    Design and Code Optimization for Systems with Next-generation Racetrack Memories

    With the rise of computationally expensive application domains such as machine learning, genomics, and fluids simulation, the quest for performance and energy-efficient computing has gained unprecedented momentum. The significant increase in computing and memory devices in modern systems has resulted in an unsustainable surge in energy consumption, a substantial portion of which is attributed to the memory system. The scaling of conventional memory technologies and their suitability for the next-generation system is also questionable. This has led to the emergence and rise of nonvolatile memory ( NVM ) technologies. Today, in different development stages, several NVM technologies are competing for their rapid access to the market. Racetrack memory ( RTM ) is one such nonvolatile memory technology that promises SRAM -comparable latency, reduced energy consumption, and unprecedented density compared to other technologies. However, racetrack memory ( RTM ) is sequential in nature, i.e., data in an RTM cell needs to be shifted to an access port before it can be accessed. These shift operations incur performance and energy penalties. An ideal RTM , requiring at most one shift per access, can easily outperform SRAM . However, in the worst-cast shifting scenario, RTM can be an order of magnitude slower than SRAM . This thesis presents an overview of the RTM device physics, its evolution, strengths and challenges, and its application in the memory subsystem. We develop tools that allow the programmability and modeling of RTM -based systems. For shifts minimization, we propose a set of techniques including optimal, near-optimal, and evolutionary algorithms for efficient scalar and instruction placement in RTMs . For array accesses, we explore schedule and layout transformations that eliminate the longer overhead shifts in RTMs . We present an automatic compilation framework that analyzes static control flow programs and transforms the loop traversal order and memory layout to maximize accesses to consecutive RTM locations and minimize shifts. We develop a simulation framework called RTSim that models various RTM parameters and enables accurate architectural level simulation. Finally, to demonstrate the RTM potential in non-Von-Neumann in-memory computing paradigms, we exploit its device attributes to implement logic and arithmetic operations. As a concrete use-case, we implement an entire hyperdimensional computing framework in RTM to accelerate the language recognition problem. Our evaluation shows considerable performance and energy improvements compared to conventional Von-Neumann models and state-of-the-art accelerators

    Timing speculation and adaptive reliable overclocking techniques for aggressive computer systems

    Computers have changed our lives beyond our own imagination in the past several decades. The continued and progressive advancements in VLSI technology and numerous micro-architectural innovations have played a key role in the design of spectacular low-cost high performance computing systems that have become omnipresent in today\u27s technology driven world. Performance and dependability have become key concerns as these ubiquitous computing machines continue to drive our everyday life. Every application has unique demands, as they run in diverse operating environments. Dependable, aggressive and adaptive systems improve efficiency in terms of speed, reliability and energy consumption. Traditional computing systems run at a fixed clock frequency, which is determined by taking into account the worst-case timing paths, operating conditions, and process variations. Timing speculation based reliable overclocking advocates going beyond worst-case limits to achieve best performance while not avoiding, but detecting and correcting a modest number of timing errors. The success of this design methodology relies on the fact that timing critical paths are rarely exercised in a design, and typical execution happens much faster than the timing requirements dictated by worst-case design methodology. Better-than-worst-case design methodology is advocated by several recent research pursuits, which exploit dependability techniques to enhance computer system performance. In this dissertation, we address different aspects of timing speculation based adaptive reliable overclocking schemes, and evaluate their role in the design of low-cost, high performance, energy efficient and dependable systems. We visualize various control knobs in the design that can be favorably controlled to ensure different design targets. As part of this research, we extend the SPRIT3E, or Superscalar PeRformance Improvement Through Tolerating Timing Errors, framework, and characterize the extent of application dependent performance acceleration achievable in superscalar processors by scrutinizing the various parameters that impact the operation beyond worst-case limits. We study the limitations imposed by short-path constraints on our technique, and present ways to exploit them to maximize performance gains. We analyze the sensitivity of our technique\u27s adaptiveness by exploring the necessary hardware requirements for dynamic overclocking schemes. Experimental analysis based on SPEC2000 benchmarks running on a SimpleScalar Alpha processor simulator, augmented with error rate data obtained from hardware simulations of a superscalar processor, are presented. Even though reliable overclocking guarantees functional correctness, it leads to higher power consumption. As a consequence, reliable overclocking without considering on-chip temperatures will bring down the lifetime reliability of the chip. In this thesis, we analyze how reliable overclocking impacts the on-chip temperature of a microprocessor and evaluate the effects of overheating, due to such reliable dynamic frequency tuning mechanisms, on the lifetime reliability of these systems. We then evaluate the effect of performing thermal throttling, a technique that clamps the on-chip temperature below a predefined value, on system performance and reliability. Our study shows that a reliably overclocked system with dynamic thermal management achieves 25% performance improvement, while lasting for 14 years when being operated within 353K. Over the past five decades, technology scaling, as predicted by Moore\u27s law, has been the bedrock of semiconductor technology evolution. The continued downscaling of CMOS technology to deep sub-micron gate lengths has been the primary reason for its dominance in today\u27s omnipresent silicon microchips. Even as the transition to the next technology node is indispensable, the initial cost and time associated in doing so presents a non-level playing field for the competitors in the semiconductor business. As part of this thesis, we evaluate the capability of speculative reliable overclocking mechanisms to maximize performance at a given technology level. We evaluate its competitiveness when compared to technology scaling, in terms of performance, power consumption, energy and energy delay product. We present a comprehensive comparison for integer and floating point SPEC2000 benchmarks running on a simulated Alpha processor at three different technology nodes in normal and enhanced modes. Our results suggest that adopting reliable overclocking strategies will help skip a technology node altogether, or be competitive in the market, while porting to the next technology node. Reliability has become a serious concern as systems embrace nanometer technologies. In this dissertation, we propose a novel fault tolerant aggressive system that combines soft error protection and timing error tolerance. We replicate both the pipeline registers and the pipeline stage combinational logic. The replicated logic receives its inputs from the primary pipeline registers while writing its output to the replicated pipeline registers. The organization of redundancy in the proposed Conjoined Pipeline system supports overclocking, provides concurrent error detection and recovery capability for soft errors, intermittent faults and timing errors, and flags permanent silicon defects. The fast recovery process requires no checkpointing and takes three cycles. Back annotated post-layout gate-level timing simulations, using 45nm technology, of a conjoined two-stage arithmetic pipeline and a conjoined five-stage DLX pipeline processor, with forwarding logic, show that our approach, even under a severe fault injection campaign, achieves near 100% fault coverage and an average performance improvement of about 20%, when dynamically overclocked

