    Energy Aware Runtime Systems for Elastic Stream Processing Platforms

    Following an invariant growth in the required computational performance of processors, the multicore revolution started around 20 years ago. This revolution was mainly an answer to power dissipation constraints restricting the increase of clock frequency in single-core processors. The multicore revolution not only brought in the challenge of parallel programming, i.e. being able to develop software exploiting the entire capabilities of manycore architectures, but also the challenge of programming heterogeneous platforms. The question of “on which processing element to map a specific computational unit?”, is well known in the embedded community. With the introduction of general-purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs), digital signal processors (DSPs) along with many-core processors on different system-on-chip platforms, heterogeneous parallel platforms are nowadays widespread over several domains, from consumer devices to media processing platforms for telecom operators. Finding mapping together with a suitable hardware architecture is a process called design-space exploration. This process is very challenging in heterogeneous many-core architectures, which promise to offer benefits in terms of energy efficiency. The main problem is the exponential explosion of space exploration. With the recent trend of increasing levels of heterogeneity in the chip, selecting the parameters to take into account when mapping software to hardware is still an open research topic in the embedded area. For example, the current Linux scheduler has poor performance when mapping tasks to computing elements available in hardware. The only metric considered is CPU workload, which as was shown in recent work does not match true performance demands from the applications. Doing so may produce an incorrect allocation of resources, resulting in a waste of energy. The origin of this research work comes from the observation that these approaches do not provide full support for the dynamic behavior of stream processing applications, especially if these behaviors are established only at runtime. This research will contribute to the general goal of developing energy-efficient solutions to design streaming applications on heterogeneous and parallel hardware platforms. Streaming applications are nowadays widely spread in the software domain. Their distinctive characiteristic is the retrieving of multiple streams of data and the need to process them in real time. The proposed work will develop new approaches to address the challenging problem of efficient runtime coordination of dynamic applications, focusing on energy and performance management.Efter en oföränderlig tillväxt i prestandakrav hos processorer, började den flerkärniga processor-revolutionen för ungefär 20 år sedan. Denna revolution skedde till största del som en lösning till begränsningar i energieffekten allt eftersom klockfrekvensen kontinuerligt höjdes i en-kärniga processorer. Den flerkärniga processor-revolutionen medförde inte enbart utmaningen gällande parallellprogrammering, m.a.o. förmågan att utveckla mjukvara som använder sig av alla delelement i de flerkärniga processorerna, men också utmaningen med programmering av heterogena plattformar. Frågeställningen ”på vilken processorelement skall en viss beräkning utföras?” är väl känt inom ramen för inbyggda datorsystem. Efter introduktionen av grafikprocessorer för allmänna beräkningar (GPGPU), signalprocesserings-processorer (DSP) samt flerkärniga processorer på olika system-on-chip plattformar, är heterogena parallella plattformar idag omfattande inom många domäner, från konsumtionsartiklar till mediaprocesseringsplattformar för telekommunikationsoperatörer. Processen att placera beräkningarna på en passande hårdvaruplattform kallas för utforskning av en designrymd (design-space exploration). Denna process är mycket utmanande för heterogena flerkärniga arkitekturer, och kan medföra fördelar när det gäller energieffektivitet. Det största problemet är att de olika valmöjligheterna i designrymden kan växa exponentiellt. Enligt den nuvarande trenden som förespår ökad heterogeniska aspekter i processorerna är utmaningen att hitta den mest passande placeringen av beräkningarna på hårdvaran ännu en forskningsfråga inom ramen för inbyggda datorsystem. Till exempel, den nuvarande schemaläggaren i Linux operativsystemet är inkapabel att hitta en effektiv placering av beräkningarna på den underliggande hårdvaran. Det enda mätsättet som används är processorns belastning vilket, som visats i tidigare forskning, inte motsvarar den verkliga prestandan i applikationen. Användning av detta mätsätt vid resursallokering resulterar i slöseri med energi. Denna forskning härstammar från observationerna att dessa tillvägagångssätt inte stöder det dynamiska beteendet hos ström-processeringsapplikationer (stream processing applications), speciellt om beteendena bara etableras vid körtid. Denna forskning kontribuerar till det allmänna målet att utveckla energieffektiva lösningar för ström-applikationer (streaming applications) på heterogena flerkärniga hårdvaruplattformar. Ström-applikationer är numera mycket vanliga i mjukvarudomän. Deras distinkta karaktär är inläsning av flertalet dataströmmar, och behov av att processera dem i realtid.     Translating Timing into an Architecture: The Synergy of COTSon and HLS (Domain Expertise: Designing a Computer Architecture via HLS)

