    Using a coach to improve team performance when the team uses a Kanban process methodology

    Teams are increasing their use of the Kanban process methodology across a range of information system projects, including software development and data science projects. While the use of Kanban is growing, little has been done to explore how to improve team performance for teams that use Kanban. One possibility is to introduce a Kanban Coach (KC). This work reports on exploring the use of a Kanban Coach, with respect to both how the coach could interact with the team as well as how the use of a coach impacts team results. Specifically, this paper reports on an experiment where teams either had, or did not have, a Kanban Coach. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data collected during the experiment found that introducing KC led to significant improvement of team performance. Coordination Theory and Shared Mental Models were then employed to provide an explanation as to why a KC leads to better project results. While this experiment was done within a data science project context, the results are likely applicable across a range of information system projects

    Gestão do desenvolvimento de software com o uso de quadro virtual Kanban/ Software development management with the use of Kanban virtual board

    O método Kanban tem sido utilizado para evidenciar gargalos na produção de software em diversas empresas de desenvolvimento. A proposta inicial do Kanban prevê o uso de um quadro físico para controle e visualização das atividades. Esta proposta sugere que o quadro seja construído de maneira virtual tanto para melhorar o vínculo entre o que é falado e o que é escrito quanto para permitir a extração de métricas de maneira automatizada. Para endossar a proposta, foram analisados dados de aproximadamente dois anos de utilização de quadro virtual Kanban em uma empresa de desenvolvimento de software, com o objetivo de verificar a aderência das informações apresentadas no quadro em relação ao real estágio de desenvolvimento por meio da comparação desses dados com os dados obtidos nos controladores de versionamento de código fonte. Desta forma, foi possível observar algumas divergências entre as marcações o que mostra que há espaço para melhorias

    Factors that contribute significantly to scrum adoption as perceived by scrum practitioners working within South Africa organisations

    Text in EnglishScrum is the most adopted and under-researched Agile methodology. The research conducted on Scrum adoption is mainly qualitative. Therefore, there was a need for a quantitative study to investigate Scrum adoption challenges. The general objective of this study was to investigate the factors that have a significant relationship with Scrum adoption as perceived by Scrum practitioners working within South African organisations. To achieve this objective a narrative review to synthesise the existing challenges was conducted, followed by the use of these challenges in the development of a conceptual framework. After that, a survey questionnaire was used to test and evaluate the developed framework. The research findings indicate that relative advantage, complexity, and sprint management are factors that have a significant linear relationship with Scrum adoption.