    Computational Sprinting: Exceeding Sustainable Power in Thermally Constrained Systems

    Although process technology trends predict that transistor sizes will continue to shrink for a few more generations, voltage scaling has stalled and thus future chips are projected to be increasingly more power hungry than previous generations. Particularly in mobile devices which are severely cooling constrained, it is estimated that the peak operation of a future chip could generate heat ten times faster than than the device can sustainably vent. However, many mobile applications do not demand sustained performance; rather they comprise short bursts of computation in response to sporadic user activity. To improve responsiveness for such applications, this dissertation proposes computational sprinting, in which a system greatly exceeds sustainable power margins (by up to 10Ã?) to provide up to a few seconds of high-performance computation when a user interacts with the device. Computational sprinting exploits the material property of thermal capacitance to temporarily store the excess heat generated when sprinting. After sprinting, the chip returns to sustainable power levels and dissipates the stored heat when the system is idle. This dissertation: (i) broadly analyzes thermal, electrical, hardware, and software considerations to analyze the feasibility of engineering a system which can provide the responsiveness of a plat- form with 10Ã? higher sustainable power within today\u27s cooling constraints, (ii) leverages existing sources of thermal capacitance to demonstrate sprinting on a real system today, and (iii) identifies the energy-performance characteristics of sprinting operation to determine runtime sprint pacing policies

    After a brief review of machine learning techniques and applications, this Ph.D. thesis examines several approaches for implementing machine learning architectures and algorithms into hardware within our laboratory. From this interdisciplinary background support, we have motivations for novel approaches that we intend to follow as an objective of innovative hardware implementations of dynamically self-reconfigurable logic for enhanced self-adaptive, self-(re)organizing and eventually self-assembling machine learning systems, while developing this new particular area of research. And after reviewing some relevant background of robotic control methods followed by most recent advanced cognitive controllers, this Ph.D. thesis suggests that amongst many well-known ways of designing operational technologies, the design methodologies of those leading-edge high-tech devices such as cognitive chips that may well lead to intelligent machines exhibiting conscious phenomena should crucially be restricted to extremely well defined constraints. Roboticists also need those as specifications to help decide upfront on otherwise infinitely free hardware/software design details. In addition and most importantly, we propose these specifications as methodological guidelines tightly related to ethics and the nowadays well-identified workings of the human body and of its psyche