    Translating a system requirement into a low-level representation (e.g., register transfer level or RTL) is the typical goal of the design of FPGA-based systems. However, the Design Space Exploration (DSE) needed to identify the final architecture may be time consuming, even when using high-level synthesis (HLS) tools. In this article, we illustrate our hybrid methodology, which uses a frontend for HLS so that the DSE is performed more rapidly by using a higher level abstraction, but without losing accuracy, thanks to the HP-Labs COTSon simulation infrastructure in combination with our DSE tools (MYDSE tools). In particular, this proposed methodology proved useful to achieve an appropriate design of a whole system in a shorter time than trying to design everything directly in HLS. Our motivating problem was to deploy a novel execution model called data-flow threads (DF-Threads) running on yet-to-be-designed hardware. For that goal, directly using the HLS was too premature in the design cycle. Therefore, a key point of our methodology consists in defining the first prototype in our simulation framework and gradually migrating the design into the Xilinx HLS after validating the key performance metrics of our novel system in the simulator. To explain this workflow, we first use a simple driving example consisting in the modelling of a two-way associative cache. Then, we explain how we generalized this methodology and describe the types of results that we were able to analyze in the AXIOM project, which helped us reduce the development time from months/weeks to days/hours

    Modeling and Mapping of Optimized Schedules for Embedded Signal Processing Systems

    The demand for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in embedded systems has been increasing rapidly due to the proliferation of multimedia- and communication-intensive devices such as pervasive tablets and smart phones. Efficient implementation of embedded DSP systems requires integration of diverse hardware and software components, as well as dynamic workload distribution across heterogeneous computational resources. The former implies increased complexity of application modeling and analysis, but also brings enhanced potential for achieving improved energy consumption, cost or performance. The latter results from the increased use of dynamic behavior in embedded DSP applications. Furthermore, parallel programming is highly relevant in many embedded DSP areas due to the development and use of Multiprocessor System-On-Chip (MPSoC) technology. The need for efficient cooperation among different devices supporting diverse parallel embedded computations motivates high-level modeling that expresses dynamic signal processing behaviors and supports efficient task scheduling and hardware mapping. Starting with dynamic modeling, this thesis develops a systematic design methodology that supports functional simulation and hardware mapping of dynamic reconfiguration based on Parameterized Synchronous Dataflow (PSDF) graphs. By building on the DIF (Dataflow Interchange Format), which is a design language and associated software package for developing and experimenting with dataflow-based design techniques for signal processing systems, we have developed a novel tool for functional simulation of PSDF specifications. This simulation tool allows designers to model applications in PSDF and simulate their functionality, including use of the dynamic parameter reconfiguration capabilities offered by PSDF. With the help of this simulation tool, our design methodology helps to map PSDF specifications into efficient implementations on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Furthermore, valid schedules can be derived from the PSDF models at runtime to adapt hardware configurations based on changing data characteristics or operational requirements. Under certain conditions, efficient quasi-static schedules can be applied to reduce overhead and enhance predictability in the scheduling process. Motivated by the fact that scheduling is critical to performance and to efficient use of dynamic reconfiguration, we have focused on a methodology for schedule design, which complements the emphasis on automated schedule construction in the existing literature on dataflow-based design and implementation. In particular, we have proposed a dataflow-based schedule design framework called the dataflow schedule graph (DSG), which provides a graphical framework for schedule construction based on dataflow semantics, and can also be used as an intermediate representation target for automated schedule generation. Our approach to applying the DSG in this thesis emphasizes schedule construction as a design process rather than an outcome of the synthesis process. Our approach employs dataflow graphs for representing both application models and schedules that are derived from them. By providing a dataflow-integrated framework for unambiguously representing, analyzing, manipulating, and interchanging schedules, the DSG facilitates effective codesign of dataflow-based application models and schedules for execution of these models. As multicore processors are deployed in an increasing variety of embedded image processing systems, effective utilization of resources such as multiprocessor systemon-chip (MPSoC) devices, and effective handling of implementation concerns such as memory management and I/O become critical to developing efficient embedded implementations. However, the diversity and complexity of applications and architectures in embedded image processing systems make the mapping of applications onto MPSoCs difficult. We help to address this challenge through a structured design methodology that is built upon the DSG modeling framework. We refer to this methodology as the DEIPS methodology (DSG-based design and implementation of Embedded Image Processing Systems). The DEIPS methodology provides a unified framework for joint consideration of DSG structures and the application graphs from which they are derived, which allows designers to integrate considerations of parallelization and resource constraints together with the application modeling process. We demonstrate the DEIPS methodology through cases studies on practical embedded image processing systems

