    Route Planning in Transportation Networks

    We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond, while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses, trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on approximate solutions even for metropolitan inputs.Comment: This is an updated version of the technical report MSR-TR-2014-4, previously published by Microsoft Research.     Empowering citizens' cognition and decision making in smart sustainable cities

However, several operational and computing issues need to be taken into account: 1) efficient data description and visualization, 2) forecasting citizens behavior, and 3) supporting decision making with intelligent algorithms.     Applications of Bee Colony Optimization

    Many computationally difficult problems are attacked using non-exact algorithms, such as approximation algorithms and heuristics. This thesis investigates an ex- ample of the latter, Bee Colony Optimization, on both an established optimization problem in the form of the Quadratic Assignment Problem and the FireFighting problem, which has not been studied before as an optimization problem. Bee Colony Optimization is a swarm intelligence algorithm, a paradigm that has increased in popularity in recent years, and many of these algorithms are based on natural pro- cesses. We tested the Bee Colony Optimization algorithm on the QAPLIB library of Quadratic Assignment Problem instances, which have either optimal or best known solutions readily available, and enabled us to compare the quality of solutions found by the algorithm. In addition, we implemented a couple of other well known algorithms for the Quadratic Assignment Problem and consequently we could analyse the runtime of our algorithm. We introduce the Bee Colony Optimization algorithm for the FireFighting problem. We also implement some greedy algorithms and an Ant Colony Optimization al- gorithm for the FireFighting problem, and compare the results obtained on some randomly generated instances. We conclude that Bee Colony Optimization finds good solutions for the Quadratic Assignment Problem, however further investigation on speedup methods is needed to improve its performance to that of other algorithms. In addition, Bee Colony Optimization is effective on small instances of the FireFighting problem, however as instance size increases the results worsen in comparison to the greedy algorithms, and more work is needed to improve the decisions made on these instances

    Trip-Based Public Transit Routing

    We study the problem of computing all Pareto-optimal journeys in a public transit network regarding the two criteria of arrival time and number of transfers taken. We take a novel approach, focusing on trips and transfers between them, allowing fine-grained modeling. Our experiments on the metropolitan network of London show that the algorithm computes full 24-hour profiles in 70 ms after a preprocessing phase of 30 s, allowing fast queries in dynamic scenarios.Comment: Minor corrections, no substantial changes.
