complex rolling fault signal arising in gearbox, which helps to improve the efficiency and accuracy of diagnosis result. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulations firstly. Then the proposed method is used in fault feature extracting of complex vibration signals collected from rotating machinery, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is further verified. Besides, the advantage of the proposed method over other relative method is presented

    A Novel Method for Intelligent Single Fault Detection of Bearings Using SAE and Improved D–S Evidence Theory

    In order to realize single fault detection (SFD) from the multi-fault coupling bearing data and further research on the multi-fault situation of bearings, this paper proposes a method based on features self-extraction of a Sparse Auto-Encoder (SAE) and results fusion of improved Dempster–Shafer evidence theory (D–S). Multi-fault signal compression features of bearings were extracted by SAE on multiple vibration sensors’ data. Data sets were constructed by the extracted compression features to train the Support Vector Machine (SVM) according to the rule of single fault detection (R-SFD) this paper proposed. Fault detection results were obtained by the improved D–S evidence theory, which was implemented via correcting the 0 factor in the Basic Probability Assignment (BPA) and modifying the evidence weight by Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC). Extensive evaluations of the proposed method on the experiment platform datasets showed that the proposed method could realize single fault detection from multi-fault bearings. Fault detection accuracy increases as the output feature dimension of SAE increases; when the feature dimension reached 200, the average detection accuracy of the three sensors for bearing inner, outer, and ball faults achieved 87.36%, 87.86% and 84.46%, respectively. The three types’ fault detection accuracy—reached to 99.12%, 99.33% and 98.46% by the improved Dempster–Shafer evidence theory (IDS) to fuse the sensors’ results—is respectively 0.38%, 2.06% and 0.76% higher than the traditional D–S evidence theory. That indicated the effectiveness of improving the D–S evidence theory by evidence weight calculation of PCC
