    Data validation: a case study for a feed-drive monitoring

    The monitoring of machine-tools implicated in the metal cutting process is the subject of increasing developments because of requests on control, reliability, availability of machine-tools and on work-piece quality. The use of computers contributes to a better machine and process monitoring by enabling the implementation of complex algorithms for control, monitoring, … The improvement of monitoring of the main machine-tools devices, the feed-drives and the spindles that drive the cutting process, can be realised by estimating their fault sensitive physical parameters from their continuous-time model. We have chosen to use a continuous-time ARX model. We particularly focus on slow time varying phenomena. This estimation should run while there is no machining process to avoid false detection of faults on the machine due to the cutting process. High speed motions, that occur at least for each tool exchange, are exploited. Some functional constraints require the use of an off-line estimation method, we have chosen an ordinary least squares method. Estimating the physical parameters is insufficient to obtain an efficient monitoring. A measurement analysis and validation are necessary as the validation of the estimated physical parameters. An approach of the measurement and physical parameter estimation validation for a NC machine-tool feed-drive is proposed

    Failure detection and isolation investigation for strapdown skew redundant tetrad laser gyro inertial sensor arrays

    The degree to which flight-critical failures in a strapdown laser gyro tetrad sensor assembly can be isolated in short-haul aircraft after a failure occurrence has been detected by the skewed sensor failure-detection voting logic is investigated along with the degree to which a failure in the tetrad computer can be detected and isolated at the computer level, assuming a dual-redundant computer configuration. The tetrad system was mechanized with two two-axis inertial navigation channels (INCs), each containing two gyro/accelerometer axes, computer, control circuitry, and input/output circuitry. Gyro/accelerometer data is crossfed between the two INCs to enable each computer to independently perform the navigation task. Computer calculations are synchronized between the computers so that calculated quantities are identical and may be compared. Fail-safe performance (identification of the first failure) is accomplished with a probability approaching 100 percent of the time, while fail-operational performance (identification and isolation of the first failure) is achieved 93 to 96 percent of the time

    Condition monitoring of an advanced gas-cooled nuclear reactor core

    A critical component of an advanced gas-cooled reactor station is the graphite core. As a station ages, the graphite bricks that comprise the core can distort and may eventually crack. Since the core cannot be replaced, the core integrity ultimately determines the station life. Monitoring these distortions is usually restricted to the routine outages, which occur every few years, as this is the only time that the reactor core can be accessed by external sensing equipment. This paper presents a monitoring module based on model-based techniques using measurements obtained during the refuelling process. A fault detection and isolation filter based on unknown input observer techniques is developed. The role of this filter is to estimate the friction force produced by the interaction between the wall of the fuel channel and the fuel assembly supporting brushes. This allows an estimate to be made of the shape of the graphite bricks that comprise the core and, therefore, to monitor any distortion on them

This study, which is a continuation of the previous work, implements the developed fault detection and diagnosis scheme for the real time actuation fault diagnosis of the space shuttle main engine. The scheme will be used as an integral part of an intelligent control system demonstration experiment at NASA Lewis.
