Historiography of new media has gained a remarkable importance in the last decade, especially that devoted to the historical research about the World Wide Web (i.e., Brügger, 2010). Previously, the history of the media was enforced by the perspective of the social and cultural history currents (Burke; Briggs). From these points of views, we attempt in this paper to trace the history of the first decades of online journalism, and to highlight some methodological challenges related to historical research applied to it

Evolve or Dissolve: Will the Extra, Extra Save the Newspaper?

Newspapers have always been the trusted source of information for many years by many. The Internet and other electronic mediums have tested that tendency in recent years. Newspapers have been making changes and evolving to remain a medium of choice in the 21st century. Due to declines in circulation numbers and instabilities in advertising revenue, newspapers have found new ways to continue to be successful. They have encompassed an online presence by the use of online newspapers, fragmented and localized by the use of niche publications and reached the untouched Hispanic and Mexican market by the use of Spanish-language publications. For those newspapers, which have made changes, it has proven to be profitable. The opportunities are tremendous, but not without hard work. Newspapers may not be growing in terms of circulation, but are growing by becoming Newspaper Multi-Mediums. Along with their core product, newspapers offer many components to reach readers through journalistic integrity and advertising

Digital media introduced to the market the quickest form of print content distribution man has ever seen; since its inception the print media industry is under several challenges. The current physical distribution efforts and sales results are not satisfying in the print media industry. Stiff competition exists among the media service providers and players where the print media is under a threat by the digital media as its market share is shrinking at a margin of 27% daily.  The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of the distribution strategies on the performance of service firms in Kenya with particular interest on Print Media Industry. The study adopted a survey design. The target population was 53 respondents selected using Census sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics which involved the use of percentages and frequency tables.  Simple regression analysis was used to assess the degree of association between the variables under investigation and ANOVA for the level of significance between physical distribution strategies and performance of print media in the region. The findings were: customer service strategy and transport logistics strategy were the major physical distribution strategies adopted  and  had a mean weight of 4.5094 in a 5 point loaded scale; this result showed that their use in the industry was of high significance in contributing towards performance of the print media industry; a strong and positive correlation  existed between  physical distribution strategies and performance of the print media industry (R= 0.971a;  and  R2 = 0.943);   the ANOVA results indicated a significant relationship between the predictors (independent variables) and the dependent variable ( F= 271.918; p<0.05); customer service strategy has a positive contribution to the performance of the print media industry; the adopted regression model showed that Performance   = -1.230 – 0.011 TLS + 0.784 CSS + 0.074 RLS; hence increase in use of customer service strategy as physical distribution strategy causes a positive increase in performance of the print media industry in the area under study. The qualitative approach was used in addressing the problem of the paper, through the in-depth interviews tool with (8) executives and technicians of six Jordanian media outlets: Radio of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Rotana Radio, Jordan TV, Amman TV, Al-Rai newspaper, and Al-Ghad newspaper. The article concluded that the most prominent aspects of employing communication digitization in Jordanian media are the preservation of the archive digitally, the creation of a unique application, an earlier manifestation is the creation of a website, and then the opening of accounts on social networks. The results also showed that one of the most essential motivations of digital transformation is reaching ease to the audience with the highest quality, which mobile technology and its applications have enhanced. Accuracy, independence, and impartiality: how legacy media and digital natives approach standards in the digital age

In the digital age, one of the most complex challenges for media outlets is how to re-shape the editorial responsibilities of journalism itself. Which journalistic standards, many devised last century, still fit in this new age? And which standards form the basis of a new type of journalism being pioneered by hybrid news sites that have come of age in the digital era? Kellie Riordan, a one-term journalist fellow from the ABC in Australia, has written a path-breaking and comprehensive paper which tackles these questions head on.  In it she focuses on the three key editorial standards of accuracy, independence, and impartiality,  and examines how these three principles are approached in the digital era. The paper focuses specifically on three legacy organisations (the Guardian, the New York Times, and the BBC) and three digital outlets (Quartz, BuzzFeed, and Vice News). Based on interviews with a wide range of industry experts, scholars and representatives of traditional and new media, Kellie asks two key questions: what can legacy organisations with hundreds of years of history learn from digital natives?  And which traditional journalistic standards held by legacy organisations should be more firmly adopted by newcomers? Amongst Kellie’s many conclusions is her observation that a third form of journalism is emerging; one that combines the best of legacy standards and the new approaches of digital natives. Such a hybrid form, she argues, requires a more streamlined set of editorial standards that fit the internet era