    When parallel speedups hit the memory wall

    After Amdahl's trailblazing work, many other authors proposed analytical speedup models but none have considered the limiting effect of the memory wall. These models exploited aspects such as problem-size variation, memory size, communication overhead, and synchronization overhead, but data-access delays are assumed to be constant. Nevertheless, such delays can vary, for example, according to the number of cores used and the ratio between processor and memory frequencies. Given the large number of possible configurations of operating frequency and number of cores that current architectures can offer, suitable speedup models to describe such variations among these configurations are quite desirable for off-line or on-line scheduling decisions. This work proposes new parallel speedup models that account for variations of the average data-access delay to describe the limiting effect of the memory wall on parallel speedups. Analytical results indicate that the proposed modeling can capture the desired behavior while experimental hardware results validate the former. Additionally, we show that when accounting for parameters that reflect the intrinsic characteristics of the applications, such as degree of parallelism and susceptibility to the memory wall, our proposal has significant advantages over machine-learning-based modeling. Moreover, besides being black-box modeling, our experiments show that conventional machine-learning modeling needs about one order of magnitude more measurements to reach the same level of accuracy achieved in our modeling.Comment: 24 page

Advances in technology have enabled to pack an increasing number of cores and bigger caches on the same chip. Nevertheless, contention on shared resources on CMPs -present since the advent of these architectures- still poses a big challenge. Cores in a CMP typically share a last-level cache (LLC) and other memory-related resources with the remaining cores, such as a DRAM controller and an interconnection network.     Thermal-Aware Networked Many-Core Systems

    Advancements in IC processing technology has led to the innovation and growth happening in the consumer electronics sector and the evolution of the IT infrastructure supporting this exponential growth. One of the most difficult obstacles to this growth is the removal of large amount of heatgenerated by the processing and communicating nodes on the system. The scaling down of technology and the increase in power density is posing a direct and consequential effect on the rise in temperature. This has resulted in the increase in cooling budgets, and affects both the life-time reliability and performance of the system. Hence, reducing on-chip temperatures has become a major design concern for modern microprocessors. This dissertation addresses the thermal challenges at different levels for both 2D planer and 3D stacked systems. It proposes a self-timed thermal monitoring strategy based on the liberal use of on-chip thermal sensors. This makes use of noise variation tolerant and leakage current based thermal sensing for monitoring purposes. In order to study thermal management issues from early design stages, accurate thermal modeling and analysis at design time is essential. In this regard, spatial temperature profile of the global Cu nanowire for on-chip interconnects has been analyzed. It presents a 3D thermal model of a multicore system in order to investigate the effects of hotspots and the placement of silicon die layers, on the thermal performance of a modern ip-chip package. For a 3D stacked system, the primary design goal is to maximise the performance within the given power and thermal envelopes. Hence, a thermally efficient routing strategy for 3D NoC-Bus hybrid architectures has been proposed to mitigate on-chip temperatures by herding most of the switching activity to the die which is closer to heat sink. Finally, an exploration of various thermal-aware placement approaches for both the 2D and 3D stacked systems has been presented. Various thermal models have been developed and thermal control metrics have been extracted. An efficient thermal-aware application mapping algorithm for a 2D NoC has been presented.