    Video Processing Acceleration using Reconfigurable Logic and Graphics Processors

    A vexing question is `which architecture will prevail as the core feature of the next state of the art video processing system?' This thesis examines the substitutive and collaborative use of the two alternatives of the reconfigurable logic and graphics processor architectures. A structured approach to executing architecture comparison is presented - this includes a proposed `Three Axes of Algorithm Characterisation' scheme and a formulation of perfor- mance drivers. The approach is an appealing platform for clearly defining the problem, assumptions and results of a comparison. In this work it is used to resolve the advanta- geous factors of the graphics processor and reconfigurable logic for video processing, and the conditions determining which one is superior. The comparison results prompt the exploration of the customisable options for the graphics processor architecture. To clearly define the architectural design space, the graphics processor is first identifed as part of a wider scope of homogeneous multi-processing element (HoMPE) architectures. A novel exploration tool is described which is suited to the investigation of the customisable op- tions of HoMPE architectures. The tool adopts a systematic exploration approach and a high-level parameterisable system model, and is used to explore pre- and post-fabrication customisable options for the graphics processor. A positive result of the exploration is the proposal of a reconfigurable engine for data access (REDA) to optimise graphics processor performance for video processing-specific memory access patterns. REDA demonstrates the viability of the use of reconfigurable logic as collaborative `glue logic' in the graphics processor architecture

    Power-constrained aware and latency-aware microarchitectural optimizations in many-core processors

