Research in the field of education and teaching for sustainability in preschool has highlighted the importance of communication for knowledge development in the field of sustainability. This article presents a study of the variations that appear in preschool teachers' perceptions of the importance and the experience of having carried out systematic child talks in preschool. The experience is covered by 60 written comments from preschool teachers after they, within a research and development program (R&D program) in the spring of 2022, conducted systematic child talks in the children's groups where they are working. The data has been analysed based on a phenomenographic theoretical perspective. The result of the analysis shows that in the preschool teachers' perceptions of carrying out systematic talks with children, four varying perceptions emerge: Becoming aware of one's own actions; Exciting and educational to discuss with the children about sustainability; Talking with children was difficult; and, Sharing children's thoughts and experiences was the retention. In the preschool teachers' comments, it appears that some of them, through the systematic child talks, have deepened their reflection and their awareness of talking with the children about aspects of sustainability. At the same time, several difficulties are highlighted regarding the task itself and how to ask questions and maintaining children's interest during the talks. Finally, the study indicates that systematic child talks as a method and working tool are not common in preschool, as several preschool teachers point out that they do not talk to the children in this way in everyday life
1. Hur anvÀnder förskollÀrare bildstöd i verksamheten?
Abstract:
Music in preschool is generally understood as a practice that ought to be governed by normative presuppositions about voices and sounds. The current dissertation questions this normative stance by examining the views of preschool teachers and preschool-teacher educators on musical play. Musical play can be understood as a spontaneous musical exploration and form of communication that an individual conveys through his or her voice and body. Musical play can be surprising, and it can evolve through interaction with others. Noting the emancipatory possibilities inherent in musical play, the current dissertation aims to provide more knowledge about what facilitates and what impedes musical play among preschool teachers and preschool-teacher educators. Data were collected through orchestrated sessions of musical play during meetings with preschool teachers and preschool-teacher educators, respectively, where I as a researcher actively participated. Informed by their experiences from the musical-play sessions, the preschool teachers and preschool-teacher educators discussed their understandings of musical play in subsequent group talks. The discussions were recorded, transcribed, and analysed through a qualitative and reflective thematic analysis. The results indicated that the participants provided contradictory accounts of their own enthusiastic musical play and the difficulties of having musical play in preschool and preschool-teacher education. Preschool teachers and preschool-teacher educators are able to participate in musical play, but they choose to abstain. I conclude that both the preschool teachers and the preschool-teacher educators are hindered from participating in musical play by their reiteration of a repressive argumentation that suggests that only some distinguished individuals are able to create music. Furthermore, the participants suggested that the purpose of music in preschool is to create communal singing and consensus, while they considered musical play as merely frivolous. The results of the current dissertation highlight that it is difficult to engage in musical play in both preschools and preschool-teacher education due to this argumentation and these normative restraints. Inspired by Habermasâ and RanciĂšreâs theoretical oeuvres, the dissertation theorizes about ways of reasoning that may facilitate musical play in preschool and in preschool-teacher education.publishedVersio
The aim of this article is to explore communication between early childhood education teachers and children and itÂŽs implications for childrenÂŽs meaning making during activities in arts and aesthetics in pre-primary settings. Focus is directed towards the communicative approaches of the teachers. The research material consists of video-observations of ten teachers in pre-primary settings. Analysis and interpretation are conducted through a narrative approach. The main findings are expressed in three narratives: 1) The teacher who creates a relationship with the child, 2) The teacher who confirms the initiative of the child, and 3) The teacher who makes meaning making possible. However, the study also reveals that there are considerable variations in the communicative approaches among teachers. This implies unequal premises for childrenÂŽs meaning making. Based upon the studyÂŽs findings, we discuss the importance of an increased awareness among teachers of the importance of communication with respect to childrenÂŽs meaning making. We also argue that there is a need to highlight communicative skills as a vital part of teacher professionalism.Peer reviewe
FörskollÀrares tal om fysik i förskolan
Through the revised curriculum (Swedish National Agency for Education, 2010), science was emphasised, and chemical processes and physical phenomena added as specific content for preschool. However, reviews by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate (2018) show that preschool teachers are still uncertain about the science content and what it should mean in a preschool context. Therefore, it is of interest to study what happens during planning sessions where preschool teachers plan an object of learning in physics. This article presents the qualitatively different ways as the preschool teachers' statements connected to physics and how the teaching of physics changes during four work team planning sessions. The analysis of video transcripts of the planning sessions shows that the preschool teachers' discussions reflect both uncertainty and certainty about the physics content and the physics teaching. The preschool teachers' talk connected to the content change over time from everyday language to the use of scientific concepts. Over time preschool teachers identify new potential starting points for the object of learning. The object of learning is discussed as a construction process and related to time and to what happens during planning sessions and teaching activities. Finally, the implications for practice are put forward
