Seafloor characterization using airborne hyperspectral co-registration procedures independent from attitude and positioning sensors
The advance of remote-sensing technology and data-storage capabilities has progressed in the last decade to commercial multi-sensor data collection. There is a constant need to characterize, quantify and monitor the coastal areas for habitat research and coastal management. In this paper, we present work on seafloor characterization that uses hyperspectral imagery (HSI). The HSI data allows the operator to extend seafloor characterization from multibeam backscatter towards land and thus creates a seamless ocean-to-land characterization of the littoral zone
Coordinating views for data visualisation and algorithmic profiling
A number of researchers have designed visualisation systems that consist of multiple components, through which data and interaction commands flow. Such multistage (hybrid) models can be used to reduce algorithmic complexity, and to open up intermediate stages of algorithms for inspection and steering. In this paper, we present work on aiding the developer and the user of such algorithms through the application of interactive visualisation techniques. We present a set of tools designed to profile the performance of other visualisation components, and provide further functionality for the exploration of high dimensional data sets. Case studies are provided, illustrating the application of the profiling modules to a number of data sets. Through this work we are exploring ways in which techniques traditionally used to prepare for visualisation runs, and to retrospectively analyse them, can find new uses within the context of a multi-component visualisation system

MyBrush: Brushing and Linking with Personal Agency
We extend the popular brushing and linking technique by incorporating personal agency in the interaction. We map existing research related to brushing and linking into a design space that deconstructs the interaction technique into three components: source (what is being brushed), link (the expression of relationship between source and target), and target (what is revealed as related to the source). Using this design space, we created MyBrush, a unified interface that offers personal agency over brushing and linking by giving people the flexibility to configure the source, link, and target of multiple brushes. The results of three focus groups demonstrate that people with different backgrounds leveraged personal agency in different ways, including performing complex tasks and showing links explicitly. We reflect on these results, paving the way for future research on the role of personal agency in information visualization
VISUEL - A Web Dynamic Dashboard for DataVisualization
Data visualization aims to explore and analyze data quickly, interactively, and intuitively using visual representations. Faced with the constant growth of data in terms of volume and diversity, visualization techniques must confront the challenge of dealing with increasingly large datasets in terms of representation, interaction, and performance. Therefore, these techniques must be able to effectively convey the characteristics of the information space and inspire discovery. In this article, we present VISUEL, a web dynamic dashboard for data visualization. VISUEL supports multiple coordinated views, integrating visualization techniques such as scatter plots, parallel coordinates, and box plots, and interactive schematic maps to represent information enriched with spatial references.VISUEL is fully interactive, supporting traditional interactions like filtering, selection, brushing and linking, and zooming, among others. It also allows the user to configure the visual representation of their data, by selecting the color and shape of the representations. We illustrate the usefulness of this tool using real-life data related to the wine industry in Argentina. Important aspects of our case study are discovered through the construction and analysis of multiple views.Fil: Antonini, Antonella Soledad. Visual Event Cueing in Linked Spatiotemporal Data
abstract: The media disperses a large amount of information daily pertaining to political events social movements, and societal conflicts. Media pertaining to these topics, no matter the format of publication used, are framed a particular way. Framing is used not for just guiding audiences to desired beliefs, but also to fuel societal change or legitimize/delegitimize social movements. For this reason, tools that can help to clarify when changes in social discourse occur and identify their causes are of great use. This thesis presents a visual analytics framework that allows for the exploration and visualization of changes that occur in social climate with respect to space and time. Focusing on the links between data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) and a streaming RSS news data set, users can be cued into interesting events enabling them to form and explore hypothesis. This visual analytics framework also focuses on improving intervention detection, allowing users to hypothesize about correlations between events and happiness levels, and supports collaborative analysis.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Computer Science 201