    As the transistor budgets outpace the power envelope (the power-wall issue), new architectural and microarchitectural techniques are needed to improve, or at least maintain, the power efficiency of next-generation processors. Run-time adaptation, including core, cache and DVFS adaptations, has recently emerged as a promising area to keep the pace for acceptable power efficiency. However, none of the adaptation techniques proposed so far is able to provide good results when we consider the stringent power budgets that will be common in the next decades, so new techniques that attack the problem from several fronts using different specialized mechanisms are necessary. The combination of different power management mechanisms, however, bring extra levels of complexity, since other factors such as workload behavior and run-time conditions must also be considered to properly allocate power among cores and threads. To address the power issue, this thesis first proposes Chrysso, an integrated and scalable model-driven power management that quickly selects the best combination of adaptation methods out of different core and uncore micro-architecture adaptations, per-core DVFS, or any combination thereof. Chrysso can quickly search the adaptation space by making performance/power projections to identify Pareto-optimal configurations, effectively pruning the search space. Chrysso achieves 1.9x better chip performance over core-level gating for multi-programmed workloads, and 1.5x higher performance for multi-threaded workloads. Most existing power management schemes use a centralized approach to regulate power dissipation. Unfortunately, the complexity and overhead of centralized power management increases significantly with core count rendering it in-viable at fine-grain time slices. The work leverages a two-tier hierarchical power manager. This solution is highly scalable with low overhead on a tiled many-core architecture with shared LLC and per-tile DVFS at fine-grain time slices. The global power is first distributed across tiles using GPM and then within a tile (in parallel across all tiles). Additionally, this work also proposes DVFS and cache-aware thread migration (DCTM) to ensure optimum per-tile co-scheduling of compatible threads at runtime over the two-tier hierarchical power manager. DCTM outperforms existing solutions by up to 12% on adaptive many-core tile processor. With the advancements in the core micro-architectural techniques and technology scaling, the performance gap between the computational component and memory component is increasing significantly (the memory-wall issue). To bridge this gap, the architecture community is pushing forward towards multi-core architecture with on-die near-memory DRAM cache memory (faster than conventional DRAM). Gigascale DRAM Caches poses a problem of how to efficiently manage the tags. The Tags-in-DRAM designs aims at efficiently co-locate tags with data, but it still suffer from high latency especially in multi-way associativity. The thesis finally proposes Tag Cache mechanism, an on-chip distributed tag caching mechanism with limited space and latency overhead to bypass the tag read operation in multi-way DRAM Caches, thereby reducing hit latency. Each Tag Cache, stored in L2, stores tag information of the most recently used DRAM Cache ways. The Tag Cache is able to exploit temporal locality of the DRAM Cache, thereby contributing to on average 46% of the DRAM Cache hits.A mesura que el consum dels transistors supera el nivell de potència desitjable es necessiten noves tècniques arquitectòniques i microarquitectòniques per millorar, o almenys mantenir, l'eficiència energètica dels processadors de les pròximes generacions. L'adaptació en temps d'execució, tant de nuclis com de les cachés, així com també adaptacions DVFS són idees que han sorgit recentment que fan preveure que sigui un àrea prometedora per mantenir un ritme d'eficiència energètica acceptable. Tanmateix, cap de les tècniques d'adaptació proposades fins ara és capaç d'oferir bons resultats si tenim en compte les restriccions estrictes de potència que seran comuns a les pròximes dècades. És convenient definir noves tècniques que ataquin el problema des de diversos fronts utilitzant diferents mecanismes especialitzats. La combinació de diferents mecanismes de gestió d'energia porta aparellada nivells addicionals de complexitat, ja que altres factors com ara el comportament de la càrrega de treball així com condicions específiques de temps d'execució també han de ser considerats per assignar adequadament la potència entre els nuclis del sistema computador. Per tractar el tema de la potència, aquesta tesi proposa en primer lloc Chrysso, una administració d'energia integrada i escalable que selecciona ràpidament la millor combinació entre diferents adaptacions microarquitectòniques. Chrysso pot buscar ràpidament l'adaptació adequada al fer projeccions òptimes de rendiment i potència basades en configuracions de Pareto, permetent així reduir de manera efectiva l'espai de cerca. Chrysso arriba a un rendiment de 1,9 sobre tècniques convencionals d'inhibició de portes amb una càrrega d'aplicacions seqüencials; i un rendiment de 1,5 quan les aplicacions corresponen a programes parla·lels. La majoria dels sistemes de gestió d'energia existents utilitzen un enfocament centralitzat per regular la dissipació d'energia. Malauradament, la complexitat i el temps d'administració s'incrementen significativament amb una gran quantitat de nuclis. En aquest treball es defineix un gestor jeràrquic de potència basat en dos nivells. Aquesta solució és altament escalable amb baix cost operatiu en una arquitectura de múltiples nuclis integrats en clústers, amb memòria caché de darrer nivell compartida a nivell de cluster, i DVFS establert en intervals de temps de gra fi a nivell de clúster. La potència global es distribueix en primer lloc a través dels clústers utilitzant GPM i després es distribueix dins un clúster (en paral·lel si es consideren tots els clústers). A més, aquest treball també proposa DVFS i migració de fils conscient de la memòria caché (DCTM) que garanteix una òptima distribució de tasques entre els nuclis. DCTM supera les solucions existents fins a un 12%. Amb els avenços en la tecnologia i les tècniques de micro-arquitectura de nuclis, la diferència de rendiment entre el component computacional i la memòria està augmentant significativament. Per omplir aquest buit, s'està avançant cap a arquitectures de múltiples nuclis amb memòries caché integrades basades en DRAM. Aquestes memòries caché DRAM a gran escala plantegen el problema de com gestionar de forma eficaç les etiquetes. Els dissenys de cachés amb dades i etiquetes juntes són un primer pas, però encara pateixen per tenir una alta latència, especialment en cachés amb un grau alt d'associativitat. En aquesta tesi es proposa l'estudi d'una tècnica anomenada Tag Cache, un mecanisme distribuït d'emmagatzematge d'etiquetes, que redueix la latència de les operacions de lectura d'etiquetes en les memòries caché DRAM. Cada Tag Cache, que resideix a L2, emmagatzema la informació de les vies que s'han accedit recentment de les memòries caché DRAM. D'aquesta manera es pot aprofitar la localitat temporal d'una caché DRAM, fet que contribueix en promig en un 46% dels encerts en les caché DRAM

    Towards Real-Time, On-Board, Hardware-Supported Sensor and Software Health Management for Unmanned Aerial Systems

    For unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to be successfully deployed and integrated within the national airspace, it is imperative that they possess the capability to effectively complete their missions without compromising the safety of other aircraft, as well as persons and property on the ground. This necessity creates a natural requirement for UAS that can respond to uncertain environmental conditions and emergent failures in real-time, with robustness and resilience close enough to those of manned systems. We introduce a system that meets this requirement with the design of a real-time onboard system health management (SHM) capability to continuously monitor sensors, software, and hardware components. This system can detect and diagnose failures and violations of safety or performance rules during the flight of a UAS. Our approach to SHM is three-pronged, providing: (1) real-time monitoring of sensor and software signals; (2) signal analysis, preprocessing, and advanced on-the-fly temporal and Bayesian probabilistic fault diagnosis; and (3) an unobtrusive, lightweight, read-only, low-power realization using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) that avoids overburdening limited computing resources or costly re-certification of flight software. We call this approach rt-R2U2, a name derived from its requirements. Our implementation provides a novel approach of combining modular building blocks, integrating responsive runtime monitoring of temporal logic system safety requirements with model-based diagnosis and Bayesian network-based probabilistic analysis.
