How Does Enterprise Social Software Impact on Employeesâ Innovation Behavior? The Role of Symbolic Capital
Organizations are increasingly adopting new technologies, such as enterprise social software (ESS), which afford employees a repertoire of uses. They not simply focused on work but also on socialization and entertainment. Previous research suggested that the implementation of ESS in an organization had an impact on their employeeâs creative behavior. However, how does it impact on is still not clear. In the present study, the generative mechanism of the impact on their employeeâs innovation behavior is investigated. Based on the practice theory of Bourdieu and theory of critical realism, a large number of interviews within four small medium enterprises was conducted by the grounded theory methodology. The results indicated that the impact on their employeeâs creative behavior was accomplished by four steps, i.e., ESS usage, capitals reproduced, being recognized and practice of creation. A Multiorganisational Study of the Drivers and Barriers of Enterprise Collaboration Systems-Enabled Change
Enterprise Collaboration Systems (ECS) are emerging as the de facto technology platform for the digital workplace. This paper presents findings from an in-depth, multiorganisational study that examines the drivers and barriers of ECS-enabled change from two perspectives: i) the company initiating and driving the project and ii) key practitioners responsible for delivering the change. Data is collected from ECS using companies via a survey and face-to-face workshops, analysed using qualitative content analysis methods to identify categories of change and then synthesised to provide a rich classification and visualisation of the drivers, barriers, motivations and pain points (DBMP) to ECS-enabled change. This is followed by a discussion of the similarities and differences between drivers and barriers from both personal and company perspectives. The paper concludes by exploring the potential of the research and visualisation methods used in this work to provide the foundation for the longitudinal study of ECS-enabled change
Individual Enterprise Social Network Adoption: The Influence of Perceived Network Externalities and Perceived Social Capital Advantage
Empirical evidence indicates that Enterprise Social Networks facilitate intra-organizational knowledge sharing. While organizations continue to invest in Enterprise Social Networks, many implementation projects fail due to insuffi-cient user adoption. Against this background, this paper investigates factors that influence individualsâ adoption of Enterprise Social Networks. We thoroughly reviewed the existing literature and crafted a comprehensive adoption model. Be-sides commonly known adoption factors, we introduce perceived network exter-nalities and perceived social capital advantage to account for the specific context of Enterprise Social Networks. We tested our model using structural equation modeling and empirical survey data of 155 respondents. Our results show that perceived network externalities are by far the strongest predictor for enterprise social network adoption, followed by perceived enjoyment and perceived social capital advantage. In contrast to other studies, we find perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use to be insignificant
Posters versus Lurkers: Improving Participation in Enterprise Social Networks through Promotional Messages
Enterprise social networks (ESNs) often fail if there are few or no contributors of content. Promotional messages are among the common interventions used to improve participation. While most users only read othersâ content (i.e. lurk), contributors who create content (i.e. post) account for only 1% of the users. Research on interventions to improve participation across dissimilar groups is scarce especially in work settings. We develop a model that examines four key motivations of posting and lurking. We employ the elaboration likelihood model to understand how promotional messages influence lurkersâ and postersâ beliefs and participation. We test our model with data collected from 366 members in two corporate Google? communities in a large Australian retail organization. We find that posters and lurkers are motivated and hindered by different factors. Promotional messages do not â always â yield the hoped-for results among lurkers; however, they do make posters more enthusiastic to participate
Methodology for the Implementation of Knowledge Management Systems 2.0
Web 2.0 and Big Data tools can be used to develop knowledge management systems based on facilitating the participation and collaboration of people in order to enhance knowledge. The paper presents a methodology that can help organizations with the use of Web 2.0 and Big Data tools to discover, gather, manage and apply their knowledge by making the process of implementing a knowledge management system faster and simpler. First, an initial version of the methodology was developed and it was then applied to an oil and gas company in order to analyze and refine it. The results obtained show the effectiveness of the methodology, since it helped this company to carry out the implementation quickly and effectively, thereby allowing the company to gain the maximum benefits from existing knowledge

Redes sociais corporativas compreendem interaçÔes imersas em um ambiente de ferramentas de mĂdias sociais. As empresas precisam entender a globalização impulsionada pela tecnologia da informação, sua influĂȘncia na GestĂŁo do Conhecimento e como usar MĂdias Sociais para sobreviver e ganhar vantagem competitiva. O objetivo deste estudo Ă© identificar como a GestĂŁo do Conhecimento e as MĂdias Sociais estĂŁo relacionadas na literatura cientĂfica para encorajar futuras pesquisas. O mĂ©todo de mapeamento de conhecimento cientĂfico denominado Processo Construtivista de Desenvolvimento de Conhecimento (ProKnow-C) apoiou uma anĂĄlise bibliomĂ©trica e sistĂȘmica de literatura. O ProKnow-C Ă© uma opção para selecionar publicaçÔes cientĂficas confiĂĄveis segundo sua relevĂąncia. A anĂĄlise dos dados exibe 42 artigos na base Science Direct entre janeiro de 2005 e fevereiro de 2017. Mostra as principais revistas, descreve conceitos e identifica metodologias utilizadas em artigos sobre GestĂŁo do Conhecimento e MĂdias Sociais. O ProKnow-C viabilizou buscar, organizar e analisar dados bibliogrĂĄficos em conformidade com uma base de dados confiĂĄveis. Companies need to understand globalization driven by information technology, its influence on Knowledge Management, and how to use Social Media to survive and gain competitive advantage. The objective of this study is to identify how Knowledge Management and Social Media are related in the scientific literature, to encourage future research. The method of mapping scientific knowledge called the Constructivist Process of Knowledge Development (ProKnow-C) supported a