Exploring universal patterns in human home-work commuting from mobile phone data
Home-work commuting has always attracted significant research attention
because of its impact on human mobility. One of the key assumptions in this
domain of study is the universal uniformity of commute times. However, a true
comparison of commute patterns has often been hindered by the intrinsic
differences in data collection methods, which make observation from different
countries potentially biased and unreliable. In the present work, we approach
this problem through the use of mobile phone call detail records (CDRs), which
offers a consistent method for investigating mobility patterns in wholly
different parts of the world. We apply our analysis to a broad range of
datasets, at both the country and city scale. Additionally, we compare these
results with those obtained from vehicle GPS traces in Milan. While different
regions have some unique commute time characteristics, we show that the
home-work time distributions and average values within a single region are
indeed largely independent of commute distance or country (Portugal, Ivory
Coast, and Boston)--despite substantial spatial and infrastructural
differences. Furthermore, a comparative analysis demonstrates that such
distance-independence holds true only if we consider multimodal commute
behaviors--as consistent with previous studies. In car-only (Milan GPS traces)
and car-heavy (Saudi Arabia) commute datasets, we see that commute time is
indeed influenced by commute distance
Predicting human mobility through the assimilation of social media traces into mobility models
Predicting human mobility flows at different spatial scales is challenged by
the heterogeneity of individual trajectories and the multi-scale nature of
transportation networks. As vast amounts of digital traces of human behaviour
become available, an opportunity arises to improve mobility models by
integrating into them proxy data on mobility collected by a variety of digital
platforms and location-aware services. Here we propose a hybrid model of human
mobility that integrates a large-scale publicly available dataset from a
popular photo-sharing system with the classical gravity model, under a stacked
regression procedure. We validate the performance and generalizability of our
approach using two ground-truth datasets on air travel and daily commuting in
the United States: using two different cross-validation schemes we show that
the hybrid model affords enhanced mobility prediction at both spatial scales.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
Uncovering the spatial structure of mobility networks
The extraction of a clear and simple footprint of the structure of large,
weighted and directed networks is a general problem that has many applications.
An important example is given by origin-destination matrices which contain the
complete information on commuting flows, but are difficult to analyze and
compare. We propose here a versatile method which extracts a coarse-grained
signature of mobility networks, under the form of a matrix that
separates the flows into four categories. We apply this method to
origin-destination matrices extracted from mobile phone data recorded in
thirty-one Spanish cities. We show that these cities essentially differ by
their proportion of two types of flows: integrated (between residential and
employment hotspots) and random flows, whose importance increases with city
size. Finally the method allows to determine categories of networks, and in the

Modelling public transport accessibility with Monte Carlo stochastic simulations: A case study of Ostrava
Activity-based micro-scale simulation models for transport modelling provide better evaluations of public transport accessibility, enabling researchers to overcome the shortage of reliable real-world data. Current simulation systems face simplifications of personal behaviour, zonal patterns, non-optimisation of public transport trips (choice of the fastest option only), and do not work with real targets and their characteristics. The new TRAMsim system uses a Monte Carlo approach, which evaluates all possible public transport and walking origin-destination (O-D) trips for k-nearest stops within a given time interval, and selects appropriate variants according to the expected scenarios and parameters derived from local surveys. For the city of Ostrava, Czechia, two commuting models were compared based on simulated movements to reach (a) randomly selected large employers and (b) proportionally selected employers using an appropriate distance-decay impedance function derived from various combinations of conditions. The validation of these models confirms the relevance of the proportional gravity-based model. Multidimensional evaluation of the potential accessibility of employers elucidates issues in several localities, including a high number of transfers, high total commuting time, low variety of accessible employers and high pedestrian mode usage. The transport accessibility evaluation based on synthetic trips offers an improved understanding of local situations and helps to assess the impact of planned changes.Web of Science1124art. no. 709
Understanding the Spatial Structure of Urban Commuting Using Mobile Phone Location Data: A Case Study of Shenzhen, China
Understanding commuting patterns has been a classic research topic in the fields of geography, transportation and urban planning, and it is significant for handling the increasingly serious urban traffic congestion and air pollution and their impacts on the quality of life. Traditional studies have used travel survey data to investigate commuting from the aspects of commuting mode, efficiency and influence factors. Due to the limited sample size of these data, it is difficult to examine the large-scale commuting patterns of urban citizens, especially when exploring the spatial structure of commuting. This study attempts to understand the spatial structure characteristics generated by human commutes to work by using massive mobile phone datasets. A three-step workflow was proposed to accomplish this goal, which includes extracting the home and work locations of phone users, detecting the communities from the commuting network, and identifying the commuting convergence and divergence areas for each community. A case study of Shenzhen, China was implemented to determine the commuting structure. We found that there are thirteen communities detected from the commuting network and that some of the communities are in accordance with urban planning; moreover, spatial polycentric polygons exist in each community. These findings can be referenced by urban planners or policy-makers to optimize the spatial layout of the urban functional zones.
