Use of colour for hand-filled form analysis and recognition
Colour information in form analysis is currently under utilised. As technology has advanced and computing costs have reduced, the processing of forms in colour has now become practicable. This paper describes a novel colour-based approach to the extraction of filled data from colour form images. Images are first quantised to reduce the colour complexity and data is extracted by examining the colour characteristics of the images. The improved performance of the proposed method has been verified by comparing the processing time, recognition rate, extraction precision and recall rate to that of an equivalent black and white system
PDF-Malware Detection: A Survey and Taxonomy of Current Techniques
Portable Document Format, more commonly known as PDF, has become, in the last 20 years, a standard for document exchange and dissemination due its portable nature and widespread adoption. The flexibility and power of this format are not only leveraged by benign users, but from hackers as well who have been working to exploit various types of vulnerabilities, overcome security restrictions, and then transform the PDF format in one among the leading malicious code spread vectors. Analyzing the content of malicious PDF files to extract the main features that characterize the malware identity and behavior, is a fundamental task for modern threat intelligence platforms that need to learn how to automatically identify new attacks. This paper surveys existing state of the art about systems for the detection of malicious PDF files and organizes them in a taxonomy that separately considers the used approaches and the data analyzed to detect the presence of malicious code. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018
Visual Representation of Text in Web Documents and Its Interpretation
This paper examines the uses of text and its representation on Web documents in terms of the challenges in its interpretation. Particular attention is paid to the significant problem of non-uniform representation of text. This non-uniformity is mainly due to the presence of semantically important text in image form as opposed to the standard encoded text. The issues surrounding text representation in Web documents are discussed in the context of colour perception and spatial representation. The characteristics of the representation of text in image form are examined and research towards interpreting these images of text is briefly described

NEXT LEVEL: A COURSE RECOMMENDER SYSTEM BASED ON CAREER INTERESTS
Skills-based hiring is a talent management approach that empowers employers to align recruitment around business results, rather than around credentials and title. It starts with employers identifying the particular skills required for a role, and then screening and evaluating candidatesâ competencies against those requirements. With the recent rise in employers adopting skills-based hiring practices, it has become integral for students to take courses that improve their marketability and support their long-term career success. A 2017 survey of over 32,000 students at 43 randomly selected institutions found that only 34% of students believe they will graduate with the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the job market. Furthermore, the study found that while 96% of chief academic officers believe that their institutions are very or somewhat effective at preparing students for the workforce, only 11% of business leaders strongly agree [11]. An implication of the misalignment is that college graduates lack the skills that companies need and value. Fortunately, the rise of skills-based hiring provides an opportunity for universities and students to establish and follow clearer classroom-to-career pathways. To this end, this paper presents a course recommender system that aims to improve studentsâ career readiness by suggesting relevant skills and courses based on their unique career interests
Handwritten Character Recognition of South Indian Scripts: A Review
Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in
the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large
demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have
performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only
a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian
scripts especially for the South Indian scripts. This paper provides an
overview of offline handwritten character recognition in South Indian Scripts,
namely Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telungu.Comment: Paper presented on the "National Conference on Indian Language
Computing", Kochi, February 19-20, 2011. 6 pages, 5 figure
Detecting Family Resemblance: Automated Genre Classification.
This paper presents results in automated genre classification of digital documents in PDF format. It describes genre classification as an important ingredient in contextualising scientific data and in retrieving targetted material for improving research. The current paper compares the role of visual layout, stylistic features and language model features in clustering documents and presents results in retrieving five selected genres (Scientific Article, Thesis, Periodicals, Business Report, and Form) from a pool of materials populated with documents of the nineteen most popular genres found in our experimental data set.
BlogForever D2.6: Data Extraction Methodology
This report outlines an inquiry into the area of web data extraction, conducted within the context of blog preservation. The report reviews theoretical advances and practical developments for implementing data extraction. The inquiry is extended through an experiment that demonstrates the effectiveness and feasibility of implementing some of the suggested approaches. More specifically, the report discusses an approach based on unsupervised machine learning that employs the RSS feeds and HTML representations of blogs. It outlines the possibilities of extracting semantics available in blogs and demonstrates the benefits of exploiting available standards such as microformats and microdata. The report proceeds to propose a methodology for extracting and processing blog data to further inform the design and development of the BlogForever platform
