Embedding accessibility and usability: considerations for e-learning research and development projects
This paper makes the case that if e‐learning research and development projects are to be successfully adopted in real‐world teaching and learning contexts, then they must effectively address accessibility and usability issues; and that these need to be integrated throughout the project. As such, accessibility and usability issues need to be made explicit in project documentation, along with allocation of appropriate resources and time. We argue that accessibility and usability are intrinsically inter‐linked. An integrated accessibility and usability evaluation methodology that we have developed is presented and discussed. The paper draws on a series of mini‐case studies from e‐learning projects undertaken over the past 10 years at the Open University
Accessibility and adaptability of learning objects: responding to metadata, learning patterns and profiles of needs and preferences
The case for learning patterns as a design method for accessible and adaptable learning objects is explored. Patterns and templates for the design of learning objects can be derived from successful existing learning resources. These patterns can then be reused in the design of new learning objects. We argue that by attending to criteria for reuse in the definition of these patterns and in the subsequent design of new learning objects, those new resources can be themselves reusable and also adaptable to different learning contexts. Finally, if the patterns identified can be implemented as templates for standard authoring tools, the design of effective, reusable and adaptable resources can be made available to those with limited skills in multimedia authoring and result in learning resources that are more widely accessible
Users' trust in information resources in the Web environment: a status report
This study has three aims; to provide an overview of the ways in which trust is either assessed or asserted in relation to the use and provision of resources in the Web environment for research and learning; to assess what solutions might be worth further investigation and whether establishing ways to assert trust in academic information resources could assist the development of information literacy; to help increase understanding of how perceptions of trust influence the behaviour of information users

Foregrounding accessibility for user experience design
textI am interested in creating generative tools and techniques for designing accessible user experiences for end users. As a user experience designer, I am working on embracing the web accessibility standards and guidelines and including them from the beginning of the User Experience (UX) design process. My projects are directed at facilitating design students and professionals to understand two things: that the broad concept of web accessibility is important, and how they can embed web accessibility into the UX design process at a very early stage. To do this, I used different media (website, posters and videos etc.) to create awareness and educate designers in an interesting, simple and engaging way. In this report, I will discuss the definition and role of accessible design, identify limitations in existing tools and methods, and demonstrate how future designers might research, prototype, analyze, and implement their designs for all users.Desig
Coffee maker patterns and the design of energy feedback artefacts
Smart electricity meters and home displays are being
installed in people’s homes with the assumption that
households will make the necessary efforts to reduce their
electricity consumption. However, present solutions do not
sufficiently account for the social implications of design.
There is a potential for greater savings if we can better
understand how such designs affect behaviour. In this
paper, we describe our design of an energy awareness
artefact – the Energy AWARE Clock – and discuss it in
relation to behavioural processes in the home. A user study
is carried out to study the deployment of the prototype in
real domestic contexts for three months. Results indicate
that the Energy AWARE Clock played a significant role in
drawing households’ attention to their electricity use. It
became a natural part of the household and conceptions of
electricity became naturalized into informants’ everyday
language