bibliometric and systemic literature analysis. ProKnow-C is an option to select reliable scientific publications according to their relevance. The data analysis shows 42 articles in the Science Direct database from January 2005 to February 2017. It shows the main journals, describes the main concepts and identifies the methodologies used in publications about Knowledge Management and Social Media. The ProKnow-C enabled search, organize and analyze bibliographic data in accordance with a reliable database. In the analysis of the results, gaps were identified, as well as opportunities for further research. In-depth studies will be useful for the strategic perspective of corporations, in the following directions: influence in the internal and external environments, identification of simple and useful tools, reasons for the withdrawal of use, and the influence of behavioral and psychological aspects on users.Las redes sociales corporativas comprenden interacciones inmersas en un ambiente de herramientas de medios sociales. Cadeia de suprimentos social: modelo para formação de cadeias de suprimentos baseadas em redes virtuais de colaboração
Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro TecnolĂłgico, Programa de PĂłs-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção, 2016.Reconhecendo o aspecto social como principal fator na cadeia de suprimentos, esta tese tem como objetivo propor um modelo para formação de cadeias de suprimento baseadas em redes virtuais de colaboração. Este estudo apresenta uma visĂŁo geral do background teĂłrico que suporta a colaboração entre indivĂduos que participam da cadeia de suprimentos. Foi proposto um modelo que considera a dimensĂŁo colaborativa dos indivĂduos que formam a cadeia de suprimentos, materializando o conceito de social supply chain. Um caso de estudo longitudinal foi utilizado para explorar o conceito na cadeia de suprimentos de uma grande indĂșstria brasileira. A intensificação do uso das tecnologias de informação e comunicação empoderou os indivĂduos e tornou as cadeias de suprimentos mais complexas. O modelo conceitual proposto nesta tese permite utilizar o poder da colaboração das pessoas para otimizar o desempenho das organizaçÔes. Trata-se de um estudo de caso Ășnico, portanto os resultados nĂŁo podem ser generalizados para outras indĂșstrias de transformação. Esta tese pode contribuir com a adaptação de indĂșstrias Ă influĂȘncia dos participantes da cadeia de suprimentos, habilitando a colaboração como forma de engajar e ampliar a geração de negĂłcios. Esta pesquisa reposiciona os indivĂduos participantes da cadeia de suprimentos, indo alĂ©m daqueles que estĂŁo vinculados formalmente Ă s empresas. A proposição de um modelo conceitual pode orientar a aplicação desta proposta em outras indĂșstrias e cadeias de suprimentos.Abstract : Recognising the social aspect as a principal factor in the supply chain this thesis has the objective of proposing a model for the formation of supply chains based on virtual collaboration networks. This study presents a general overview of the theoretical background that supports collaboration between individuals that participate in the supply chain. A model was proposed that considered the collaborative dimension for individuals that form the supply chain, resulting in the concept of the social supply chain. A longitudinal study case was used in order to explore the concept within the supply chain of a large Brazilian industry. Increased use of communication and information technologies has empowered individuals and has resulted in the most complex supply chains. The conceptual model proposed in this study utilises the power of collaboration among people in order to optimise the performance of organisations. As this is a single case study the results cannot be generalised in respect to other processing industries. This thesis may contribute toward the adaptation of industry as to the influence of participants in the supply chain, enabling collaboration in such a manner as to engage and expand on the generation of business. This research repositions individual participants of the supply chain beyond those whom are formally linked to companies. The proposition of a conceptual model may guide the application of this proposal in other industries and supply chains
Essays on enterprise social media: moderation, shop floor integration and information system induced organizational change
The digital transformation increases the pressure on innovation capabilities and challenges organizations to adapt their business models. In order to cope with the increased competitiveness, organizations face two significant internal challenges: Enabling internal digital collaboration and knowledge sharing as well as information system-induced change. This dissertation will investigate seven related research questions divided in two main parts. The first part focuses on how an organization can foster digital knowledge exchanges and collaboration in global organizations. Enterprise social media has attracted the attention of organizations as a technology for social collaboration and knowledge sharing. The dissertation will investigate how organizations can moderate the employee discourse in such platforms from a novel organizational perspective and provide insights on how to increase the encouragement for employees to contribute and assure content quality. The developed framework will provide detailed moderation approaches. In addition, the risk of privacy concerns associated with organizational interference in the new digital collaboration technologies are evaluated. The second part of the dissertation shifts the focus to the shop floor environment, an area that has faced substantial digital advancements. Those advancements change the organizational role of the shop floor to a more knowledge work-oriented environment. Firstly, a state of research regarding technology acceptance and professional diversity is presented to create an enterprise social media job-characteristic framework. Further, a unique and longitudinal shop floor case study is investigated to derive organizational challenges for enterprise social media and potentials for empowerment. To validate the future shop floor environment needs use cases for the shop floor are derived and a user profile is established. The case study is extended by expert interviews to focus on conceptualizing organizational information systems-induced change. In this regard, the role of work practices, organizational and employee mindset and information system change are integrated into a holistic organizational change model that targets employee empowerment. This dissertation provides a comprehensive overview of enterprise social media from an organizational management and shop floor perspective. It contributes to understanding new digital needs at the shop floor and the information systems-induced change journey towards digital employee empowerment
