Faster Algorithms for the Geometric Transportation Problem
Let R, B be a set of n points in R^d, for constant d, where the points of R have integer supplies, points of B have integer demands, and the sum of supply is equal to the sum of demand. Let d(.,.) be a suitable distance function such as the L_p distance. The transportation problem asks to find a map tau : R x B --> N such that sum_{b in B}tau(r,b) = supply(r), sum_{r in R}tau(r,b) = demand(b), and sum_{r in R, b in B} tau(r,b) d(r,b) is minimized. We present three new results for the transportation problem when d(.,.) is any L_p metric:
* For any constant epsilon > 0, an O(n^{1+epsilon}) expected time randomized algorithm that returns a transportation map with expected cost O(log^2(1/epsilon)) times the optimal cost.
* For any epsilon > 0, a (1+epsilon)-approximation in O(n^{3/2}epsilon^{-d}polylog(U)polylog(n)) time, where U is the maximum supply or demand of any point.
* An exact strongly polynomial O(n^2 polylog n) time algorithm, for d = 2
Route Planning in Transportation Networks
We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation
networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in
milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide
different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and
query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond,
while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on
public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a
significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and
multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive
queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances
requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning
problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses,
trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on
approximate solutions even for metropolitan inputs.Comment: This is an updated version of the technical report MSR-TR-2014-4,

Moving Walkways, Escalators, and Elevators
We study a simple geometric model of transportation facility that consists of
two points between which the travel speed is high. This elementary definition
can model shuttle services, tunnels, bridges, teleportation devices, escalators
or moving walkways. The travel time between a pair of points is defined as a
time distance, in such a way that a customer uses the transportation facility
only if it is helpful.
We give algorithms for finding the optimal location of such a transportation
facility, where optimality is defined with respect to the maximum travel time

On Geometric Alignment in Low Doubling Dimension
In real-world, many problems can be formulated as the alignment between two
geometric patterns. Previously, a great amount of research focus on the
alignment of 2D or 3D patterns, especially in the field of computer vision.
Recently, the alignment of geometric patterns in high dimension finds several
novel applications, and has attracted more and more attentions. However, the
research is still rather limited in terms of algorithms. To the best of our
knowledge, most existing approaches for high dimensional alignment are just
simple extensions of their counterparts for 2D and 3D cases, and often suffer
from the issues such as high complexities. In this paper, we propose an
effective framework to compress the high dimensional geometric patterns and
approximately preserve the alignment quality. As a consequence, existing
alignment approach can be applied to the compressed geometric patterns and thus
the time complexity is significantly reduced. Our idea is inspired by the
observation that high dimensional data often has a low intrinsic dimension. We
adopt the widely used notion "doubling dimension" to measure the extents of our
compression and the resulting approximation. Finally, we test our method on
both random and real datasets, the experimental results reveal that running the
alignment algorithm on compressed patterns can achieve similar qualities,
comparing with the results on the original patterns, but the running times
(including the times cost for compression) are substantially lower
Conditional Hardness of Earth Mover Distance
The Earth Mover Distance (EMD) between two sets of points A, B subseteq R^d with |A| = |B| is the minimum total Euclidean distance of any perfect matching between A and B. One of its generalizations is asymmetric EMD, which is the minimum total Euclidean distance of any matching of size |A| between sets of points A,B subseteq R^d with |A| <= |B|. The problems of computing EMD and asymmetric EMD are well-studied and have many applications in computer science, some of which also ask for the EMD-optimal matching itself. Unfortunately, all known algorithms require at least quadratic time to compute EMD exactly. Approximation algorithms with nearly linear time complexity in n are known (even for finding approximately optimal matchings), but suffer from exponential dependence on the dimension.
In this paper we show that significant improvements in exact and approximate algorithms for EMD would contradict conjectures in fine-grained complexity. In particular, we prove the following results:
- Under the Orthogonal Vectors Conjecture, there is some c>0 such that EMD in Omega(c^{log^* n}) dimensions cannot be computed in truly subquadratic time.
- Under the Hitting Set Conjecture, for every delta>0, no truly subquadratic time algorithm can find a (1 + 1/n^delta)-approximate EMD matching in omega(log n) dimensions.
- Under the Hitting Set Conjecture, for every eta = 1/omega(log n), no truly subquadratic time algorithm can find a (1 + eta)-approximate asymmetric EMD matching in omega(log n) dimensions
