    Policy Design for Controlling Set-Point Temperature of ACs in Shared Spaces of Buildings

    Air conditioning systems are responsible for the major percentage of energy consumption in buildings. Shared spaces constitute considerable office space area, in which most office employees perform their meetings and daily tasks, and therefore the ACs in these areas have significant impact on the energy usage of the entire office building. The cost of this energy consumption, however, is not paid by the shared space users, and the AC's temperature set-point is not determined based on the users' preferences. This latter factor is compounded by the fact that different people may have different choices of temperature set-points and sensitivities to change of temperature. Therefore, it is a challenging task to design an office policy to decide on a particular set-point based on such a diverse preference set. As a result, users are not aware of the energy consumption in shared spaces, which may potentially increase the energy wastage and related cost of office buildings. In this context, this paper proposes an energy policy for an office shared space by exploiting an established temperature control mechanism. In particular, we choose meeting rooms in an office building as the test case and design a policy according to which each user of the room can give a preference on the temperature set-point and is paid for felt discomfort if the set-point is not fixed according to the given preference. On the other hand, users who enjoy the thermal comfort compensate the other users of the room. Thus, the policy enables the users to be cognizant and responsible for the payment on the energy consumption of the office space they are sharing, and at the same time ensures that the users are satisfied either via thermal comfort or through incentives. The policy is also shown to be beneficial for building management.     Subzone control method of stratum ventilation for thermal comfort improvement

    The conventional control method of a collective ventilation (e.g., stratum ventilation) controls the averaged thermal environment in the occupied zone to satisfy the averaged thermal preference of a group of occupants. However, the averaged thermal environment in the occupied zone is not the same as the microclimates of the occupants, because the thermal environment in the occupied zone is not absolutely uniform. Moreover, the averaged thermal preference of the occupants could deviate from the individual thermal preferences, because the occupants could have different individual thermal preferences. This study proposes a subzone control method for stratum ventilation to improve thermal comfort. The proposed method divides the occupied zone into subzones, and controls the microclimates of the subzones to satisfy the thermal preferences of the respective subzones. Experiments in a stratum-ventilated classroom are conducted to model and validate the Predicted Mean Votes (PMVs) of the subzones, with a mean absolute error between 0.05 scale and 0.14 scale. Using the PMV models, the supply air parameters are optimized to minimize the deviation between the PMVs of the subzones and the respective thermal preferences. Case studies show that the proposed method can fulfill the thermal constraints of all subzones for thermal comfort, while the conventional method fails. The proposed method further improves thermal comfort by reducing the deviation of the achieved PMVs of subzones from the preferred ones by 17.6%–41.5% as compared with the conventional method. The proposed method is also promising for other collective ventilations (e.g., mixing ventilation and displacement ventilation)

    Oral application of L-menthol in the heat: From pleasure to performance

    When menthol is applied to the oral cavity it presents with a familiar refreshing sensation and cooling mint flavour. This may be deemed hedonic in some individuals, but may cause irritation in others. This variation in response is likely dependent upon trigeminal sensitivity toward cold stimuli, suggesting a need for a menthol solution that can be easily personalised. Menthol’s characteristics can also be enhanced by matching colour to qualitative outcomes; a factor which can easily be manipulated by practitioners working in athletic or occupational settings to potentially enhance intervention efficacy. This presentation will outline the efficacy of oral menthol application for improving time trial performance to date, either via swilling or via co-ingestion with other cooling strategies, with an emphasis upon how menthol can be applied in ecologically valid scenarios. Situations in which performance is not expected to be enhanced will also be discussed. An updated model by which menthol may prove hedonic, satiate thirst and affect ventilation will also be presented, with the potential performance implications of these findings discussed and modelled. Qualitative reflections from athletes that have implemented menthol mouth swilling in competition, training and maximal exercise will also be included

    Study on the ability of black soldier fly larvae for reducing the house fly eggs in poultry manure

    Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are a good source of protein for aquaculture, animal feed, pet and human nutrition. Larvae have a healthy appetite and can be used to make household waste compost and residual agricultural. For previous study [1], observed that the BSFL can be grown in a variety of organic waste stream including pig manure, kitchen waste, fruits and vegetables, and given to the fish. In addition, the larvae benefit from the use of natural resources to overcome the problem of life cycle of widespread flies in the poultry farm openly. Therefore, it is important to note that the poultry farms release many particles into the air that endanger human health and the environment

    Modelling conjugate flow and heat transfer in a ventilated room for indoor thermal comfort assessment

    Conjugate natural and forced convection heat transfers in a domestic model room of finite-thickness walls and a heat source have been numerically studied. A 2-D non-ventilated square model room with a heat source is investigated at first for conditions of Prandtl number Pr=0.7 and Grashof number Gr=107. Computational results are compared with already validated numerical predictions and good agreement has been achieved in terms of stream function and temperature distributions. The study continues to consider 3-D ventilated rectangular model room with a finite-thickness wall and a heat source, in order to evaluate flow and heat transfer characteristics. Key physical features such as temperature distributions in both solid wall and indoor air domains, and heat transfer performance have been quantified, analysed and compared. These results provide the correlations among room heating device arrangement, wall thickness effect, indoor thermal comfort level and energy consumption. It was found that the arrangements of heat source and window glazing had significant impact on the temperature field, and further analysis of wall thickness and thermal conductivity variations revealed the level of the comfort temperature within the occupied zone. It was also found that for an average U-value of 0.22 W/m2K, thermal energy loss through a thinner wall of 20 cm thickness is 53% higher and indoor thermal temperature is 4.6 °C lower, compared with those of a thicker wall of 40 cm thickness.
