    Evaluating tag-based information access in image collections

    The availability of social tags has greatly enhanced access to information. Tag clouds have emerged as a new "social" way to find and visualize information, providing both one-click access to information and a snapshot of the "aboutness" of a tagged collection. A range of research projects explored and compared different tag artifacts for information access ranging from regular tag clouds to tag hierarchies. At the same time, there is a lack of user studies that compare the effectiveness of different types of tag-based browsing interfaces from the users point of view. This paper contributes to the research on tag-based information access by presenting a controlled user study that compared three types of tag-based interfaces on two recognized types of search tasks - lookup and exploratory search. Our results demonstrate that tag-based browsing interfaces significantly outperform traditional search interfaces in both performance and user satisfaction. At the same time, the differences between the two types of tag-based browsing interfaces explored in our study are not as clear. Copyright 2012 ACM

    Identifying experts and authoritative documents in social bookmarking systems

    Social bookmarking systems allow people to create pointers to Web resources in a shared, Web-based environment. These services allow users to add free-text labels, or “tags”, to their bookmarks as a way to organize resources for later recall. Ease-of-use, low cognitive barriers, and a lack of controlled vocabulary have allowed social bookmaking systems to grow exponentially over time. However, these same characteristics also raise concerns. Tags lack the formality of traditional classificatory metadata and suffer from the same vocabulary problems as full-text search engines. It is unclear how many valuable resources are untagged or tagged with noisy, irrelevant tags. With few restrictions to entry, annotation spamming adds noise to public social bookmarking systems. Furthermore, many algorithms for discovering semantic relations among tags do not scale to the Web. Recognizing these problems, we develop a novel graph-based Expert and Authoritative Resource Location (EARL) algorithm to find the most authoritative documents and expert users on a given topic in a social bookmarking system. In EARL’s first phase, we reduce noise in a Delicious dataset by isolating a smaller sub-network of “candidate experts”, users whose tagging behavior shows potential domain and classification expertise. In the second phase, a HITS-based graph analysis is performed on the candidate experts’ data to rank the top experts and authoritative documents by topic. To identify topics of interest in Delicious, we develop a distributed method to find subsets of frequently co-occurring tags shared by many candidate experts. We evaluated EARL’s ability to locate authoritative resources and domain experts in Delicious by conducting two independent experiments. The first experiment relies on human judges’ n-point scale ratings of resources suggested by three graph-based algorithms and Google. The second experiment evaluated the proposed approach’s ability to identify classification expertise through human judges’ n-point scale ratings of classification terms versus expert-generated data

    The fact that the existing Web allows people to effortlessly share data over the Internet has resulted in the accumulation of vast amounts of information available on the Web.Therefore, a powerful search technology that will allow retrieval of relevant information is one of the main requirements for the success of the Web which is complicated further due to use of many different formats for storing information. Semantic Web technology plays a major role in resolving this problem by permitting the search engines to retrieve meaningful information. Exploratory search system, a special information seeking and exploration approach, supports users who are unfamiliar with a topic or whose search goals are vague and unfocused to learn and investigate a topic through a set of activities. In order to achieve exploratory search goals Linked Open Data (LOD) can be used to help search systems in retrieving related data, so the investigation task runs smoothly.This paper provides an overview of the Semantic Web Technology, Linked Data and search strategies, followed by a survey of the state of the art Exploratory Search Systems based on LOD.Finally the systems are compared in various aspects such as algorithms, result rankings and explanations

    On Interpretation and Measurement of Soft Attributes for Recommendation

    We address how to robustly interpret natural language refinements (or critiques) in recommender systems. In particular, in human-human recommendation settings people frequently use soft attributes to express preferences about items, including concepts like the originality of a movie plot, the noisiness of a venue, or the complexity of a recipe. While binary tagging is extensively studied in the context of recommender systems, soft attributes often involve subjective and contextual aspects, which cannot be captured reliably in this way, nor be represented as objective binary truth in a knowledge base. This also adds important considerations when measuring soft attribute ranking. We propose a more natural representation as personalized relative statements, rather than as absolute item properties. We present novel data collection techniques and evaluation approaches, and a new public dataset. We also propose a set of scoring approaches, from unsupervised to weakly supervised to fully supervised, as a step towards interpreting and acting upon soft attribute based critiques.publishedVersio

    The Proposed System Analyses the scopes introduced by Web 2.0 and collaborative tagging systems, several challenges have to be addressed too, notably, the problem of information overload. Recommender systems are among the most successful approaches for increasing the level of relevant content over the 201C;noise.201D; Traditional recommender systems fail to address the requirements presented in collaborative tagging systems. This paper considers the problem of item recommendation in collaborative tagging systems. It is proposed to model data from collaborative tagging systems with three-mode tensors, in order to capture the three-way correlations between users, tags, and items. By applying multiway analysis, latent correlations are revealed, which help to improve the quality of recommendations. Moreover, a hybrid scheme is proposed that additionally considers content-based information that is extracted from items. We propose an advanced data mining method using SVD that combines both tag and value similarity, item and user preference. SVD automatically extracts data from query result pages by first identifying and segmenting the query result records in the query result pages and then aligning the segmented query result records into a table, in which the data values from the same attribute are put into the same column. Specifically, we propose new techniques to handle the case when the query result records based on user preferences, which may be due to the presence of auxiliary information, such as a comment, recommendation or advertisement, and for handling any nested-structure that may exist in the query result records
